Today was the beginning of what would soon become a long journey. One that would take us miles across a mountain until we reached its frost bitten peak. We went to the entrance of Mt.Kenya and stood there and paid off the entrance fees for each challenger. We all stood there and were introduced to our mountain guides: Charles, Isac, and Robert. We all loaded up our supplies and got into the jeeps and entered the mountain. We drove across the gentle valleys and it was like looking at an evergreen heaven. The plain was vast and we drove until we reached the forest. We were driving through an open orange paved pathway and we were driven to the half way mark to the Med.Station. We were dropped off and we began the rest of the ... read more

Mt. Kenya The main reason I went over to Kenya after the studies in Tanzania, was to hook up with Lars, a friend from Norway, and do some climbing at Mt. Kenya. We arrived Nairobi on tuesday 2nd of march, and planned for 12 days in the mountain. A norwegian contact we got in Nairobi helped us out to arrange some practical stuff, and we headed up towards the mountain on thursday. When we arrived McKinders camp at 4200 metres above sea level, Lars got serious headache and it simply wouldn't stop. So after just a couple of days in the mountain we had to turn back down! To bad, because the climbing looked really nice, but it's nothing else to do with altitude sickness than getting down. Before we went to the mountains we booked ... read more

After spending 10 days in Tanzania enjoying a wonderful trek up Mount Kilimanjaro on the Machame Route and ending my stay in this lovely country with some great safari in Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara National Park, it was time for some more mountain adventures in Kenya. The bus-ride from Moshi to Nairobi was supposed to take 6 hours according to the books, but it took me more than 9 bumpy hours before I finally arrived in the capital. I had been given a lot of warnings about this supposedly crime-hit city before I came here so I decided to be a little bit more careful and use a lot of common sense when walking in the streets downtown. On my descent from Mt.Kenya I actually met a couple who had been badly mugged by ... read more

Given that Mount Kenya lies only 10 miles from the equator, it is somewhat surprising that its jagged peaks are littered with glaciers. At 5199m it was once Africa’s highest point, that is until Kilimanjaro erupted onto the scene. Despite what it lacks in height, it is still considered by some to provide a more challenging, rewarding (and indisputably cheaper) alternative to the more popular choice of climbing Kilimanjaro. The highest two peaks of Mount Kenya, are only accessible to those with technical climbing equipment and expertise. Fortunately, the third highest peak, Point Lenana (4985m) has no such requirements and is the goal of most mortals, ourselves included. Our intention was to make our way to one of the towns which provide a gateway to the mountain and organise permits and the required support from there. ... read more

We leave for Nairobi today...it is another beautiful day here: sunny, warm, but with a bit of morning coolness in the fresh mountain air... I could see Mt Kenya as I ran this morning, and the farms and field were bright with dew. On the way back, I came across a group of young teens by the road....they called out to me and I went over. After the usual greetings of good morning, and handshakes, the brave one made several jokes at my expense, and then asked for 10 shillings...I showed, to more laughter, that I had nothing on me and then he asked for my "googles" (sunglasses)...or my Thatuna Rest Home hat...Again, to laughter, I explained that I have light eyes, not African eyes, and needed them in the sun... And then when I took ... read more

Vicki and I were treated to a night at Mountain Lodge, on the flanks of Mt Kenya, as a thank you from the school to Vicki for all her hard work here. We were driven up to the Lodge by an employee of the school on Saturday afternoon. We drove on a beautifully paved road, after we turned off at the village of Chaka. I t is well paved since the president has a vacation home on the road! It was strange to have no potholes to bump over on the whole trip. Mountain Lodge is about a 30 minute drive up Mt Kenya from the school. We passed through farmland, across small rivers and then through a village, where there were very primitive looking wood buildings along the road. The driver told us that these ... read more

When I knew I had a chance to come to Kenya, I was excited to see an African country (I don't count Morroco as truly African)...and of course to experience close up the mythological animals of my childhood: lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras. I was eager to learn a new culture and language. What I didn't expect was to feel such a strong attraction to the country itself, one that was evident the instant I arrived in the Highlands...It is really hard to describe what attractas me so much to this part of the world....there is the physical beauty of the hills, mountains, and plains, and the gentle kindness of the people..but somehow that doesn't come near the deep connection I feel with his land... I have talked to other westerners about this...maybe it's the fact that ... read more

There is something interesting and sometimes hard about living in place where you are the "different" one. I cannot be anonymous or "invisible" once outside my room. Whether I'm out running on the road at 7:00 am or walking to the little stands down the road to buy vegetables, or in town shopping, I am not just me, going along with my life, but someone noticebly different....someone that makes others "take note". This morning I ran down to the river, about two miles along a beautiful curving road that follows the edge of the valley. I was a little later than usual, and lots of people were walking to their fields or jobs. Lots of being noticed...although many runners come from this part of world, so running isn't unusual in itself. A matatu passed me on ... read more

I have been back at Mt Kenya Academy since Friday afternoon. I spent the night in Nairobi after returning from safari. The hotel where I stayed was minimal, but clean and quiet. However the restaurant was like something out of Starwars, only with Earthlings. There were all kinds of deals going down between people from all over! Much business of all kinds... a younger European woman and an older European man were both speaking English with different accents and talking about problems all over Africa and work being done. A white man was leaving with an African woman and his arm was around her (PDA's are not normal here). An Arab man with a laptop was running figures by two Africans with cell phones....they were dealing in something that came in kilos. The next day, Simon ... read more
