Thanks for the good wishes messages. It was really nice to find them waiting when we logged on. Arrived safely early Saturday evening still 28 degrees! What a bustling place! Once we got through the onslaught of kids trying to sell us packs of Kleenex (3 Dirhams - about 5p) went walk about through the start of the Medina. What an experience! It was dark by then and we decided it was probably better to go back in daylight -too many alleys and Morrocan males to cope with, though no offers of camels for Lauren which was a bit disappointing - Ive told her she must try harder! Took a good look round yesterday (Sunday) through lots of souks selling pretty much everything, including tortoises of all sizes, iguanas and baby chameleons. Ended in Djeema El ... read more

During my two flights to Morocco (London to Madrid, Madrid to Marrakech), I had images of what it would be like. Exotic foods, wonderful smells, traditionally-clad people. And the country did not dissapoint. From the moment I landed I was thrown into a mixture of visual stimuli including a desert-esque landscape, traditionally-dressed muslims and extremely white Europeans in town for the weekend vacation. All this coupled with the sounds of French and Arabic being spoken very rapidly. I quickly came to realize that not many people spoke English...thus I would be surrounded by people but feel very alone. I took a cab to the Medina area of the city in search of a place to stay. It was not long until I found that all the hotels were full as it given the European holiday. I ... read more

Morocco is a country of people just hanging out.... Well, after 10 long days, Im finally back ''home''. I got in last night around midnight into Vienna. I think the trip back was longer than the entire trip total! Ill try to give a quick run of the itinerary... Day 1 leave for Bratislava from Vienna via train. Catch quick bus to airport and then plane to Germany's Frankfurt-Hahn airport. Don't let the name confuse you...Frankfurt Hahn is about 2 hours from Frankfurt. Slept in airport. Day 2 wake up early after uncomfortable sleep in airport and catch plane to Jerez, Spain. From airport catch bus to Jerez bus station, then bus to Algeciras. In Algeciras, buy ferry tickets to Tangier, Morocco. Catch: must take taxi to Tarifa, Spain...20 min away. Catch ferry to Morocco and ... read more

After spending a couple of cool days in Ouarzazate I hopped the bus to Marrakech. This leg of the journey would take me across the High Atlas Mountains, absolutely stunning. The sights were amazing and I now wish I had spent more time there... Have to give kudos to the bus driver; he was a brave man maneuvering that big rig through some pretty tight turns, passes and switchbacks! Although it is only about 200kms distance it still took us nearly five hours to get to Marrakech, should give you an idea of the trip...haha.... Arrived and with the help of the petit taxi driver (who was a HUGE Neil Young fan and kept singing "Tonight's the Night" to me as we wove in and out of traffic!) and several local kids (with some confusion) I ... read more

The Adventures of Fatima and Ab-Joel I have wanted to go to Morocco for quite a while and in the last few weeks I spent a lot of time trying to find the cheapest way to get there. In the end the cheapest way I could find was to fly to the south of Spain and then catch a ferry across the Gibralta Strait. I asked a few people if they would like to join me and often people were very positive but in the end only Morgan (Fatima), an American girl from Texas, was game enough to come. We left on the afternoon of the 5th and caught a train to Bratislava (Slovakia). From the train station we got a bus to the airport and caught a flight to Frankfurt (Germany). We arrived about 11pm ... read more

After breakfast, Jo and I headed off to the Saadian Tombs, located just south of the Koutoubia Mosque. The tombs are well hidden in a maze of narrow streets and my navigation seemed to be on the money until we made the mistake of following a sign with an arrow pointing to Saadian Tombs. It transpired that an enterprising businessman has set up the sign to point tourists straight at his shop and we had to go through it in order to get to the block where the tombs were located. Just as crafty, even if leaching from the merchants’ good idea, was the guide that waited for us at the exit of the shop. The tombs were lavish in design and featured intricate Arabic designs and verse on the surfaces. Our guide (he had followed ... read more

Breakfast was the standard French stick and jam on the roof terrace of Hotel CTM. The sight of a now quiet Djemaa el-Fna belied the action from the previous night, the odd food scrap being the only remaining remnant. Paul, Jo and I were all stuffed from a week in Morocco and decided on a quiet day of limited sightseeing. This was to be Paul’s last day with us as he was booked on the 2100 train back to Tangier – leg one of a long trip back to Newcastle. Our first stop was Palais el-Badi , a 400 year old palace in an equal state of ruin and repair where we spent an hour or so taking photos and discovering all the nooks and crannies. Towards the Ville Nouvelle is Koutoubia Mosque – at 70 ... read more

Having found the public transport to be consistently inconsistent during our Moroccan adventure, we were not surprised that out overnight bus did not arrive on time in Marrakech. We were very surprised to be pulling into the bus stop 40 minutes early at 0420. This posed a bit of a problem as we were none-to-keen to be out walking around town in the dark. Fortunately a bakery displayed an opening time of 0500 on the window so we stayed put at the station, eventually passing the time over bread, jam and hot chocolate. It was 0630 when the sun started threatening the dark of night so we hit the streets in search of the main part of town. It was a good 10 minutes before the three of us realised that something was amiss and it ... read more

Be brave enough to live life creatively Alan Alda While my parents were skiing in McCall, Idaho I went to hot, sunny Marrakech on my day off. If I am sweating in a T-shirt in March I don’t even want to think about August. They weren’t kidding when they said it gets hot here. Today’s bus ride to the city was a bit more exciting than usual and I blame it on the heat. Nobody is very happy to have the summer heat set in already. The rising gas prices have forced up the bus fare from 15 or 17 dirhams to 20 dirhams from Kelaa to Marrakech. One woman must have been convinced she was cheated by the guy on the bus who takes money since she spent at least the first half hour of ... read more

When I arrived in London I told myself that if I did nothing else I would travel to Iceland and Morocco, two places that are not the easiest to pop into from Melbourne. Mission accomplished. When I arrived back from Morocco I promised I would immediately write interesting and informative entries here about my trip. Mission not accomplished. It's been a while coming - although I had a wonderful, fabulous time, the post-holiday high has gone and I'm less motivated to write about my trip. This is a start. I went to Morocco with Intrepid Travel, a company I am more than happy to plug. Not usually one for organised tours, this turned out to be perfect for what I was after; I was a bit sick of travelling on my own and not in the ... read more
