Snake charmers with cobras and flutes, watermen with jugs and tin cups, witch doctors and their lizards, 3 dirham orange juice stands, cookies galore, souq keepers eager to make a sale, donkeys pulling carts . . . an overwhelming fusion of sights, sounds, and smells - this is the medina of Marrakesh. The Marrakesh medina is another world - obviously contrived to cater to the massive tourist crowd - but distinct from any other place I have ever been. It is the city's prime attraction; there are mosques to draw some attention, and a newer part of town where the four of us found a hotel, but the main energy of Marrakesh finds focus in its core. For the wanderer and the people watcher, it is a Mecca . . . assuming you find some ... read more

Hi all! I haven't written in a while, sorry about that. Now I will update on the week in Morocco though! It was an amazing trip, the scenery was gorgeous and so varied! And the Muslim culture was fascinating to see. The downside of the trip...lots of bus riding, and I was sick most of the time. Moroccan food did not agree with me so I was nauseous and then I also got a nasty cold towards the end, but all in all, it was a great trip! Now for the details: Traveling and Marrakech We left Valencia at 9:30pm on Friday and headed towards the southern border city of Tarifa. This was a 10 hour bus ride, long but we watched movies and slept a lot. Then we got on the ferry to Tangiers which ... read more

4/7/07 Casablanca--Marrakech We arrived at the train station 5 minutes after the last train to Marrakech was scheduled to leave. Luckily, the train was delayed so we waited in the ticket line (which of course was not moving at all), finally bought our tickets, and then ran to the platform. In a couple of minutes, the train came but it was completely packed. People we pushing and yelling, I wasn’t sure we were even going to get on (you have to remember that all of had our backpacks as well). We kept moving further and further back and eventually found a door that was not overflowing with people. We placed our bags in the overhead space, and since there were no seats we all ended up standing back by the door. We were completely in the ... read more

Salam waylaykoom ! Marrakech is amazing! The sounds, smells and chaos abound and can be overwhelming, but addictive all the same! Our Riad L' Orangeraie is a calm oasis where we retreat after bargaining in the souks and visiting the Islamic sights of the city. We have enjoyed wonderful cuisine, both Moroccan and French influenced at our riad and at Villa Flore, a riad owned by a couple from Paris. We are not so brave as to sample sheeps head, pigeon and other such delicacies cooked in the food stalls! Snake charmers, storytellers, acrobats, musicians and dancers fill the Djemaa el Fna Square, which also has orange juice stalls, Berber water sellers, and food stalls that move into the square in the late afternoon. The Square is an incredible experience throughout the night and early morning ... read more

Hello at last from Morocco!!! So, to fill you in on what's been happening since I left Ireland (if I can figure out how to work this arabic keyboard ... nightmare) I left Ireland just over 2 weeks ago and flew to Marbella, Spain where I was to meet my 15 travelling buddies for the next 6 months. A great mix of ages and nationalities, yet everybody has similar interests and seem to get on surprisingly well. To give you an idea, the youngest is 19 and the oldest is ... well, to be polite I'll not mention his exact age, but he is retired. As for nationalities, I'm the only Irish person, the others being from England, Wales, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Canada. Unfortunately we ended up spending almost a week ... read more

Hello dearies! Ok so I apologize for the long delay in the blog post! We arrived back in London at 4 in the morning on Monday morning only to wake up a few hours later to go to class! I definitely thought of skipping but we got free Indian food after class, and I was not about to pass up a delicious free meal in London! And to boot, I have been recuperating from a weird stomach thing for the past couple of days and sleeping has apparently been a higher priority than letting you all know that I am alive and safe…. Sorry about that… Ok, so enough of the lame excuses. Morocco was AMAZING!!! To start off with a bit of the notorious flawed McMillan luck when it comes to flying that I can’t ... read more

MoroccoWe arrived by Easy Jet to Marrakesh and clear blue skies at about 11am on Wednesday 13th December. After waiting in a long queue to get cash from the only cash machine in the airport (you cannot get Moroccan currency before you arrive), we headed outside to get a taxi to the Medina, the old town. We were expecting an onslaught of taxi drivers trying to con us out of our newly acquired money - but instead were left to wander out of the terminal building aimlessly until we found a waiting taxi driver. After some minimal haggling (a taxi ride to the medina should cost you about 70Dh), we were on our way. Arriving at the medina is a bit of a culture shock. The majority is pedestrianised, so the taxi drops you on the ... read more

Ryan & Jen’s Trip to Marrakech: 9th Feb 2007 - 12th Feb 2007 (Hotel: La Parmeraie Golf Palace) When we first touched down at Marrakech International Airport the first thing we noticed, apart from the blue cloudless sky, was how small the airport was. There were only 2 other planes on the tarmac and we were allowed to casually stroll from the plane 200 metres to the passport control area. It’s at this point that you notice the detail with which everything is made in Morocco. We are surrounded by mosaic tiles and intricate hand carved woodwork. Upon meeting our driver, the first named Mustafa of our trip, we took a moment to capture the glory of the snow-topped Atlas Mountains which would become one of the most memorable icons illustrating the beauty of this city ... read more

Mostly photos today. Not much to say except that it was wonderful to have Michèle visit me, show her around Marrakech and host her at my home for a couple days. She was a guest speaker in one of my English classes and played interview with them, asking and answering questions. When I had my back tuned at one point she asked the kids what they had learned about American culture from me and one girl said that she learned that women can live alone and be happy with their career. It was an influence I hadn't thought about and I am grateful to Michele for pointing out that the differences I make are one more than one level. As I have experienced with previous guests, it's refreshing to see Morocco and Kelaa through new eyes. ... read more

DAY 5 Had breakfast after 8ish and this time round we actually saw other people in our Riad eating breakfast. There was also a man leaving and I remembered him from the night when we were eating at the Market Food Stalls, because he was sitting behind me. He was from Strassburg, but he lived in France. He was traveling on this own but when he originally booked tickets there was supposed to be more people. Good to see nothing stopped him. We made our way to Ensamble Artisale and did last minute shopping. We found that the things here were less expensive then the souks, but the again, we were just probably really bad at haggling!!! I got my name written in Arabic! We dropped off our stuff to the Riad, then made our way ... read more
