This trip to South Africa happened on a whim. I had 8 days off coming up and knew I did not want to spend them in Kuwait where I work. I started looking at different places to visit, Nepal. India, Mauritius, Malta, just places I have heard about and thought might be interesting. One morning while I was eating breakfast downtown and searching I over heard a few ladies from the UK talking and one said that she was getting ready for a holiday in South Africa, and the others said that they had been there several times. I couldn’t understand why someone would go back to the same place so many times. This got me to thinking. I had always wanted to go to Africa, hunting but could never justify the cost; I started researching ... read more

This is my last day in Africa and my last day in Johannesburg – and it’s a very special one. The early part of my adventure was all part of the Give Movement Journey 2015 – the activities of the past few days are a result of my master networking skills and abilities, and I mean that in all sincerety. Most of my colleagues continued on to various safari trips after the Give Movement 2015 project. Prior to coming to Africa, I asked my colleague Sandy Salle (http://www.hillsofafrica.com) to connect me with some of her contacts in Zimbabwe (this is her native home and she is a very generous soul!). She made the initial introductions and I took it from there – resulting in the start of new relationship with Hema Vallabh, http://www.thepassionateprofessional.org Before Ch... read more

And another beautiful, sunny morning in Johannesburg – hello, everyone! Today is a special day and one that is so near and dear to my heart. It is International Women’s Day and I am participating in the Global Mentoring Walk. What an honor. What a thrill – and, again, another activity so in alignment with my WHY! Let me share the story of how this came about – because I want my clients and other entrepreneurs to understand the power of relationships, networking and asking for what you want – skills I have mastered and which I use for the greater good. When I was invited to join Suzanne Evans and Sandy Salle on the Give Movement Journey 2015, I was more than happy to return for the 2nd time. I know that one of the ... read more

And here I am - after 2 very long days of travel - intersting times on the road, though. It is 27 degrees Celsius - quite a change from -25 at home when I left. It is delightful to be met by my guide, Natasha (all arranged by http://www.HillsofAfrica.com and my buddy, Sandy Salle!) - when one is at the level of fatigue that I was getting off that plane, it was nice to be told where to go and what to do, LOL. The hotel I am staying at is right at the airport so it was just a short walk away and off we go. http://www.thecitylodgehotel.com The room is really quite nice - very comfortable and it was only moments before I hit the bed. I only intended to sleep for 2-3 hours but ... read more

We saw so much today, I’m finding it hard to process. Our morning started with a drive through some of the affluent districts near our hotel. The main impression is that everyone lives behind decorative but solid walls, topped by various styles of deterrent, including razor wire. We did stop at Nelson Mandela’s house in Houghton Estates, bought in 1990 by the ANCfor him – a large, beautiful house with lots of windows. An endearing tribute to him came from the stones around the trees outside the walls – they were all painted with messages, placed there when he was ill and after his death (2013). A short drive away, on the top of a hill, was the Constitutional Court. A deeply moving site. It took quite some time for me absorb conflicting feelings. After considerable ... read more

I am back at the pool, but no little girls to play with. Writing these notes instead. Not sure if the temperature reached 30°, because the pool felt colder today. Although during our visit to Gold Reef City, the heat was sweltering. Our departure this morning at 9:00 took us south, through much more affluent neighbourhoods. We glimpsed the mansions of Cecil Rhodes and other original gold and diamond magnates, now designated as heritage buildings. The government has just started to restore the first one. (In Pretoria more progress has been made, we are told.) We passed Turffontein, which was a White district during apartheid. The houses would fit into any mid-century neighbourhood in Calgary, except they were finished in what looks like sand coloured stucco. We passed closer to the old Johannesburg downtown and glimpsed ... read more

With a few interruptions, I slept until 8:20 this morning! Even so, I managed to be almost late for the tour. From my one-day experience today, I think South Africa may run five-minutes early. Breakfast was a buffet at the hotel: a plentiful spread in a large, full dining room pulsating with business. Our guide, Thabelo, was welcoming and cheerful. These four days in Johannesburg are an extension to the main tour, delivered by a local tour company. Three of us are taking the extension. Norm was quiet, but Jack and I kept asking questions and making observations after Thabelo had finished his short history of Johannesburg. I learned that Johannesburg is the administrative capital of South Africa; Pretoria is the judicial capital; and, Cape Town is the legislative capital. According to Thabelo, downtown Johannesburg was ... read more

I am really here! After all the planning (for one year) and preparation and excitement, I am actually sitting by the pool of the Garden Court Hotel in a wicker love seat under the trees with the noise of downtown traffic humming in the background. In this garden a hidden bird cries from the trees, emitting a long descending squawk that sounds very much like a baby starting to cry. Too reminiscent of last night on the plane! And on the edge of the pool is a woman with waist-length braids, who has been taking selfies for the last ten minutes! Patrick, the guide who brought me from the airport said that Sandton is a “second downtown”, built in the last thirty years on what used to be farmland. No hotels remain in the old downtown. ... read more

Yesterday was a slow day in Victoria Falls. Two days would have been better than three. Viewing the falls only takes 2-3 hours. Last night we did a sunset river cruise. YAWN! A few Americans, mostly So. Africans, and a group of 10 from China. Everytime the boat captain mentioned a bird or hippo sighting they all ran to that side with their cameras. Fun to observe. All of South Africa is a security camp. If you are middle class or above and own a home or condo the entire perimeter of your property either has a ten foot high wall or metal fence with a metal gate entry. On top of the walls are coiled barbed wire or if you are really loaded, then electrfied wires. Withinin these seemingly secured properties , all the first ... read more

Arrived yesterday after 2 GRUELING flights on Virgin Atlantic. Less legroom than Asian carriers. At hotel adjacent to airport. Drove to hotel in our rental car on the British (wrong side) of the road. Will leave shortly for 8 hr drive (sight seeing route) to overnite in Pilgrim's Rest. Will drive rim of Blyde River Canyon, third largest on earth. #1 in Namibia and #2 is Grand Canyon. Both of these are arid. Blyde is tropical and green. Hopefully we get good pics since weather is rainy. Tomorrow we head out for Kruger.... read more
