So Tuesday June 22 I did my entry before I went to talk with some local Ghanian students. We asked them questions and it was really interesting to see how they viewed the U.S. and of the issues in Ghana. Anyway, on Wednesday (23) we got to go to a carving village and shop around. The people selling things here are so aggressive with tourists, they all say "I will give you good price" or "I will give you a student price" and somewhat make you feel bad if you don't follow them into their store to make a purchase. It was an experience for sure, but I ended up buying some neat wood carvings. After that we went to the Ashanti Kingdom and two museums. Thursday June 24: Left Kumasi to head to Elmina that ... read more

First order of business: Ghana vs. USA. I’m quite positive Saturday will be a day to remember. I watched the USA vs. Algeria game yesterday in my hostel and the victory was so sweet I could taste it. Sometimes football can be so so beautiful. Landon Donovan is an America hero. :) I also watched the Ghana vs. Germany game in Osu yesterday. It’s hard to even begin to describe how crazy this country was yesterday after the game, with the knowledge that Ghana will move forward. We again ventured down Oxford Street and were engulfed in the excitement. We grabbed a table (miraculously, but then again no one was sitting, everyone was dancing) and settled in to watch the craziness. Just picture about 600 people dancing like hooligans in the streets. Then, picture a downpour. ... read more

So I have been very slow at posting due to lack of Internet, and I apologize for that so let me catch you up on what I have been doing for the past week! Saturday June 12: Ghana I woke up early that morning to get ready to spend the day with a Ghanaian family and see what they do on a daily basis. Gennelle and I were assigned to a family - Gabbi, Cassandra, and Lois! I actually met Gabbi the second day I was in Ghana; he was my tour guide for the transportation in Ghana. He is a graduate from grad school at the University of Ghana and now helps with the NCSU/UNC study abroad programs at the university and is still doing research there. His sisters Cassandra (19 years old) and Lois ... read more

Accra is in a frenzy. There is nothing like a game of football to bring a country together. World Cup craziness has taken over and it seems like you’d be hard pressed to find a car on the road that doesn’t have a Ghanaian flag proudly hung on the windows, hung out of the trunk, hung on the rear-view mirror, being waved out the window... Ghana played Serbia yesterday afternoon and became the first African team to win a match during the first African hosted World Cup. To say everyone was excited is perhaps the understatement of the year. I watched the game in Osu and I don’t think there was any other place I would’ve rather been. There were big screens in the middle of the road and thousands of people watching, chanting and dancing. ... read more

Writing a story is like piecing together a puzzle. Every time I come back to the office after chasing down a program or event, I sit down, and start putting together the puzzle. I love it. This last week I was assigned to go to the British Council Hall in Accra for the inauguration of an information forum for the Ghana Integrity Initiative. On the same day, I was also assigned to go to the closing ceremony of an MTN promotion (largest mobile network in Ghana). The ceremony was supposed to start at 3:30, but this is Ghana, and it didn’t start until 4:30. I ended up having to accept an award on behalf of the Chronicle, which I was not expecting. In all the photos that were taken of me, my eyes are huge and ... read more

By Douglas Akwasi Owusu A key factor in developing nations is its ability to bridge the gap between policy and implementation through the use of creative and imaginative skills. A project begins with a dream, idea or vision followed by technical considerations and finally physical development. The links between these broad areas become the catalyst for tackling the socio-economic agenda. Over the years Ghana has produced shining examples of local and international talents in various fields. Today we are still struggling to harmonize and utilize their expertise towards national development. That is why it has become very necessary and vital for us to take a closer look at the dreams, designs and projects of a Ghanaian visionary. This Visionary is little known in his own country but has achieved so much at the international level. Some ... read more

It only took me going through the ordeal of waiting in insanely long security lines and trying desperately, along with everyone else headed from Amsterdam to Accra, to shove my carry-on into an impossibly full overhead bin for me to be reminded that patience is indeed a virtue. It is going to take me some time get used to the pace here again. I knew I was back in Ghana the minute I touched down in Accra and every person on the plane erupted into claps and cheers. Was it a rough flight? Not at all. What it was though, was a flight bringing us all home. What’s not to clap about? This is the first summer of my life that I will not spend in Alaska. It’s a strange thing to think about - it’s ... read more

Just finished a three-week overland trip through West Africa with my travel buddies, Accra to Abidjan overland via Timbuktu. We'd been planning this trip now for several years before finally getting our schedules synced. We would start out in Accra, head east via Lome to Cotonou, then up north through Benin to Pendjari Park before transiting Burkina Faso to Mali. After visiting Mopti, the Dogon Country and Timbuktu, we would head back south through Burkina Faso to Ghana again, down to the coast and head west, ending our trip in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire. Travel in West Africa can be challenging; just getting there can be difficult due to limited flight schedules and routings, then there are other issues such as costly visas and immunizations to worry about. Two of us were able to use our Delta ... read more

Hey all, i'm writing my first travel from room 212 of the Airside hotel in Accra having only just discovered, despite thoroughly reading the hotels in-room info, that there is free wireless interweb! So here's our brief story up to now (this seems almost pointless as we've only been the country 24 hours - but hey). After 18 hours of traveling from Birmingham Becka and i arrived in Accra safe and sound, baggage and all, and after only a little confusion and having been ordered around by a pretty disgruntled customs lady, we arrive at the hotel at about 9pm yesterday evening. Oh and for those budding followers out there Ghana time is as for Uk but without the daylight saving - so basically one hour behind. As for today - Becka and i thought we'd ... read more

Here are some random photos of what we have done so far.... I know its been a long time since we last wrote but here is a summary of the more exciting things that we've done.... We went on a boat trip that started out just cheery but then the boat began to take on a little too much water resulting in mild flooding! We had to stop by a bank whilst the driver got a jug and started bucketing out the water..... All the scary little bugs started fleeing from under the woodwork and ran across us, was not pleasant. However we did see the funny side of drowning though! Thankfully another boat came to our rescue, it was bigger and i guess it could take our weight better without drowning! (there were 13 of ... read more
