I can't believe it's already been a week since last I wrote! It's starting to feel like a normal semester in that time is somehow just flying by. I'm definitely getting into some routines (class, Josh, etc.), so that's part of it. Plus, I've been getting some more homework assignments and things. I had my first history test yesterday (not hard but not what I expected so I don't know how I did). I went into school Anna mode for about 24hrs and just studied and needed my space and chewed my lip. But then last night after the test I did my reading for Qur'anic Studies and made some amazing pasta with cabbage and cheese for dinner at like 9pm. To top it all off, I played Jungle Speed until midnight with friends (American, of ... read more

I had my first Twi test this morning. The professor is a little crazy and made me a bit nervous about format (he got all upset with Mike for not formatting responses like we were taught to on the homework but the directions on the test didn't say anything about that format so I did the same thing as Mike and just wrote out the answers without rewriting all the questions- our professor is a little nuts but maybe we're just not familiar with the system) so that was annoying but not a big deal. I think I did well. Meresua Twi seesei. (I am learning Twi now.) Yesterday afternoon was awesome. I went to Joshua's and got more eye contact than I EVER have before from him. I don't know if he was just having ... read more

Dear All, I seem to have accidentally started two blogs, one with travelblog.org and one with travelblog.com. Let's just say that doing anything on the internet here can take a while so you stop and start and forget which e-mails actually went through and which ones never sent. This is the entry I wrote yesterday but posted to travelblog.com rather than here. Enjoy! It's Monday morning and I'm getting back into the swing of things after a lazy weekend. It is getting HOT. The past two months have been more like a Massachusetts summer (warm but only really bad in the direct sun with a nice breeze the majority of the time) but the past few days have been really warm. We haven't been feeling very motivated as a result. Yesterday four of us USAC folks ... read more

Sigh, not much to report because today is the first day I have stepped outside my hostel since 6:30 Friday morning because I have been sick, of all things with a throat infection, how exotic I know. However, it had my fever up to 103 for a few days and the rest of me in too much pain to sleep much...so basically the last few days have been wretched. However, some good points remain: 1. I am getting better! 2. My mom, Perry, and dad succeeded in almost making me feel as if they were there to take care of me with their faithful phone calls and reassuring voices (THANK YOU!) 3. My friends here were wonderful bringing me water and juice, food when I could finally eat again, AND a lap top and bootlegged season ... read more

Hello All! I'm sorry I've been neglecting to update everyone. As you may have figured out, the internet on campus is often very slow so internet is still a great means of getting in touch with me for free but ti takes me a while. Let's see... I'll just start with a really brief recap of the past six weeks and then the next time I write I'll pick up with more specifics. Basically, I'm living in a great little international bubble on campus called the International Students Hostel (ISH). There are 10 people in the group that I came with (University Studies Abroad Consortium- USAC) and we've been sticking together a lot. They're all really cool and we've been exploring and hanging out together. I've done some traveling. The 10 of us went to Kumasi ... read more

Ok, first things first: Will someone tell Nanny that when I was showing off pictures of my lovely family, friends and boyfriend to one of my new friends here he said, “Oh, that is your grandma? She looks like she is 45.” A couple of nights ago I went salsa dancing, haha. Who would have thought? And, there are, in my inexperienced opinion, some very talented salsa dancers here in Accra. Although, the fact that I would have been unable to recognize the salsa before that evening may make me unqualified to make such a statement. Either way, salsa dancing takes place every Wednesday outside of a hotel around Accra, so perhaps by the time I reenter Pittsburgh I will have found my rhythm. We ended up getting to the hotel right after the lessons had ... read more

Well, how have I already been in Ghana for 5 weeks?? These last two weeks have just flown by. Incredible. I am finally content with the food, and am starting to actually look forward to my bowl of beans and cassava, or rice, or plantains. I have ridden my first seven tro-tros, and succeeded in buying food out of one of their windows as the driver sits in traffic, things here are actually starting to feel normal. This weekend a group of five of us took tro-tros to the beach. We go to the tro tro station, about a 15 minute walk from our hostel, where we hit a lot of traffic, and a lot of tro tros. This is what I know about the system so far: 1. A tro tro driver owns his tro ... read more

Well hello again. The weather here has been wonderful the last couple of days, and while I am still having slight head issues, I have finally been able to really enjoy the last few days here, and for that I am so thankfullllll. In fact, I have had lots of thankful, joyful moments lately; yesterday I was sitting out on my balcony, reading a book and watching the clouds rush past the already visible moon as afternoon was fading, and I had one of those, “Oh my goodness I am in Ghana, I can’t believe it” moments. I am done with classes for the week and plan to go to the beach for a day this weekend and use another day to explore Accra. Tonight, there is a possibility I may go salsa dancing, so that ... read more

We did not go on our 4 day trip this past weekend. The bus we were going to take ended up breaking down so we had to reschedule the trip for the third weekend in October. The past few days have been filled with soccer, kids, and beaches. Thursday I finally got to go to the Peace and Love orphanage. We (my roommate and this girl I met also studying abroad) took the tro-tro to the orphanage. I'm getting more comfortable with the tro-tros but it's still very new. They let us out and we followed the signs to the orphanage. Once we arrived we walked into the gates (which one of the children opened for us) and spoke to this girl from Germany who was in charge at the time. Basically, there are no set ... read more

Exactly! Wow what a course! It was worth every penny, and effort we put into it. Claudia Bohner a German, is an awesome instructor. So awesome I brought her home to our village of Fenaso! I’ve taken her so far from home that she doesn’t know how to get back … I may not let her go back (smile). In all sincerity our course was very intense. Our mornings were full of lectures, philosophy, the basics of early child development and practical application. In addition to learning 30 new songs! In the afternoons we used carpentry and other skills in order to make our own child development equipment from locally acquired materials. The training we received let me know that I am in fact on the right track with our students. Education is, or should be, ... read more
