Here I go! My first blog ever and chuffed that I've got this far! Four more sleeps till we jet out of OR Tambo and head for Morocco. Woop woop ... the excitement is building. The stacking and more stacking and still more stacking ... and then a little packing ... has begun. Those two little words, "travel light" roll off the tongue so easily, but when push comes to shove, eeeeeek, "what to pack??????". I may be dubious about the clothing to pack but some things I am in no doubt about. My "stash" .... especially for the exciting moment on take-off, feeling the thrust of the jet engines under my butt, for that pensive moment when I spot the hunk sitting in the isle opposite me and especially for the moment that I realize ... read more

Firstly, a song................ I hear the drums echoing tonight But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation She's coming in twelve-thirty flight Her moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation I stopped an old man along the way Hoping to find some old forgotten words or ancient melodies He turned to me as if to say: "Hurry boy, it's waiting there for you" It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do I bless the rains down in Africa Gonna take some time to do the things we never had Toto (1982) Departing 23 September 2014 on Qantas via Sydney to Johannesburg Exciting times!... read more

19 July: Johannesburg day tour Our day started early with a breakfast of yogurt and fruit with our tour guide picking us up at 7AM to take us around Johannesburg area. Our first stop on the tour was to Soweto. We started off in the nice area of Sweto where the houses looked liked they could have been anywhere in the world. He then showed us the dorms where the workers used to live but now it is just occupants waiting for the government houses to be built (a Mandela project). Continuing our drive, we went by a new university built in the area so that kids can see it everyday and hopefully encourage them to go. Also, it was built so that children could go to university without having to go to the main city. ... read more

Geo: -26.1355, 28.2315Unremarkable airport with plenty of non-smiling staff. Named after a deceased anti-apartheid politician. Luckily the plane was not full and we each got to spread out over three seats for the 10 hour flight. The ear phones were so small that wearing them while sleeping with our head on the side was no problem. We have a four-hour wait for our Nelspruit flight so have had a bit of a wander around. Great variety, good and cheap food in the food hall. If this is like other airports where there is a significant premium on the cost of food, then SA eating will be very cheap. Wonder what their other prices are like?A beautiful, clear and sunny day but it was 1deg when we landed and it hasn't warmed up much yet! The waiting lounge ... read more

Geo: -26.1538, 28.0389July 1Did our final pack and got to the airport and said our goodbyes to Rob. They didn't charge us for the second bag we checked. Ate one last breakfast at the Mugg and Bean and then out to the boarding area. Call for our flight and we took the bus out to the plane but OOOPS!, they had taken us to the wrong plane. Found the correct plane, very nice and had a pleasant flight to Llongwe.Landed in Llongwe without a hitch and had the usual backlog clearing customs and immigration. Each person is photographed, their finger and thumb prints scanned and then you are free to go. But, of course this takes time. They came and pulled us out of the line to go to the head of a new line. Once ... read more

We spent Sunday afternoon visiting Soweto, Mandela's house, a great museum, the venue for the 2010 World Cup Final and trying out the local beer. After the student uprising there were many deaths in Soweto. A grizzly time for SA. There is a museum to a young boy who was killed that day, Hector Pieterson. Quite graphic accounts. ... read more

A new adventure awaits in the African continent. Only 3yrs after our last visit we are off for some more safari, a little glamping and a Wedding in Victoria Falls. So in 4 days time we get on BA's biggest bird for a wee hop to Jo'burg to meet up with Laurence and Alida. Let's hope Kruger lives up to it's great animal spotting of 2011. Lots of tales to be told in summer 2014.... read more
