i made my way to the airport - and made it through security at 9am. It's an 11.35am flight.... For those of you who know my travelling style - I'm usually the person who's there just in time. Why wait around if you don't need to? Needless to say, the amount of times I've travelled and made it just as the flight was closing - more often than I'd confess to!! My husband is the one who needs to be a few hours early so he isn't stressed out. Not sure if it's a combination of our renovations (four tradies turning up at once just before 8am this morning wasn't conducive to hanging around at home) or finally being worn down from years of travelling with Todd and I'm finally in the habit of having to ... read more

Our guides had a surprise for breakfast....pancakes! This set us up for the day as we slowly travelled to the airport. We stopped to look at the third biggest canyon in the world and luckily the sun was actually shining for a change. It got very hot later on. We stopped for lunch at an area where gold and platinum are mined and it is also famed for its trout. We eventually got the airport and sad our goodbyes to the guides and our fellow travellers. It was sad to see people go off in different directions as half of our group were on another trip in South Africa.... read more

If there’s one note of consistency between my older writing and now, it’s that I usually have better things to do with my time when I’m tapping these out. In this case a speaker’s note for later in the week. In theatrical parlance, a script of sorts. Just as I am with improv, I’ll be pretty rubbish if I don’t prepare one for tomorrow. But here we are anyways. Let’s see. London was April, which means it’s time to move on to the bigger ticket item from September to November. Faced with three conferences more or less in a row, I opted to stay on the move for close to two months. This meant bouncing from South Africa, to Slovenia, to Russia, sandwiching in about two weeks of telecommuting from various hostels in odd parts of ... read more

There is a distinctive quality to light in Africa. I can emerge from a plane, stand on the tarmac, look at the sky.....and KNOW I am THERE ! When I was a teenager, I heard someone say that Africa is rather like a ' fever in your bloodstream, You never get rid of it.' Having been gone more than 30 years, I have to say I think it's true. Especially once you leave the cities far behind and head out into the bush. There are definitely " must see " things & places in South Africa : ~ Table Mountain, complete with it's tablecloth of clouds, Gorgeous white sand beaches, The Drakensberg Mountains, The Karoo desert, after a rain ! The vineyards of Constantia & Stellenbosch. Kruger Park Game Reserve. BUT, in this blog, I'm going ... read more

Hello All! I am well and truly settled into my third and final country in South Africa. Taylor has arrived and we are currently sitting in our lodge by the waterfront at Port Elizabeth, having flown in yesterday from Johannesburg. As you could probably tell from the ending of my last blog, I had my reservations about Jo'burg to say the least. And with good reason. I had met plenty travellers in Tanzania and Zambia with more than enough horror stories of being robbed from car windows, muggings in the street, and even being caught between gang shootouts. Having said this, I had also come across enough South Africans that were quick to tell me that the "City of Gold" was not as bad as others made it out to be. Furthermore, Taf, my Zimbabwean university ... read more
