I spent the first weekend in November in Marrakech, Morocco, a city in the central(ish) part of the country. Even though I’d never heard of Marrakech before this year it is apparently the most visited city in Morocco by tourists which isn’t really saying that much because Morocco (of course) pales in comparison to the other countries I’ve visited (Italy, Greece, Turkey) as far as tourists go. Our program director, my grandma, and my senoras all told me it was necessary to have a guy accompany my girlfriends and me to Morocco and so we elected Kyle, a good friend of mine since freshmen year, to come. We caught our flight out of Madrid and were on our merry way. The flight was actually a story within itself. My friend Becca and I plopped down in ... read more

It’s a fragile thing, my relationship with Marrakech. Classic love-hate. I am here for the third time in less than a month, this time with my mother and sister in our last few days together before my mother returns to the states. The first time I was here was over two weeks ago. My sister and Elizabeth and I arrived from Fez, and in 24 hours I was sure I was thoroughly charmed, if not quite fully in love. After the three of us left the city for a few days in the mountains we returned, and that first feeling of enchantment was no longer there. On that second visit to the city we had one day and we wandered the souks. We were with a friend from Sacramento who happened to be visiting Marrakech, and ... read more

So, off we go (my husband and myself), on our umpteenth short trip. We have 3 children, aged 15, 14 and 6, so our dream of a round-the-world trip is on hold for a few years. But, thanks to our amazing child-carer, we can take short trips of 4-6 days a few times a year. For me, this is also the beginning of a new life, since I leave my job of 11 years tomorrow, then go home, pack, and drive to the airport :-) Anyway, with so many changes going on at the same time, I decided it was about time I joined the 21st century, at least with a travel blog. It's taken about a month of planning to get this far (we are travelling with 2 other couples ...), and our itinerary is: ... read more

Marrakech seemed to blur together. We spent six nights in our hotel, which was probably modeled after a castle rather than an actual hotel. Its staircases, courtyards, and turrets, all reminded us of this as we dragged our suitcases through its seemingly endless corridors. It was very apparent that we were among thousands of tourists as well. While French tourists made up the majority, we’d see the occasional Italian, Spanish, German, and English tourist. After living for four weeks totally immersed in a medieval medina and with a Moroccan host family, this was just too much for me. Everything seemed to be a tourist trap, everything was expensive, and everything I had already seen before. We ended up spending some time at a girls’ boarding school where we ate meals with them, played games, did homework, ... read more

Our cab dropped us near the Djama el Fna: Marrakech’s notorious central square, described as the center of night life for locals and as a twenty-four hour tourist trap. From the road we entered a pedestrian only pathway and walked past a park, where rows of boys sat on benches and stared intently at us—challenging us to break our determined, straight-ahead gazes. “Hello gazelle.” “Hey sweetie. Welcome to Marrakech.” We kept our eyes forward, pointed in the direction of the strip of white lights that our cabbie had pointed us toward. At the center of the square was a maze of tables covered in neat rectangles of white oilcloth; a cluster of tables belonged to one food stall, and each of the fifty or so food stalls was lit with a single bare bulb or a ... read more

To be honest, our first impression of Morocco was not inspiring. The drive from Tangiers to Casablanca was a sad sight - fields and fields littered with garbage and plastic bags (mind you, we were warned). However, it did not take long for us to forget this image as, starting with our visit to the Hassan II Mosque, things improved dramatically. It seems like so much time has passed since we left Fez, but really it has only been 6 days. The diversity of the landscape has been amazing. Just when we think we have had the ultimate experience something else catches our attention. Martin, the answer to your question is YES. Don did buy a fossil - a very large one!! What a crazy, stressful city! When we first arrived it took very little time for our driver to get hopelessly lost in the maze of streets (especially without his co-driver who stayed back in Rabat to pick up our visas). He hired a couple of local teens to direct us to our hotel which was right off the main square Djemma el Fna. This is where the action is. The square is full of entertainers, scammers, snake charmers, etc. It was fairly quiet during the day, but it really came alive at night. You had to be on your toes at all times to avoid getting hit by the scooters that were constantly zipping through. The internet here is pretty fast and reasonably easy to locate internet cafes around. So we thought we would take advantage ... read more

This was our second day in Morocco. We went back to the market for the morning. Same things, just as great the second time. Only now we knew what was coming, and we were veterans at bargaining. I got all my gifts today for everyone back home. I’m shocked all over again at where I am. This is amazing. After some shopping, me Ryan and Jamie sit down at a café and have some more mint tea. This time it has full mint leaves in them. It is so good. I can’t wait to bring some home for my Mudd Puddlers  We have a long drive today, and are heading more inland. I’m not sure exactly where we’re going, but it’s far. At least six hours of traveling. The roads are on the sides of ... read more

“The world is an open book, and those who do not travel read only a page" This trip symbolized a whole new chapter in my life. It is impossible to put into words the things I saw and the feelings I felt these past six days. It's hard to find the right adjectives to describe things. So bear with my horrible writing and try to use your imagination to play with my words. Day 1: Flying from Barcelona to Casablanca and driving to Marrakech. We took the plane from Barcelona. Immediately as I enter the airport the fact that I'm in a foreign place smacks me in the face. Everyone is wearing different clothes and signs are in Arabic and French. All of a sudden I stand out like a sore thumb that I'm not from ... read more

Until this point we had been in Tanzania where we were completely taken care of and London which was essentially like being back home. Sure they talk funny but at least we could understand them! Just kidding British friends! Entering Morocco was a bit like running into a cultural brick wall! The minute we walked out of the airport we were surrounded by AT LEAST 10 taxi drivers yelling prices at us in a currency that we hadn’t even bothered to convert yet! Luckily there was another tourist there to save our butts and told us that it would be best to take the bus! We stayed in Marrakech for most of our time in Morocco.
