Thursday 29th July Originally I had hoped to do some teaching in a state school again in Ghana as I did in Nepal last summer. I had a contact at a school not far from the Childrens' Home where we delivered the shoes last week but when I went to visit the school at the end of last week I discovered that most schools in Accra (and presumably the whole of Ghana) were either in the middle of their national exams, or had just completed them and would be finishing for the annual holidays last week or this week. This was dissappointing but there was still the possibility of doing something useful at the Childrens' Home. Kids from the home do not start to attend a state school outside the home until they are about 7 ... read more

(BOOP. This is a test to see if my blog is working, this is only a test. BOOP) haha Hi everyone! I just thought I'd do a test blog just to make sure everything is up and working before I leave. My trip is less than 2 weeks away and I can hardly believe summer has gone by so fast! There is so much to do to prepare and not a lot of time to do it. Right now I am beginning to pack up a few things and making sure I am ready to leave on the 9th. I'm going to try to post a blog every week in Accra and hopefully you can follow me on all my adventures. Thanks for reading! -Nina D. ... read more

So much has happened in the last couple of weeks. In case you’re curious… Work, work, work. I went to a forum for women’s rights at the Institute for Economic Affairs last week. While it lasted a few too many hours, I could tell how important it was to a lot of women, so I really did enjoy it. One thing I have noticed is people’s inability to turn off their cell phones during public events. Every few minutes the women’s forum was rocking out to someone else’s ringtone. And it happened, again, and again, and again… You would think we could learn. About a week ago I also attended an event at the business school on the University of Ghana campus. For Pete’s sake, don’t write 8 am on the invitation if you really mean ... read more

Wednesday 21st July We decided to take today out as a sightseeing day so off after a lazy morning towards the harbour area of Accra in a district called Jonestown. We first needed to take a trotro to one of the main central bus stations called Tema Station. Although ostensibly a bus station, Tema Station could easily be mistaken for a market. On all the bus stands there are market traders, more around the edges, and then there are the ones simply walking around carrying what they are selling in their arms, or, more commonly on top of their heads. the head carrying is done mainly by the women but a number of men do it as well. whata do they carry on their heads? almost anything. common items include the 500ml "pure water" sachets which ... read more

Tuesday 20th July 2010 On Monday lunchtime I got my first view of the waves breaking on the Altlantic shore near Accra - we had lunch in a little beacj restaurant just yards from the sea. On Monday evening we strolled around the Newtown area where we are staying to look for somewhere to eat. By now it was dark but the streets were just as lively as during the daytime. We eventually settled on a small fast food servery next to a TV shop. We sat at a plastic garden table whilst next door a group of locals watched TVs at the TV shop. I say TVs in the plural because there were 3 different sets on, all showing different programs - one of them was still covered in clingfilm Our first two nights were ... read more

It's 11:00am here in Accra (1 hour before UK I believe) Dorothy and I are now sitting in an Internet cafe in the OSU district. We finally got to bed about 2 o'clock this morning so it was a long day yesterday. The flight from Gatwick was delayed about 2 and a half hours. This had one benefit in that we didn't have to try and kill 3 hours in the transit lounge at Tripoli, only about half an hour. Both flights were fine (apart from being late) - I managed to watch Avatar on the second one which I hadn't seen yet. In-flight meals were OK. The main problem was the time it took for the baggage to arrive on the carousel - we spent about an hour waiting for all 4 bags to finally ... read more

First of all, apologies dear readers for the extremely brief contents of the previous posting. I also apologise for the fact that it was, like this one, posted from the UK. This disappointed some of my readers (not mentioning any names). So, this will be the last one before I go, but I thought a bit of background might be helpful. Last summer my daughter Dorothy spent 3 months volunteering at the Osu Childrens' Home in Accra. You can read her blog on here (just search for 'Dorothy' and 'Ghana'). She loved Ghana so much that she wanted to go back again this summer. Since I had enjoyed my first volunteering experience last summer, she suggested we went to Ghana together this summer. She hopes to go back into the orphanage and I will look for ... read more

Wow, it’s been a while. Where do I start? I guess football once again takes center stage. First of all, the USA vs. Ghana game was wild, as you can imagine. I took a lot of heat every time I clapped for the US, whether intentionally or out of habit. Although at first it was hard to grasp that we lost, once I put my pride aside, it was much more fun to be with such happy people during and after the game. Like always, a dance party on every street corner ensued after the win. All the street sellers were grouped in celebration everywhere you turned. I watched the game at Champ’s Sports Bar in Accra and I loved it. There were about 75 nationalities in one room and the excitement was so catching. The ... read more
