Today was a very relaxing. It was a beautiful sunny day and I had a chance to walk into town with andrew ad get some supplies and produce for lunch and dinner. the open Market in Karatina is massive!! The produce they offer is countless and so fresh and looks so delicious!! The walk back and fort from town is amazing, very fresh and so relaxing. Lunch today consisted of sukuma wiki ( braised spinach) and rice with beans. The rest of the afternoon was peaceful and I got a chance to read through my lonely planet book and decide where I would like to visit while I am here. Because I have Saturdays and Sundays off from volunteering I think that next weekend I will arrange with Jacky to go to a national park for ... read more

Good news!! We didn't have to take public transport today because a member of the kvcdp staff was able to drive Jacky and I to Karatina. Thank goodness as well because, based on the vehicles that I saw on the roads today, I definitely would have been put in a jam packed matatu!!! As i mentioned earlier these matatus are insane. The traffic is really bad in nairobi and i dont think that the matatu drivers make it much better. The seem to be no real rules of the road in nairobi. Tired of wait? No problem, simply take your car across the barrier or just off road it for a bit to pass the traffic. Is the car in front of you too slow? Tha's fine, just drive up on the sidewalk for a bit. ... read more

Slept in this morning, then off to Nanyuki Spinners and Weavers, where a short tour showed the whole process from raw wool to woven product. The women work very hard so it was a pleasure to buy from them. There is an elementary school as well as girls secondary school adjacent. On the way back to the hotel we visited a Benedictine monastery where they hold weekend retreats for young people. Brother Andrew showed us around. It was meager but felt very spiritual. He explained the work they do there, hosting groups of children and travelers from afar for African Bible study and personal reflection. After lunch some of the group went to visit a former actress, Donna Peabody, formerly married to William Hurt. Carol said she seemed lonely living here in Africa by herself. After ... read more

Mt. Kenya Safari Club has a grand past. Today we went to Ol Pejeta, which means fresh green grass. Inside the park was the Sweetwaters chipanzee sanctuary, funded by the Jane Goodall Institute. I am starting her autobiography tonight, it helps to know more about her work, then to see it in action. We walked the wooded grounds, it was very jungle-like. We learned from our guide that there are 41 chimps on two sides of the Nanyuki River. Chimpanzees don't swim so the factions from different parts of Africa will not intermix. There would be much violence if they ever did get together. We watched many of them and their actions are very human-like. I could have stayed longer, but there was more to see. Giraffe, impala, and finally rhinos, white rhino, which first was ... read more

Well there was no hiding the fact that the world cup had started in Nairobi on Friday night...... loud music was booming and people were cheering but we had an early night in preparation for our big climb the next day. We drove off to the base of mount kenya, making a stop via our drivers' family where we were given fresh fruit and the mzungu were photographed! The roads were great - no potholes and our driver had a dvd player in his car so we got to watch cheesy kenyan music videos. The base of the mountain is at the equator so we did the water experiment and it's true! - the water goes different directions down the plughole merely 20m either side of the equator and straight down when on it. The first ... read more

Today we rose early in the morning once again but this time it was to something beautiful. It was snowing outside and a white beautiful blanket had already covered the ground. This was the first time in my life that I had every since snow and this showed me the diversity and beauty of Kenya's landscape and Mt.Kenya has shown me many different types of animals the farther we have gone up it, the more diverse amount of animals we began to see. Today's trekk was probably the most dangerous, difficult, tiring, and challenging hike yet. We started to hike and we saw large hills that were covered in unstable little pebbles. We hiked up these paths and we had to watch our every step. Even while doing this the path we had to take was ... read more

Today we were woken up at four in the morning. I was not exactly happy or excited about being woken up this early but we had to if we wanted to get off this mountain in time to keep the schedule on track. We all got up heavy headed and sat down and tried to drink a cup of tea. We all suited up for the harsh cold elements outside and started our trek to the summit. After twenty minutes of walking, I felt weak and I started to throw up. It turns out I had altitude sickness but I pushed on even though I felt like I was about to collapse from exhaustion. Some of us became so tired and honestly, I thought I was going to snap from craziness from being sick and overly ... read more

I suddenly woke up in shock of a dream I just had. I had dreamt someone had just poured a bucket of water over my head. It had all seemed so real until I realized I was actually drenched in water from torso to my legs and I was freezing cold and shivered in pain of the cold. Unfortunately I later realized there was a very small opening from my side of the tent door and it was snowing so the snow probably got onto me and melted on my warm body so that had explained why I was shivering cold. I couldnt sleep from then so I changed out of my wet thermals and got dressed so I went inside the hut to see if I could get something to eat. After we all had ... read more

We rose in the early morn yet again and as I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes I realizied the air was thinner and the air was colder. I relaizied that we were getting closer and closer to the top of the mountain. We left the noisy Med. Station with high hopes of getting to the top of Mt.Kenya. We walked through more dense forest like scenery and we did this for several hours or more. We saw manymany types of animals like Water buffalos, monkeys, and we some more elephant tracks. The forest of Mt.Kenya was beautiful, so many plants and trees, all so full of life. Everything was beautiful, even the view of the actual mountain was pretty nice too. When we came across the swamp area that was tricky to get through ... read more

We all have especially anticipated this moment in the Kenya expedition. The physical challenge of the trip which afterwards had changed me as a person and is one adventure that I made through and probably will remember for the rest of my life. It was dreadfully painful yet amazing. We prepared our travel packs and days sacks and headed out on the buses with Tom and his partner driver, Kamal. We made a few stops along the way for groceries, bathroom breaks, buying coke, and my bus broke down at one point so we had to stop at a gas station to get the engine sprayed with a special liquid so that the bus wouldnt burst into flames. Soon after a "wonderful" six hour trip we finally made it to the blue line hotel which was ... read more
