Sun City is a resort located about a 2 hour drive from Pretoria, South Africa. It was originally built by a South African developer named Sol Kerzner (same guy that built the Atlantis resort in Nassau, Bahamas) in 1979, and it's still a very popular destination for locals looking for a gambling getaway, or some fun for the family. The entire resort is absolutely HUGE and is made up of 4 hotels, a wavepool, a manmade lake where you can jetski, parasail or waterski, a crocodile sanctuary, and two golf courses just to name a few of the attractions. I picked up my rental car on Friday afternoon and got to the resort around 430. The hotel I ended up staying at was the Sun City Main Hotel but there is also the Cabanas and the ... read more

So we set off on the Baz Bus for the first time and we didn't realise that our first journey would take approx 9 hours in total, first from Cape Town to George then a shuttle bus to our hostel in Outdshoorn (pronounced oates-horn). This second part wasn't too far but took ages as the road was very windey through the Outeniqua mountains, nice views and there had been some rock falls along the way but not on us thankfully. After a good nights sleep we had a busy day planned. First a visit to the Cango Caves which were formed by acid erosion and have lots of staligmites/nites which are rocky growths from both roof and floor of ceiling, quite unique apparently. Then we went for a tour of an ostrich farm which was hilarious ... read more

Rough Landing It was a Tuesday early evening when Debbie and I rushed for Heathrow to make our flight to Johannesburg ("Joburg" as they say). With all the stories we've heard about Joburg, we were pretty antsy about our arrival. Warning #1: Do not take unknown taxis. You must contract drivers for any type of transportation and you must know the exact pick up time and the drop off time at the destination. Our contact at Save - South Africa office had told us that we would have a driver to pick us up from the airport and we were told that he would be holding a sign with the Save the Children logo on it, but unfortunately we didn't have enough time to get his contact information. We were just running on luck. Touch down. ... read more

Geo: -25.7332, 28.2102This morning Paul and I decided to visit the local zoo in Pretoria. We arrived at 10am. As we arrived so early, the zoo was very quiet and this made it easier to move around and view the animals. We started with Paul's favourite animals and my least favourite – the reptiles. There were so many different species of snakes – they were a large range of colours, lengths, patterns and thicknesses. Seeing all these snakes was enough to give me goose bumps and send shivers down my spine. Further along we stopped to admire the interesting looking Galapagos Land Iguanas, crocodiles, various fish and other amphibians and the patchy coloured Gila Monster. We then came across an interesting sight – alligators sharing an enclosure with terrapins. I was surprised to see that the ... read more

This past weekend AIS hosted the 3rd annual Grimoldby Cup, which is a u17 tournament that invites teams from both South Africa and Africa as a whole. Last year the champions were a team from Nigeria, however they were unable to make it back to South Africa this year. The 2010 Cup consisted of teams from Polokwane, Soshanguve, Durban, Eersterust, Winterfelt, and 2 teams from Mamelodi. All of these are located in South Africa. This years final was a match between both Mamelodi teams as they proved to be a cut above the rest. Sam Pam, who was once a Nigerian international and professional in South Africa, now works with AIS and coaches the team from Polokwane. He was able to share his testimony during the awards ceremony of the tournament and it was a great ... read more

Saturday, September 18th We got up at 6am and Ferdi went to play golf with Konrad and dad Franz. He didn't do too badly, considering that he hadn't touched a golf club in four years. While Ferdi was whacking little white balls Talita went for a power walk with dad Mike and mom Mariana. It hurt! As a reward they went for omelets at Maxis while Ferdi had Wimpy with his golf crew. When we hooked up again we quickly packed a few picnic things and drove to Nkwe, a bush retreat a short drive east of Pretoria. Here we met up with a group of our friends and had an absolute blast catching up. It was almost like old times, except for little Seth who had joined the clan since our last get-together. Later we ... read more
