A sad day - as our final day in the Galapagos… Our only regret was taking a 5 day tour instead of an 8 day tour in the Enchanted Isles! After we discovered, it is also possible to spend a little time on a few of the islands independently, such as on Isabella island. This would definitely be worthwhile after participating in a tour. Extra time would be invaluable, just to allow the scenery to sink in around you, and to admire this special and unique place for a little longer. Definitely worth the money, nowhere else can you experience such unusual landscape and fantastic wildlife - a haven/paradise. An early start to see one last island before breakfast, 6.30am a wet landing on Mosquera island. This island home to many very cute and interactive sea ... read more

A good night's sleep, as no sailing until 4am, after sleep became difficult due to the rough waters! Arrived around 6ish at Santa Fé, a very beautiful sheltered bay in the northeast, mostly covered by giant Opuntia cacti, (a prickly pear cacti unique to this island). The water was a crystal clear turquoise colour and warm - just perfect for snorkelling. We had a good breakfast, fresh fruit and empanadas and tried a local fruit juice called Naranjilla, the appearance being a cross between an orange and tomato. Then we took the pangas across to the island, and spotted a giant turtle on the way. We walked around the island, tonnes of sea lions here, one barking and following us! They were very playful, swimming in circles and many offspring, although a few arguments taking place! ... read more

The old man stood in the classic catalogue pose. One foot on a rock, one hand on his hip. Ensconed in his whites, his ankle socks were pulled tight against his calves, a long way from the bottom of his shorts. His hat was perched at a cocky angle and the shirt tucked tightly in. He was creased and weathered from a life outdoors and his tanned skin had never seen the touch of suncream. His eyes were small and amongst his wrinkled face his features were not unlike a tortoise. He took a deep breath and steadied himself. With a sigh he began to speak, his arms spreading to indicate the sights around him ¨´Well, welcome to the Galapagos. Thirty years ago, this place was paradise. But now.....´´ He left the sentence unfinished. The deflated ... read more

Last night we docked around 2am, so a better nights sleep! Dry landing on Bartolome island at 6.10am, before the crowds arrived from the larger ferries. Lots of volcanic ash and unique vegetation, such as grey Tiquilia and greenish Chamaesyce. This island offered panoramic landscape views of cinder cones, unusual rock shapes, small coves with white sweeping sands and views of nearby islands and the perfect sunrise. There were some Galapagos Sea Lions in the distance, and Marine Iguanas basking on the black rocks. The volcanic lava lines were still visible on many of the cinder cones, and sunken craters within the shallow waters. After an uphill struggle, we gained fantastic views, then made our way back to the Sea Man, passing huge parties from the various ferries. We were rewarded by a delicious breakfast - ... read more

The Galapagos islands, such a unique and diverse environment, with so many endemic species such as Marine Iguanas, that sit there drinking the salty sea water, then occasionally spitting it back out! There really is no place like it on earth, bizarre rocky outcrops, white sandy coves, unique adapted fearless wildlife, and crystal clear turquoise waters - a snorkelers/naturalists paradise. We have been looking forward to this part of the trip for sometime, and it has lived up to our expectations, a major highlight, which we will recall great memories forever! We eventually arrived at Genovesa at 6am, following our long rough journey overnight, crossing the equator. We had a quick breakfast, then a dry landing at 7am, where we saw many Galapagos Sea Lions basking on the white sandy beach, and swimming in circles in ... read more

Very excited, our taxi collected us a little earlier than expected to take us to the domestic airport to catch our 8.20am flight to Baltra, the famous Galapagos islands. We had to go in transit via Guayaquil, a very affluent resort style city, with expensive properties built around lagoons. We were impressed by the prosperous waterfront, an outdoor showpiece of Guayaquil and the posh airport facilities. We arrived in Baltra, the airport runway sparse and desolate, decorated with strangely shaped cacti, it was midday. The airport was still in the construction process, and resembled a wooden shed open to all the surrounding elements! Baggage came tumbling off a small vehicle, where we would then search for our bags amongst the piles of other passengers' belongings. Then we were collected by a representative from the Sea Man, ... read more

Well.... where do we start? Sit back, this is a long one! We have just spent an unforgettable two weeks in the Galapagos Islands and I wish we could do it all over again. We took an 8-day boat trip around the islands and then spent another 5 days in the main town so Richard could get some dives in. On arriving we were met by our trusty guide Tommy, and taken to the "zodiacs" (dingys) to transfer to the boat. Everyone was quite obviously excited to be here and as we got off the bus we were confronted with a jam packed jetty full of sleeping sea lions absolutely flat out in the sunshine - after madly taking photos like some deranged Japanese tourist we stepped over them to get to the departure point. ... read more

Hey everyone, I am back from the Galapagos Islands. It was a really cool place. We took off wednesday morning and landed in Guayaquil. Then we stayed on the same plane and continued onto the Galapagos Islands. When we landed I looked out the window and was suprised to see that there wasn´t this lush green forest and giant tortoises walking around, instead it was a desert with dead trees and everything. Apparently we came in the rainy season I believe because that is when things die and it rains a lot. We had to take a 5 minute ferry ride from the island where the airport is (Baltra) to Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz Island has the biggest population in the Galapagos. Some 7,000 oeople live there and the town of Puerto Ayora has everything. There ... read more

hey hey hey, so my day of diving was pretty amazing as expected. i woke up at 6.15am, rushed through breakfast and made my way to the dive shop. i was the only aussie, and one of few fluent english speakers on board. but it was all good. after freezing my butt off during the 1.5hr boat trip to the island (trust -only cold day we had) we finally arrived and i warmed up by gearing up in the full wetsuite get up, inc hood. i looked so pretty!! my buddy was the dive master so that made me relax a bit, given i was a bit nervous. it´s kind of scary going 24mt below the surface with strangers (and a tank for air) and my memory of the signals etc was a bit sketchy! but ... read more

HI everyone, You want to hear a funny story??? When i arrived at the airport in Quito, to catch the flight to the Galapagos, i went to check my bag for my air ticket only to realise it was gone. I asked Jana ´have you got my ticket´and she says no i gave to you the day we arrived. a sudden wave of OH SHIT passed over me as i realised i cleaned out the rubbish from my bag. yep....you guessed it, i had thrown my ticket out with rubbish. i asked our guide if i could just provide ID and she said no you need the ticket. so jana and donna get out of the car and go check in while i head back to the hotel. luckily we had asked that our room ... read more
