DAY 1 Stayed awake waiting for 4:30am so I could take a cab to Victoria Station to catch the Gatwick Express to Gatwick to meet Silvia and Roland and check in. I was really hoping to catch up on some sleep on the plane but I couldn’t get comfortable! At one point I started feeling dizzy and when I got to the back of the plane to use the toilet I fainted. But it wasn’t anything serious. I was soon back on my feet! When we landed in Marrakesh, I was so excited about being there, I didn’t even think of what happened on the flight. We lined up at Passport control which took ages, so we kept swapping lines to see which one would go first. We changed some money at arrivals and found the ... read more

After having one to many farewell drinks with Frank the night before I got up at half Eight and attempted to pack my bag for morocco. Packing may have been slightly affected by the previous night activities as I noticed I had left my passport at home when I was half way into London. managed to leg it back and got to Gatwick an hour before the flight. luckily there were about three people on the fight so had no trouble gettin on the plane. On arrival the weather in Marrakesh was no better than england...5 degrees and raining hard..... Woke up at seven in the morning and hopped on mini bus with about ten randoms and headed out for the desert. At about nine we had hit the atlas mountains which were freezing cold and ... read more

Marrakech is one of the Imperial cities of Morocco, and has a palace on the edge of the Medina, though like all Moroccan Palaces occupied by the king, you can't see the palace, just the giant gate around it. We arrived in Marrakech the night before Eid and the city was crowded. Smoke from barbecues made the air thick and my eyes blurry. It seems many people travel from the North of Morocco to Marrakech for Eid and the Medina is so packed its hard to move. We get lost and tired, and it takes us forever to find where we are going. After freaking out at each other, we find a hotel and set out for food. There is a large square in the center of the Medina, and at night, a hundred kiosk set ... read more

Moroccans gather around storytellers and comedians, while tourists sit down for dinner at food stalls serving anything from couscous to sheep's head. Henna artists and fortune tellers wait for customers, as orange juice and dried fruit sellers try to get the attention of passers-by. Unknown scents and the snake charmers' unbearable music are in the air. Welcome to the Djemaa El-Fna, the central plaza and 'heart' of Marrakech, at nightfall... Enjoy the hustle and bustle of this circus for as long as you can, for it is unlike anything you've ever seen before. Once you've had enough, retire to your riad for the night, or take a break from Marrakech altogether... After further visa delays caused me to postpone my departure for Papua New Guinea to early January, I packed my bags and spent 10 days ... read more

Alright, alright I know it has been a while but internet prices are high here. To twll you about Morocco I decided to do it in pieces with a few (hopefully short) comments and pictures for each blog. I am also warning you that I don´t intend to even try and edit this so try to enjoy the typos. Casablanca does Bite! It is now safe to admit that while in Casablanca, for the first time since I began my travels in March, I was having doubts about my choice of destinations. In short Casablanca sucks. There isn´t much to see, the medina is so-so, I was havin trouble finding restuarant/cafes where I felt comfortable eating. Thamk goodness for schwarma! It didn´t help that it was the last days of Ramadan and a lot of places ... read more

Hello everyone, thought i better get in touch and let you all know i'm still alive. We've been bush camping for the past week so this morning has been filled with the luxuries of hot showers and laundry!! I'm still having an amazing time, despite the fact that everyone on our trip has had the dreaded D&V followed by colds for the past week, hopefully we're all recovered for now. Illness kind of put a hold on sightseeing for a few days so I missed a lot of Rabat and all of Casablanca, except for the delicious pattiserie opposite the campsite! Since then we have driven across the Middle and High Atlas mountains, and it has been freeezing!! If there's one thing I wish I'd packed it's a hot water bottle, and a decent sleeping bag ... read more

Good Lord. Marrakech is utterly wonderful. Who wouldn't love wandering lost through mazes of narrow, dark, red clay alleyways (and souks) occassionally coming across blindingly sunny openings where tooth pullers smile at you and snake charmers wrap pythons around your neck sans asking?... read more

From the moment we stepped off the plane, Marrakech was one of those cities where we were transported in time, culture, spirituality, where we lost all sense of the outside world, where we were absolutely charmed by strangers. Marrakesh was founded by the Berber leader, Youssef BEN TACHFINE who came from the desert with his tribe, Sanhaja. Marrakesh is a dramatic contrast: The modern city is surrounded with beautiful gardens and the Medina, old part of the city, is one of the most fascinating sites in Morocco, albeit a little chaotic in parts! Day one we spent exploring the sights, souks (markets), smells and sounds of Marrakech in the swealtering African sun. Marrakech is famous for its spices and potions. The photo of Alison, myself and the spice man is good example of the array of ... read more
