Kaia Manzi to Pilanesberg--Tuesday, March 25th. 227 km (137 miles) Misty this morning but was mainly burned off by the time we left the campground at 7:30. Worked our way back through the road construction to the N-4 toward Pretoria. At exit 27, we left the toll-way and turned on R-515 toward Cullinan; then turned to the 513 into the Cullinan Village. The Village is comprised of the individual homes, built mainly of rock in a Dutch style, that were used by the bosses/managers to live in, while employed with the Cullinan Diamond Mine. Valerie walked around the Village as the homes have been turned into cute shops for artists to show their work. There was also a small park with used/old machinery and information about the history of the mine set out behind a cafe. ... read more

After a busy week of on-calls, GSWs (gun shot wounds), emergency theatre lists and needle stick scares we were well ready for a weekend break. First stop, Centurion for Australia vs SA T20. Let's hope the South Africans give the Aussies a good battering!! Sneaking in through a back entrance of the Supersport car park we were soon placed pitch side, beer (and vuvuzela!) in hands and ready for some lighting-paced cricket action. But not before a cheeky appearance on KFC Kids For Cricket Radio!! Surrounded by Afrikaners friends we quickly got sucked into the atmosphere. 6...4...6!!!! The South African openers were putting on a real show! Unfortunately the rest of the team didn't follow suit and on a slow, boggy outfield the Proteas slumped to a measly 135-9. With half time looming the trauma trio ... read more

The last few days of my stay in Kenya I spent in Niarobi. The first day I visited kibera which is a slum just on the outskirts of Nirobi town. I could only view it from a distance because I'm told it's not advisable to enter without a guide and I hadn't got time to arrange one. The sites of the slums even from a distance were a shock. Their homes, the overcrowding, the rubbish and the smell was discussing. Really hard to imagine living in such squalor. The following day, I've visited an elephant sanctuary set within Niarobi national park. I managed to find a motorbike taxi who took me. Asking each rider for a price to take me ranged from Sh5000 £35 to my eventual acceptance of Sh500 £3.50. It's approximately 20 mins from ... read more

Johannesburg is one of those places that has many assumptions and generalisations surrounding it. These assumptions are commonly made by those people who haven't actually visited the city, but who feel they should spread the word about what they've heard. Unfortunately most of the things these people have heard, are bad. I learnt this interesting point of fact before I arrived here in South Africa as I was warned by many of my closest friends and family about the dangers that await me in Joburg (Johannesburg). Of course I was told about all the crime and corruption that happens here. I was told that I'll land myself in trouble if I choose to travel to this country. I was also told that the country was extremely poor, having no clean water or electricity and that most ... read more

Had an extremely interesting conversation with some local girls I made friends with a few nights ago. We spent the evening discussing a form of medicine which I thought was no longer practiced on Earth - how wrong of me! According to google and it's reliable Wikipedia, witchcraft is the use of magical faculties and has been around since the earliest human cultures. Witchcraft is taken very seriously here. I was told that an educated, western doctor will step aside in the corridor of a hospital if a witch-doctor was to pass. According to locals here, if you truly want to harm someone or bring bad luck to someone, you must approach a witchdoctor and request a spell or potion to do so. Stemming from the devil and his power, witches are wives of Satan and ... read more

So Liv joined us late last night after many a flight delay and the trauma trio were finally reunited! An early start for us today - lots to do!! First stop - the 'Cradle of Humankind'. With me at the wheel we set off on the hour long journey to Maropeng. Despite a few wrong turns and stops for directions (plus a couple of speed bump mishaps (they come out of nowhere!!)) we eventually made it to Sterkfontein caves. This was the site of the discovery of two sets of human remains over 1.2 million years old which went along way towards helping our understanding of the classification system and evolution of man (basically we were hairier and smaller...Iwan boy I'm looking at you!!! ;)). Unfortunately the caves were closed until April, but we were assured ... read more

On Friday, February 17thwe began our adventure and before I had even left Gothenburg, the first hiccup of the trip had manifested. My itinerary would had me flying from Gothenburg to Stockholm with Norwegian Air and then meeting Phil at the airport in Stockholm and connecting to an Ethiopian Airlines flight to Addis Ababa and subsequently Johannesburg. However, on the morning of our departure, an Ethiopian Airlines from Addis Ababa to Rome was hijacked by the flight’s co-pilot, who locked the pilot out of the cockpit when he left to go to the bathroom and then took the plane to Geneva where he climbed out of the cockpit window and surrendered himself to authorities in hopes of claiming asylum. This sequence of events meant that there were disrupted Ethiopian Airlines passengers to accommodate and so our ... read more

Sleepy eyed and full of surprisingly delicious free South African plane wine we emerged full of excitement at OR Tambo airport. Jumping in an official airport taxi we took off for our home for 4 weeks - Swanage in Sandringham. We'd heard that 1/7 drivers in Jo'berg at any one time are drunk...and it certainly seemed like it!! People swerving in and out of lanes, emergency breaking and tooting galore!! Twenty minutes later we'd arrived...in completely the wrong neighbourhood! Our taxi driver, whilst nice enough, assured us that he hadn't quite got the best grasp of the city yet! Rolling his sleeves up Ed took the mantle (and the map!) and we headed towards Victoria avenue. Finally arriving in our neighbourhood, we couldn't help but stare out the window...not even cut the rope could distract us!! ... read more

We were going to leave on Monday morning but we had something to check on the car and it was pouring with rain. On the way to taking the car we were slowed down by really bad traffic hold ups and naturally thought it was an accident in the rain. Eventually we came across the cause of the delays and the many police cars that had been rushing past us with their sirens wailing. The taxis had decided to go on strike because of the new tolls imposed on Johannesburg's roads. They had parked their vehicles right across he carriageway blocking all traffic - fortunately for us on the other side. There were also taxis being stopped and their customers being forced off them and other taxis with their windows smashed in, presumably because they had ... read more
