Wow, where to start… So I made it to Ghana, and I still can’t quite make myself believe that I’m here. This place is in some ways horrifying, yet Ghana is always, always indescribably beautiful. I guess I shall start from the beginning. My trip here was so incredibly long, by the end of it, I could not even keep my eyes open or my head up long enough to tell the flight attendant if I wanted coke or apple juice. I don’t think I have even been that completely exhausted in my entire life. But I made it and that, to me, is what counts - no matter how tired (and grumpy) I was. My last leg of the flight was from Amsterdam to Accra and after being stuck in Amsterdam for an extra 5 ... read more

First off... wow, thank you so much for the messages!! I was getting really annoyed because I couldnt get on the internet for the longest time and then I got on and found all these amazing messages that made my day!! You guys rock just for the record. I am still trying to figure out if I can reply to each mesage individually or if I will have to just email you. Hopefully I can do it here because these computers dont seem to like yahoo mail very much. and mom, the lilly comment was for girl casey, not boy casey just for clarification. My only request if any one sends me care packages is to include pictures and there is a madatory Little Debbie snack requirement to get through customs. I dont know why, but ... read more

Hey!! Looks like I lucked out today, the internet is running pretty fast! So why not do a few updates before my classes get underway right? So, for the last few days of orientation we spent outside of the campus, much to my enjoyment! One of the major factors that went into my decision to study abroad was the environment of not just the school but the area surrounding it; I wanted something completely different. In essence, I was looking for something big. And I definitely got what I wanted! The hamlet known as Emporia and the small town of Manhattan got nothin' on the Capitol city of Accra. Hopefully by the time I'm done, I can give you all a small slice of the enormous Ghanaian super pie I've just been served. Our adventures started ... read more

Today we went on an Accra city tour where it was nice to actually get out and see the town. I saw just a little bit last night. I already said in my last post that they were taking us out and i am really glad I went. Champs was having karoke night and that turned into quite an entertaining evening. I encouraged everyone to go ahead and get up and sing so we had a group of girls (and one guy) sing "My Humps" and then Fergalicious... yes, it was incredible. Followed up by other people from our group singing Marvin Gaye's Sexual Healing. We sang a few more songs and it was a really great night. I think watching 2 African men sing Wonderwall while their friend did an interpretive African dance is probably ... read more

Sorry it has taken so long to update! We ahve been VERY busy with orientation during the day and internet is very difficult to find at night when we have free time so I haven't been able to get on here yet. Wow... Where do I even begin? First, it is a very good thing I came with no expectations because it definately would not be what I expected. We got here late sunday night after 30 hours of traveling and that was an experience! We walked into the hostel (dorm) and it was very welcoming. When you walk through the lobby you enter into a courtyard and the dorm is like a quad around the courtyard with 4 floors. The doors to your room open up into the courtyard, very similar to a motel. The ... read more

Wow...I'm in Ghana. It still hasn't fully set in just yet! Okay, so I have about a 20 stories to tell and I've only been gone for four days. Unfortunately this is my third try at this, because the internet here is not just slow and limited, but it's also a little fickle too. I'm also on the clock right now so I'm going to have to make this short. I promise that my next blog will be much longer, more detail, less scatter brained with the possibility of some pictures and maybe even a video. Alright so, flights went really well, got through security no problem, no turbulence or cancellations, in fact everything was really smooth...until I got to JFK. So what was originally supposed to be a three hour layover turned into eight hours. ... read more

This has been quite the adventure and this entry is just going to go over some of the things that I will miss about being in Ghana, some things I’ve learned, and some things I have come to appreciate about my own home country. I will not make this too long because there is so much that I have come to learn, but I would like to highlight some things. I’m sure I will realize even more when I return to the states. I realized a few weeks ago while I was on a tro-tro that I really do know the system here… well, I can manage on my own. I can get my own tro-tros and I know how much the mate (the guy that hangs out the window of the vehicle and shouts where ... read more

I can't believe my computer just restarted. I had a wonderful, very long update written. And I thought I was all set since travelblog.org auto-saves as you go along. But alas, my whole looong update was just lost. Hmph. Okay, here's the gist. (Updated at of November 12th so that the "gist" has become a fleshed out essay.) :-) Election night was awesome. I stayed up all night at an event off campus (hosted by New York University's study abroad program here- their only one in Africa; isn't that kind of sad?). We watched CNN (they kept saying we'd switch over to BBC and AlJezhira but they never actually did which was a little disappointing) and finally got to see Obama's acceptance speech on a larger-than-life screen at 5:30am. I thought it was pretty funny that ... read more

It's a normal, busy week over here. I somehow manage to stay up too late every night, so I'm always sleepy- but that's nothing new. I'm off to Joshua's in a few minutes, but I thought I'd write a quick update first. Sunday was very quiet. I just hung out with USAC friends and ate and read and laid around. Monday was simple but really nice. I got up early, photocopied my ballot (so I have a copy of my vote for Obama), went to the airport post office, and submitted my vote. I was very excited about it. And it was fun finding my way to the post office and making people laugh every time I said "thank you" in Twi. I came back to campus, had lunch, and went to Joshua's. Joshua's dad is ... read more

Today is a very quiet, warm, sleepy Sunday. I'm borrowing Rachel's computer, lying on Sammy's bed, and watching "Sunshine" with Eric and Rachel. Rachel and I made veggie burgers with guacamole for lunch using fresh veggies from the night market. It was amazing. Now I'm very full and very sleepy once again. I left off last time just in time to grab my things and go to class. But then the lecturer was a no-show, so I spent the afternoon making redred for the first time. It came out pretty well and was fairly inexpensive for the quantity it made. I spent the evening eating and hanging out with friends (Daniel, Kristin, Eric, Sammy, Rachel, etc.). Wednesday was early morning Twi. Only half of us showed up so we went over our tests and talked. Then ... read more
