July 1st: HAPPY CANADA DAY as well as GHANAIAN REPUBLIC DAY! Two holidays in one to celebrate on this day in Ghana, however I’m not much in the mood for celebrating. The last two weeks have been a little bit rough for me, nothing serious so please don’t worry but it is the reason why I have not written in awhile. To be honest, I don’t really know what happened but I become seriously homesick, anxious and a little bit depressed. Louis, my EWB partner in Ghana, came back from Northern Ghana where he had spent the last 5 weeks. It was the first white person I had really spoken with since he left and I think I had a weird form of culture shock, all of sudden it was extremely obvious that I was white, ... read more

Life in Accra I just thought I should introduce my working and living arrangements here in Ghana. For those who weren’t able to read through my last posting, I am working with an NGO called EnterpriseWorks(EW) in the capital city of Accra. The office is located on the outskirts of Accra in a small area called East Legon. EW has rented a compound house where most of it is composed of office space, while there are some smaller rooms in the back that probably once served as servants quarters. This is where I live. There is a second kitchen, bathroom and two smaller rooms. I use one and the full-time security guard, Gilbert, lives in the other. We share the kitchen and bathroom. We have running water, air-conditioning, a main telephone line and an inside toilet. ... read more

Bonjour chers amis!

Hello my friends! I hope this finds you well. I hope you got the chance to glance at my special McGill update! Because it was pretty technical, and because the idea I specifically wanted to share with you in this issue is not very exciting, I will first try and entertain you with some fun thoughts about my life here. If you want more fun stories or details about my work, which has not changed very much since last time, refer to the French section! First, on Easter weekend, I had the opportunity of visiting the castle of Cape Coast. It used to be one of the most important English fortresses during the slave trade with the Americas. Tens -if not hundreds- of thousands of Africans have gone through this fort, in the worst conditions possible. ... read more

I've been taking it easy for the past week, spending a lot of time in Accra, with trips to Lake Volta and Kokrobite. Lake Volta is the largest man made lake in the world, the lake was created when the hydroelectric dam was built in the first years of independence, under the government of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of Ghana and independence leader. The lake and the scenery around it are spectacular. The rainy season seems to have started early. That doesn't mean it's been raining all the time, but there has been a lot of heavy rain. Parts of Accra have suffered from flooding as a result. This is not helped by the fact that many of the streets that have flooded are low lying, with no drains by the side of the ... read more

So, for those of you who can't read the French part, well everything is going quite well, despite a bit of culture shock. I have made some great friends, in the names of Seth and Augustin, 2 co-workers and Gilbert, a room-mate who studies at the Ghana Polytechnique. So about this culture shock! Well the truth is that the 4 weeks before my arrival in Ghana (between the Philippines, Indonesia, Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal), I was living at about twice my normal rate, and that life in Ghana is about a fourth of my normal rate... so that was quite the drop! It was also quite the change from the Philippines in that first, it is a drop 40 positions down the Human Development Index and second, all of my usual references and resources where gone. ... read more

Burkina Faso is a pretty small country and we didn't get to see a lot of it. We headed south from Ouaga through some national park (didn't see any wildlife except the usual ant and mossies) to the Ghana border. Again this was a quick crossing. Initially the border guys wanted to see us individually with our passports, but when 23 of us showed up outside his rather cramped office, he changed his mind! For those following on maps, the nearest big town is Bolga something. Ghana again appeared different from BF pretty quickly. More trees, friendlier people, the kids would jump up and down shouting and waving at us as we drove by, things unbelievably got even cheaper, and best of all, the official language is English - we could understand people and signs again! ... read more

From Abidjan our next and last stop in West Africa was Accra. Our Air Mali flight touched down in Accra in mid-morning. As was the custom on so many of Valene's tours, we would spend but a day in Accra. Clearing customs at Accra Airport, the British influence was noticeable in the uniforms and demeanor of the officials. Ghana had been independent for only 11 years in 1968. The Cold War contest for Africa was evidenced by the Air Mali Ilyushin 18 turboprop on which we had arrived. A series of taxis proceeded to take our group around the city. Sightseeing of the city focused on the modern structures put in place since independence. Stops were made at Independence Square with the Black Star Arch and at African Unity Circle to view the African Unity Monument. ... read more
