Obviously I'm cheating a little bit by backdating this entry by more than a month - but it has been a very busy month. Unfortunately it turns out that in my absence travelblog has managed to lose half of my entries due to some sort of server crisis, so for those of you that have forgotten, the last time I wrote I was all packed and ready to fly off for my well-deserved and long-awaited trip to the Galapagos.The Galapagos islands are mostly well known for Darwin's research there on finches and evolution and the like, but he was only there for two weeks, and spent his time conducting "experiments" like flinging iguanas by their tails and so on, so I feel that after my eight-day experience, I am very much as enlightened as him. In unserer Ferienwoche unternahmen Christina, Regine, Micha und ich (Jana) eine Reise zu den Galapagos-Inseln. Wir buchten eine Kreuzfahrt auf einem kleineren Boot (für 16 Gäste) und fuhren in den fünf Tagen verschiedene Inseln an (St. Cristobal, Lobo, Santa Fe, Espanola und Plaza Sur). Dabei war jede Insel auf ihre Art einzigartig. Die Verpflegung war suuper, natürlich alles inklusive, das bedeutet, ich habe mich sehr wohlgefühlt. :- ) Mittags, während das Boot meist das nächste Ziel ansteuerte, konnten wir uns auf dem Deck in der Sonne aalen. Wir haben natürlich hauptsächlich sehr viele (lustige) Tiere gesehen: unzählige Robben, über die man an den Traumstränden fast stolpert, Blaufußtölpel beim Balztanz, Riesenschildis - und auch wie winzig sie als Babys sind, Flamingos und vieles anderes Getier. My heart was pounding and my breathing was becoming deeper and erratic. I looked around me again and still could see nothing. Panic started to tear at my brain and my mind became fulll of images of people drowning, floating in the water, or scrambling desperately to the surface and never making it. All around me was blue. It was like I had crawled inside a globe or fallen into the sky. I tried desperately to dampen the feelings that were threatening to engulf me and sought to control my ragged breath. Ceviche (say-ve-chey): Cold soup-like dish usually bearing suspect raw fish or unidentifiable parts of aquatic creatures. How does it taste: when cooked correctly...incredible. The basic ingredients: limes (lots of ´em), raw seafood (virtually anything to your liking: shrimp, octopus, fish, lobster, prawns, scallops, conchalagua), tomatoes, bell pepper, onion, salt. Isn´t it dangerous to eat raw seafood: Yes!!! Actually, in theory the seafood in ceviche is not raw at all, as it is cooked in the acids of the limes before consumption. Before getting into this particular story of Robyn´s first "stab" at this local Ecuadorian delicacy, I think it is important to note that ceviche is treated exactly like that..."a local delicacy". Nach dem wir ein paar kalte Tage in Quito verbracht haben, sind wir durch die Nacht nach Manta (Westkueste Ecuadors) gefahren. Am Morgen sind wir dort mehr oder weniger ausgeschlafen angekommen und haben versucht uns fuer die Gegend und den Strand in Manta zu begeistern. Leider ist und dies misslungen, da sowohl die Stadt wie auch der Strand nicht viel zu bieten hatte. Am naechsten Tag sind wird dann ins Nachbardorf (Montecristi) gefahren, wo sich Helena fuer ihren Vater und sich einen original Panamahut kaufte (die Panamahuete stammen urspruenglich aus Montecristi, der Name Panamahut ist daher falsch). Am Tag darauf fuhren wir dann der Kueste entlang Richtung Salinas (wiederum eine Tagesreise im Bus).
