Rovos Rail  From the Sublime to the. 'Cor Blimey' now a 1600km Train Safari following 160 year old trail forged out of the African Bushveld on - "the most luxuriour train in the world" - owner Rohan Vos. The night and morning in Pretoria we spent busily trying to make our 29ers look like Louis Vuitons and spit and polishing ourselves and the best of our gear so we didn't look like we had been backpacking for the last two months- we didn't really need to worry as we looked just as good as everyone else and occasionally better.  And as the 'Pride of Africa' departed from Rovos' Capital Park private station  we sat on our bed in our suite having our first of many glasses of Champagne (on the train) we just put our heads ... read more

I simply can't grasp the Bible. One of the guys at the prison was talking about the Bible a couple weeks ago, saying that it was unlike any other book he has ever read. He said that when you read other books, you can just go cover to cover without much thought to it. However, he said the Bible was something different. Each chapter and verse can not be read like other books. The words are real and heavy, often times needing to be read again and again before one can understand and even begin to grasp what they mean. I admit that I often times struggle with the Bible. The Bible has the ability to affect something deep inside of me and convict me. I am the type of person that is all or nothing. ... read more

With just 15 days left to go (and only 11 of those working days), it would be an understatement that I am suffering from a cocktail of emotions and stress. There is so much to be done and organised and waiting for visas does not make this any easier. Those things which you have to rely on a third party for really get my goat. I always, somehow, manage to feel out of control and if you know me you would know that Bazil does not do feeling out of control very well. It’s safe to say there is a force working here, because as of yesterday I was the only one to get their Schengen transit visa. One of my colleagues actually missed her flight cos her visa was not and has still not, been ... read more

The Hope Academy consists of about 25 players, ages 18-22, who all live in the same cell and have to follow the same rules and regulations. There are about 6 of us AIS staff who go into the prison every week. The AIS coach of the team is a local South African that can speak the same language of the prisoners. Most of the prisoners speak English, but some have trouble understanding us. The coach’s assistant is actually a former prisoner who was released and decided to join AIS as an intern. The other staff members are from America, Kenya, Japan, and South Africa. We have a very diverse group. Each day we take the team through an hour long life skill/bible study session, a fitness session, a technical session, and a tactical session. We are ... read more

I flew back to Cape Town, my favorite city in the country (despite it being completely un-South African and even moreso un-African). I booked into another hostel on Long Street and met back up with Sonny and Odei. Sonny is a steak connoisseur and researched the best steak houses in every place we showed up in. So steak was in the plans for most nights traveling with them. We went to a place called Nelson's Eye and it was great. They had detailed descriptions of the aging process of the steak and even invited guests to see behind the scenes. It was great but both of us agreed Havanas in Durban was a little better. We later went to a shisha lounge and met an Iraqi named Ahmad. I realize it sounds dubious hanging out with ... read more

The goal today was to go to Soweto, but after I called a tour company, I quickly realized that it was not going to happen. For a 3hr afternoon tour, they wanted to charge almost as much as the 10hr safari we went on a few days ago. I don’t think so. So we went to Pretoria instead, which is 51km up the road from where we are staying. We didn’t know what we were going to do there, but we thought we’d go anyway. We knew the Union Building is there, which is the South African government building. As you drive into town, you immediately face a massive building that sits on a hillside. As we got closer, we realized it was the University of South Africa, potentially the best and biggest in the country. ... read more

Well I have officially been placed in the Pretoria area for my six month internship. The ministries I will be involved in are prison ministry, coaching at a local school, coaching in Mamelodi township, office work, and also playing on a local team. I will also be helping organize a Freestyle tournament in local malls, the Grimolby Cup, Match for a Day, and also a tour to Uganda at the end of September and early October. I am excited to finally have been placed and can now really starting to engage where I am at. AIS is still trying to sort out all of my finances and my host family so please be in prayer regarding these two things. This week I helped out at a Holiday Camp in the Mamelodi township. AIS had previously trained ... read more
