Sunny Marrakech You can tell I'm slowly becoming a Pom when the thought of a few days of blue skies and 20'c maximum temps is like heaven on earth! Absolutely loved the sun in Marrakech and spent as much time in the sun as I could and even got a little sun burnt (yes bad I know but oh so good!). Marrakech as a holiday destination is definitely on the up and up with a fancy new airport soon to open, heaps of development going on and more cheap flights from UK/Europe bringing hundreds of tourists to the city - give it a few years and I think it will be one of the more popular sunny weekend breaks. The flight over was pretty spectacular with views of Portugal, Spain, the Rock of Gibraltar etc. Once ... read more

Geo: 31.6392, -8.00477Saturday was uneventful. We had to be up early to head to the airport. I wanted to take all the toys we had and give them to the children as we left but they were all sleeping. To much partying the night before. There was some heightened security around the airport. Apparently the King was flying out that day. We didn't have any problems at the airport. You just have to fill out another departure card before going through passport control. No worries. In the end, I am so happy we got the opportunity to visit this place. And I think Steve, Beth and Jim agree. Although very intimidating initially the Moroccan people are some of the nicest people I have ever met. Always welcoming you and joking with you. They are very friendly ... read more

Geo: 31.6334, -7.9996The next day our confidence level had grown and we were ready to take on the square cameras in hand. First, breakfast. Our riad was like a B&B and breakfast was included. They served pancakes... well, crepes. And bread with jams with coffee and juice. We went down to the square and took pictures. You should negotiate the price before you start snapping away and you will inevitably be hounded by others for more money even though you already paid another guy. We weren't keen to hold the snakes so we photographed from afar. The monkeys however Beth and I held. You must check out the videos on you tube. http://youtube.com/user/sgskinny We ventured back into the souks, this time to buy. We found our way to the spice area and Steve found the guy ... read more

Geo: 31.6392, -8.00477So we are off to Africa. I can't believe we are going. Steve checked a book out from the library so we could do some research. Based on the book I had imagined that Marrakech would be like Tijuana, Mexico. A poor place with a lot of haggling and begging. So I hoped I had the mindset to venture into this incredibly foreign place. We had to wake at an ungodly hour to head to the airport. We were flying Easyjet out of Gatwick. Easy enough. Gatwick is the closest airport besides Kent which flies limited passenger flights. Our flight departed at 7:30am so we needed to be there about 6ish. We picked Beth up in Canterbury along the way so we were all very groggy. The bonus if there could be one..... no ... read more

Day 4 - it was Saturday, so a "day of rest" for us. But with the Souks so close by, we had a great time wandering around, knowing that we couldn't buy anything (see explanation on day3). We had bought tickets to the Marrakech Museum and the Medersa on Friday, so we spent the morning visiting these very interesting places. Definitely not to be missed. Back to Mrs. Peretz for lunch, and then another walk around the Jemma El Fna, this time during the day. There were a few snake-charmers around, but not so many - maybe because it was November, and there weren't many tourists? Saturday evening, we had booked tickets to Ali's Fantazia. Again, everyone was very accommodating - the owner of our Riad had very decently driven over on Friday to book a ... read more

It's taken me much too long to get back to writing up this blog of Marrakech, but I'm here now, so off we go. Day 1: Tel Aviv - Barcelona - Marrakech I'll start with our first mistake - flying Iberia. We actually had a really cool route of Tel Aviv - Barcelona - Marrakech and back the same way. We chose Iberia because they had short connections, we could send our luggage all the way through, and we got BA miles :-) BUT ... two weeks before we left, Iberia called and said that the Barcelona - Marrakech flight was cancelled. They were going to route us through Casablanca, which meant taking an earlier flight from Tel Aviv and spending 8 hours in Barcelona. Ok, what can you do? Nothing much - just accept it. ... read more

Day 6 - today we were supposed to have a whole day in Marrakech, leaving the hotel at around 17:00, to catch our flight out at 19:10. But, as I told you on day 5 - Iberia screwed us again, and we had to leave our hotel at 12:00, so basically the whole day was shot. We wanted to make the best of it anyway, and enjoy the atmosphere and smells till the last second. So, we made an early start, to see the sights that we had not seen on Friday (remember? we went into the Souks and almost never left?) - so that meant the Saadian Tombs, El Bahia palace, and Palais Dar Si Said. We left the Riad, and looked for a taxi, but there were none to be had. Now, do you ... read more

Day 3 - and we had planned to go to the souk for just a couple of hours, HA HA HA. So, we started off a bit later than planned, since we were just dead from the previous day. Two of our party wanted to buy leather jackets, so our first stop was a leather goods factory about 1 minute walk from our Riad. As I've said before, there was 6 of us, and we ordered 11 items of clothing - mostly jackets and skirts !!! Now, it was Friday 11:00 when we finally left the factory, they don't work on Sundays, and on Monday at 12:00, they were all ready, even after last minute adjustments. The prices were more than reasonable (590 Euro for 2 jackets and a suede skirt), we got exactly what we ... read more

At 4am Boxing Day, in the dark, cold, and quiet morning. I made my way to the airport, and flew out of London to Marrakesh (or Marrakech) in Morocco, with my housemate. It was only a 2 hour flight, but I had landed on another contenant. The ‘Red City’ at the base of the Atlas Mountains. The Muslim, Arabic speaking city had a huge French influence and almost everyone who tried to speak to me, presumed I was French too. The taxi driver who took me to the hotel was a little adventurous to say the least. He was keen on playing 'chicken' with oncoming traffic. All in all, the people were very welcoming, however, they insisted that they follow me along the street as I went sightseeing, just in case I needed directions which they ... read more

How busy and lively is Marrakech! The new part of the city has well planed streets, gardens and monumental buildings. In the old medina the traffic is as chaotic as it gets with locals and tourists negotiating narrow roads with bicycles, cars, scooters sounding their horns at all times plus stalls, street vendors and snake charmers competing to draw people's attention! In the evenings the air in the main square is filled with steam and all sorts of frying and cooking smells as the food stalls get really busy. I saw a man washing dishes in a barrel the first night and promised myself I would not eat there, but I did not resist the tempting smell of fried squids and aubergines the second night. The food was delicious! I wondered on my own for a ... read more
