Hello! Well today was a beautiful sunny day, and it is transitioning into a beautiful evening. I woke up with my first mosquito bite today! I guess I couldn't expect to stay bite free the entire 18 weeks... Let's see...yesterday's classes were pretty wonderful. I had dance again at 7:30 am and again today at 11:30. I honestly love love love that class. I would never take a dance class at home because I would be self-conscious that I had my dad's rhythm haha! But here I am already out of my comfort zone so it is an extra challenge! In the morning when we get there everyone's name is called (over 100 names) for attendance, and the song from Chariots of Fire is usually playing haha. The class is for underclassmen who want to major ... read more

Yes, so there are usually a lot of rumors that fly around this campus and one which we heard last week was that Ghana was going to shut off the water to this region for 10 days. I thought it was not true, because that sounds absolutely absurd... turns out it's legit. Let me explain. First, our ISEP leader, Theresa had warned us that sometimes the water gets turned off for a day or two so we needed to buy buckets. I bought mine, 2 cedis. There are two spickets outside that apparently are hooked up to some other water source and we will be able to access water from there to fill our buckets for showers, etc. Well, last night she told us that we will be without running water for 10 days. Ghana is ... read more

I uploaded some pictures to my previous entry. It took sometime that is why I only uploaded a few. Plus, I haven't been acting touristy enough, so I only have but so many pictures. We had orientation that the University put on for all the new International students. We make up about 4% of the 30,000 students here. Their goal is to get to 10%. We sat through about 3 hours of different people talking to us. All were very welcoming to Ghana and to the University. We had heard a lot of what they were talking about in a previous orientation which ISEP had for us. They basically went over local customs and dos and don'ts. I don't think I mentioned this, but in Ghana it is considered very rude to do anything with your ... read more

I had been feeling a bit overwhelmed yesterday. I went around campus for the first time by myself and it wasn't so good. I'm used to sticking out in certain places, but here, it is very apparent. Normally, I do not have a problem with it, but yesterday I was just so tired of all the looks that it really kind of upset me. I need to give you some background information on how registration works here. The first couple days we were here we went around to just register for the university. We had to go to different departments and wait in lines to get the right paper work filled in and get our IDs ready. There is no online registration for classes, instead you walk around to each department you want to take a ... read more

There have been quite a number of adventures I have embarked on the past few days. I've learned a lot and made a fool out of myself all the while. The Ghanaian transit system is interesting. I had mentioned before about no real traffic laws, and yet, I don't think there are that many car accidents. There are a couple of forms of public transportation: tro-tros, taxis, and buses. Tro-tros are like big 15 passanger vans that everyone crams into. There are stops along the roads and one guy hangs out the window and shouts where they are going. If you are going that way you hop in and pay. It's very cheap- today for example we went to this market in Madina and it costs a total of 50 pesewas round trip- 25 there and ... read more

Sorry it has taken so long to update this blog. It has been difficult to connect to the internet, and when I first did it was timed and it moved VERY VERY SLOWLY. PAINFULLY SLOW. I left DC around 11. The flight was about 30 minutes late but we got to London 10 min early. I had a whole row to myself but I did not get to sleep at all. I arrived in Heathrow and I was too exhausted to walk around the airport so I sat and read for my 4 hour layover. I went to the right gate and got to Ghana in one piece. Stepping off the plane was weird. First, I had heard that it was very humid here... and that was no lie. The mugginess greeted me the second I ... read more

Hello!!!!!!! Well, what can I say????(Important:...on Thursday I should be able to buy a phone card or phone, and can finally make calls to my parents and perry! and from then on I will be able to have much more regular contact. The internet is painfully slow, but I have found an internet cafe within walking distance, and I will be updating again tomorrow...we have a scheduled dinner in a few minutes, so sadly I can not properly narrate my arrival into Ghana until tomorrow. But, honestly, I could have cried getting off the plane in the dark, out of homesickness, out of finally getting to this moment, out of confusion, etc.. But, today I woke up refreshed, almost over the jet lag, and the sun was finally shining on me in Ghana, so I was ... read more

Hi Everyone, I cannot believe that I am leaving Ghana tomorrow night. I've finished my exams and more and more people from my program are leaving everyday. My first housemate left on Thursday morning, my roommate left on Friday morning and all but four of us are leaving tonight. It is so difficult for me to say goodbye to all the close friends I've made and it will be hard to adjust to life without them. It will be sad not to have Brendan walking around shirtless, Lizzy experimenting with food in the kitchen, Suni and Pete bantering, Natalie asking advice for what she should eat, Megan preaching about everything that's wrong with the U.S., Jessie complaining about all the Ghanaian guys that want to marry her, and Stephanie doing her best Ghanaian impressions. But I'm ... read more

Well this is it. My last blog entry… which means alas, that this incredible, surreal stay in Africa has come to an end. Since my last blog I have experienced some incredible things. My parents came to visit- their stay consisted of another trip out to Cape Coast slave trade castle, Kakum canopy walk, Cape Coast Beach, the African art museum, flight up north to Mole National Park, an incredible stay in the reserve in which monkeys jumped on top of and around the breakfast tables while people were eating, wild warthogs sleeping under the trees right outside our room, elephant tracking and following their footprints right up to a huge water hole where 14 elephants were spraying and dunking each other underwater like a group of 10 year old boys in a pool (in slow ... read more

So, as you probably know, my parents came to visit a few weeks ago. Since they've been home, my mom wrote down a few thoughts she wanted to share, so I let her post them here on my blog. I plan to post a blog of my own soon, it's just been a little hectic lately studying for finals... well that... and just being lazy lol. alright well i hope all is well with everyone back in the States! love and miss you all! =p Mom's thoughts: Okay, we are back from our visit to Ghana and I have a few thoughts Lauren is allowing me to share on her blog. First of all, who is that girl over there and what did she do with my daughter? The girl we were with is wise and ... read more
