We spent one night at our friend Brett's house in Pretoria and then took two Kombi's via Brits to Rustenburg. We hired a taxi to take us to the Rustenburg Safari Camp, which was nestled in a park on top of a small mountain. There we met up with Tym (who we ended up calling Tymbo Dangerous), a Canadian we met in Nelspruit, and Redmond, a Brit that had worked with Tym in Madagascar previously. This camp was set up for the FIFA tournament. They had a tent with a flat screen tv and a projector to watch all the games, and were also set up to cook three meals a day. We cooked all of our own meals. We were getting ready to watch the US vs. England game, when about two hours before the ... read more

I am finally back in Pretoria after being on a playing tour since June 9th. So much has happened along the tour and I have realized that I am not very good at keeping a journal, but I will do my best to update about what we did throughout the tour. We started out the tour at a camp site in the middle of the country to go through tour orientation and to have a couple of training sessions together. Our team consisted of members from the US, UK, Mexico, Trinidad, and South Africa. We then played a practice match at the prison ministry, which I had helped out with for a couple of weeks before the tour. After the match, our coach gave his testimony and 2 of the hope academy prisoners gave first time ... read more

The Big Game. The One Elvis Has Been Waiting For. US vs Algeria. We bundled into the Ford Fiesta that came with the house, stocked up the cooler bag with beer and Jameson Whisky, and headed to Pretoria for the game. There were just four of us left now: Lori Ann had gone back to Manila early to escape the cold (and us footy fans) while Mark, the lone American, had to go back to work (none of the rest of us work in offices). Incredibly, we arrived in a familiar part of Pretoria despite me driving and Tim navigating. Our parking spot just a block from the stadium was next to a park with several bums in it obviously intoxicated. I got out of the car, looked at them, and shook my head. Then the ... read more

June 24th The morning smelled of victory and the evidence was everywhere to be seen. Americans littered the hostel once again, remnants of face paint were left on our faces as we talked about the game over breakfast. The energy that morning was really special and optimism was at a high, everyone was thinking we could make it to the semi finals of the World Cup. After starting out the day I met up with Trevor to venture into Pretoria and buy some essentials for the trip. I planned on buying a tent because the cost of South African dorm rooms were getting ridiculous, $50 for a dorm bed is insane and despicable if you ask me. So we headed for Hatfield and another area called Brooklyn, walking a total of close to 10 kilometers to ... read more

June 22nd Story of my trip so far: Losing things. I’ve lost more things than I can count. A few things really meant a lot to me, but a lot of the other things are just small and luxuries, not necessities. Like my pocket knife or my cell phone, I don’t really NEED them but they are nice to have. So when I realized (as I went through airport security) that I left my cell phone at Kieron’s house I kicked myself once. And when the airport baggage security saw that I had left my pocket knives in my carry on, I lost those, and kicked myself twice! It was almost 2am when I had woken up at the Lanseria Airport, in between Johannesburg and Pretoria. I was tired and a bit grumpy and when I ... read more

Bush Fire festival in Swaziland was soooo AWESOME! Showed up with Justin and Hanan to the campground adjacent to the festival for 3 nights. The festival took place at a very special venue “House of Fire” in the country side of Swaziland. With a partially covered amphitheater stage made with custom art work sculptures built into the structure. Like nothing i"ve seen before so much time and love put into it. Behind the amphitheater area was a full festival stage with a field that held up to 10,000 people. The music was very unique world / African music. A bit different from music I am accustomed to. Some headliners were the Parlatones and Freshly Ground both of which played at the World Cup opening concert in Johannesburg last Thursday. Many local Swazi's attended, a strong ... read more

So within two days of being in Cape Town, I had stomach problems. My die hard Travel Blog fans will remember I got a terrible case of the flu last time I was in South Africa. Admittedly, this time wasn't nearly as bad as last time, but it still kept me from eating for a couple days. Almost immediately after getting over it, I picked up the cold which I still have right now. I don't know what it is with this country, but I'm anxiously awaiting the day where I am 100% healthy. I booked into a hostel on Long Street, which is party central in Cape Town, and is sometimes compared to New Orleans' Bourbon Street both for its atmosphere and its appearance. I chatted with the hostel owner for a couple hours. He ... read more

I'll try to keep this post mainly focused on what it was liek to be at the johannesburg fan fest at innesfreepark for the opening world cup game of south africa v mexico. South Africans affectionately call their team "Bafana Bafana" - whose meaning I haven't got a clue of yet. Their team has a fifa ranking of 83 whereas mexico has a fifa ranking of 17. In all honesty I expected bafana bafana to be blown out with something along the lines of 3-1 for mexico. The opening minutes of the match seemed to verify my initial guess but around the 25th minute bafana bafana really started heating things up and it was an entirely new game. The goal scored by the south african forward sometime in the 50-60th minutes was a shocker. I ... read more
