Despite having a good map it wasn’t until my third day in Marrakesh that I managed to navigate my way purposefully and accurately through the maze of alleys in the souks to reach everyone’s primary and ultimate destination the Jemaa el Fna square. But of course that’s the point of the souks - to lose your sense of order as well as direction, to give yourself up to the claustrophobic sensuality and vibrancy of the markets. If you really want to know where you are, the map does give you some idea of the layout, but the minute you open it to re-establish your position, a young boy will be insisting he leads you to “la place”, as the Jemaa is simply known. Better just to drift and head for any glimpse of daylight from ... read more

We arrived in Marrakech (also spelled Marrakesh in case you're wondering) after our 8 hour train ride and went looking for our hotel. This time we stayed at Hotel Amani. Again, we dumped our bags and headed right out to find food. We took a petit taxi (a small taxi) out to the big market and immediately saw that this was very different than Fez. There were tents with tables and chairs set up with just about any kind of food you could want. There were small children, who should have been in bed, out running around begging for money and huffing paint. There were drunks and many more young people than what we had seen in Fez. Where Fez was traditional and seemed mostly untouched by tourism, Marrakech seemed like the tourist hotspot. We ... read more

14-20 May After stumbling back to Efroud I got back on a bus and headed on to the second great city of Morocco - Marrakesh. After passing up the opportunity to walk through some beautiful gorges along the way due to concerns about getting sick again, I got sick again - this time in the small city of Ourzazate. The same symptoms presented themselves and I lay in bed for two days before going to the doctor in town. After walking up a set of dark stairs that didn't inspire too much confidence I arrived in a waiting hall in a second-story private clinic. After talking to the doctor in a mix of English and Spanish I told him that I was worried about malaria. He briefly examined me and didn't think that was the ... read more

Thanks to the Mauritanian Consulate, we now have 22 days to get from Marrakech to Senegal. Which means the next three weeks is going to be a mad headlong rush through perhaps the driest, hottest, least-serviced-by-public-transport part of Africa there is. We can't wait. We left Fes, and returned to Casablanca on one of Morocco's relatively speedy and comfortable trains (2nd class is more than sufficient, but nobody gets a reserved seat, so it's every person for him or herself). Suze hadn't seen Casa before, so we did a quick loop of the medina and returned to the still-massive Hassan II mosque. Our real reason for being in Ca... read more

An age has passed or what seems like one since the last (first!) blog and sometimes I feel like I've been busier here than I was in London. Although that seems like a crazy idea too. At the moment I'm sitting in the airport in Marrakech waiting for our flight back to Madrid. Marrakech has been nuts. We have had five days roaming the souks and trying to avoid being run over by the local cascade of motorbikes, cars and donkeys. The weather has been mostly sunny and very hot today. Its quite a tiring place in many ways with a constant barrage of noise and pollution and activity. I guess that's part of the charm too. We stayed in a very nice little riad that was about a 15 minute walk to the centre. ... read more

Sleeping in an Airport! When I decided to backpack around Europe, Michael and Joel told me that no backpacking experience was complete without overnight bus and train rides (which I have done) or sleeping in airports and train stations (both of which I have now done too!!). Our chance to sleep in an airport came at Gatwick en route to Morocco and it certainly was an interesting experience! Michael and I found an empty bench and settled down for the night in our sleeping sheets and our bags tied to the bench legs! I must admit I slept better than I thought I would, probably because it was a pretty safe location! There was a constant murmer of people during the night and PA announcements telling us that any bags found unattended would be taken away ... read more

Well, Marrakech is less exciting then I thought. I get lots of weird stares...doesnt feel too good. Now I understand how foreigners felt in Japan. Tourist Info Office was not helpful AT ALL....so instead of getting on and off taxis, I decided to go the expensive way and took th city sightseeing tourbus. Its very convinient actually. The audio guide gave me lots of info as well. and it took me to all the sights. Saw the city in a day literally. The palace and ruins were pretty cool; very dessert feel....haaa My hotel is such a ripoff.....argh... I didnt really do much....why am I so sleepy already..... Tomorow is the dessert trip...hope that would be more exciting ne^^ ... read more

The day after spring camp ended, and I got more than five hours of sleep for the first time in over a week, two of my uncles and a cousin arrived in Marrakech. I had just enough time to catch the train down from Rabat and arrived at the hotel less than a half hour before they did. My mother’s brother Charlie and her younger sister’s husband David had brought with them Isaac, David’s son. I’ve gotten used to explaining familial relations since there is no word in Arabic for “cousin”. It’s too generic. All relations have specific words. I can’t call David my uncle. He’s my ‘mother’s sister’s husband’. Isaac is my ‘mother’s sister’s son’. It seems more complicated but is also much more precise. We started out our week in Marrakech. It is by ... read more
