Portland to Atlanta to Johannesburg to Pretoria to... wait - stop here and turn around while you still can. As it turns out, I can't tolerate antimalarials. Went a bit nutty, I did, on top of the worst nausea I've ever had and an absolute inability to sleep. After days without food or sleep, with vertigo, fever, and increasing paranoia (yeah, paranoia), which all led to increasing homesickness, I chose the only good option and came home. No vervet monkeys, no safari at Kruger National Park. While I'm certainly disappointed, I don't regret anything. I'm so fortunate to have had the opportunity, and I have learned many things, both leading up to and during the trip. I am grateful for all who helped me along the way. Tomorrow I leave for Albuquerque, New Mexico, where I'll ... read more

So I have now arrived in my fifth and final continent after nearly 11 months of travelling. My flight from Hong Kong, as all my long haul flights have been, was uneventful however my impression of Cathay Pacific did go up and so British Airways still ranks as my least favourite airline of the year with LAN as my favourite. I landed in Jo'berg and found myself stood in the immigration queue looking around puzzled. Why!? Becuase I have found that most times when you cross over a border you have to fill an immigration form in with the standard basic information - I now know my passport number without batting an eyelid. Anyway it seems South Africa is one of the easiest as all you do is handover your passport and you are duly given ... read more

It was a morning of sad goodbyes... Fiona and I, along with all the other people leaving the tour, got up early to wave off the truck full of new travellers, and a couple of our friends who were staying on the truck, as it headed off on its 3 weeks trip to Cape Town. After breakfast, everyone else started to leave to go to the airport for their flights home/onwards. Fiona and I hadn't quite worked out how we were getting to Pretoria, so we figured the best way was to take the free lift to the airport, which was just a few minutes away, and get a bus from there... Bad idea - we hadn't realised that on a Sunday, the buses were few and far between, and the ones that ran were very ... read more

so here i am. its been awhile. msc (mid service conference) is over and done with. it was really cool to see what everyone has been up to in their villages and everything. talking about best practices and everything. to be honest this would have probably been a lot more beneficial a few months ago but it was really nice seeing everyone. and taking a break from the village. a bunch of us stayed at the beach out of dars busy crowded smelly city center. did all the usual things that dar has to offer. lebanese food. movies. indian food. ice cream etc. and the most ridiculous thing was i fasting during all of this. celebrating ramadhan which i didnt really mind at all actually. a good exercise. msc is also about your medical check ups. ... read more

Today was the day we all finally parted ways. The others were all bound for the airport while I was due to leave for another hostel before setting off for Swaziland tomorrow. We had a last breakfast together and then I headed for the internet while the others went to finish packing. I got some bad news while I was in reception, not only were they unable to run the day trip of Pretoria I wanted to do but there was a problem with the three day trip into Swaziland as well. I went back to our room with the assurance they would sort something out in a couple of hours and arrived back in my own building to find there was no water and the others were complaining about not being able to get showers ... read more

... read more

The day before we go! 08/05/2009 It’s time to do all the final preparations and make sure that we haven’t forgotten anything! One of the “soon to be tourists” are a little blown-up in the mouth region, as the other decided to play a bit of his online game before booking the seats online, some valuable time was lost (even if it was only 5 minutes) and the only available window seat was the one overlooking the left wing. At first Melinda was a bit disappointed, but then she realised she only prepared herself for 1 disappointment, so nothing else could go wrong since she was totally unprepared for more hick-ups. Well it’s back to packing, not much time left to cross the t’s and dot the I’s since it’s already 22h30, not that it matter ... read more

Boy pet's Party Saturday, 14 March '09 My two pet's had great fun with Rian, Jolene, Brian, Lindy-Anne, Leonard, Johan (jnr) & his cuty girlfriend, Len & Jo-Ann at the "Bos Pub" in Moreleta. Evening started out great, but the boy pet forgot his picture taker thingy at home, so I'll just have to run the first section of the party by you without photos, just a few quick pic's taken with his mobile phone. The pets had loads of colourful drinks out of cute little glasses after which they had jummy baskets filled with goodies to eat, followed by more drinks and merry making! Just before midnight when the owner of the Bush Pub wanted to send them home, along came Rossouw and there was new life breathed into the party! The new smaller party ... read more
