Today we visited Espanola Island in the South of the Galapagos. On our way there in the safety of our dinghy our guide had a little accident. We were coasting along into Gardner bay where we were going to go snorkelling when I happened to notice the water was getting quite shallow, before I had a chance to say anything the front of the boat grinded onto a rock and our guide flew backwards into the sea with all her clothes on. Luckily she didn´t bang her head as the life jacket brought her back up but she was soaked through and so was her radio to communicate back to the boat! Once safely on the Island we went for a walk along the beach and saw 5 or so sea turtles swimming just a little ... read more

I managed to sleep soundly for about 3 hours, then we heard the anchor being raised, the engine of our 1st class yacht purrrrrring and soon enough the rough seas throwing us all over our cabin... It was going to be a long night! We were sailing from Santa Cruz Island to San Cristobal and would be sailing for 6 hours overnight - great. The alarm went off at 6.15 as breakfast was served at 7 (I don´t think i´ve ever had breakfast at 7!!), and we were greeted by a veritable banquet... fresh fruit, yoghurt, cereal, bacon, eggs, potatoe things, suasages and other bits and pieces. Somehow i managed to fit it all in and then we departed in the dingy for some snorkelling! Pauline was slightly aprehensive (to say the least) as there was ... read more

We arrived at the airport to be greeted by a Galaxy travel agent who helped us check in our bags and get our tickets, and thank god she did as South American domestic airports are not as easy to navigate as English ones, without her we would have been lost! When we finally got on the plane the confusion continued as it came over the intercom we were flying to Guyaquil in Ecuador and no mention of Baltra in the Galapagos, our destination?! In a bit of a panic I hastily asked the air stewardess if we were on the right plane, where she explained to me that we stopped in Guyaquil for 20 minutes to pick up more passengers to go on to the Galapagos - why didnt they just say that in the first ... read more

If anyone was wondering what happened to Auther Fonzerelli aka The Fonz, of Happy Days Fame, I can tell you he has moved himself to the Island of Isabella in the Galapagos and cunningly disguised himself as the local Parish Priest (also my hostel owner for the two weeks on Isabella). Our entry into Porta Vilamill in the back of Padre Angel Calderons pickup was like a rad carpet event. Everyone waving, calling his name and him responding with his million dollar smile and finger pistol point! From this point onwards we christened him "The Fonz" and when he dropped us back to the port on Tuesday the Fonzs fame didnt let him down and we left the island feeling like celebraties, everyone hugging us , waving , shouting (seriously!). Ok fair enough, there are ... read more

My trip to the Galapagos Islands started in Quito, and despite the fact that I was only about 20 miles from the Equator the weather was only about 15 degrees and pouring with rain. So I had to dig my jumper out of the bottom of my bag for probably the first time since I left home in August. The Galapagos Islands are 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador so I had to board yet another plane for the 2 hour flight to Baltra island, which literally has a runway on it and nothing else, then we took a boat and a bus to get to Santa Cruz island where our boat was waiting for us. And what a great boat, we had a really nice dining area, TV lounge, 2 sun decks (but not ... read more

Haven´t been able to upload my photos as yet but will keep trying!! Carrying on from the last entry . . . .Nik and I went to meet our boat on the pier of Puerto Ayora at 11AM. Sat there for ages then someone came along on a panga and told us to get on and he would take us to our boat. Once we were on the boat we were told we were on the wrong boat and dhould be on Estelle del mar 1 not 2. Moved boats and then met five people who had been on the boat for 4 nights already (2 english couples Evonne & John, Hemel & Arty and canadian Mary). They were all lovely and chatty. As it was siesta time we could do what we liked as we ... read more

Our flight from Guayaquil to Baltra on the Galapagos took around 1.5hrs and was pretty uneventful. On arrival, we met our 13 fellow travellers for the next 8 days aboard MV Letty. Quite an interesting mix of 15 pax - 9 female & 6 male; 8 of our generation (I’m probably the oldest!) and 7 kids around their 20’s; 6 Brits, 6 Americans and 3 Aussies. And most importantly, everyone mixed really well. To service the 15 guests, we had 11 crew, incl the captain & 2 assistants, 2 naturalist guides (Orlando & Harry, both very knowledgable and experienced, with excellent English), 2 engineers, 2 cooks, a barman & a housekeeper, who all looked after us all fantastically well. The company running the cruise was called Ecoventura - you could do far worse than contact them ... read more

Hola , Como estas? Wow see how the Spanish just flows!! Actually, in case I did manage to fool some of you, the Spanish is not going so well and I really need some more practise, the losing weigh and getting fit has also been a bit of a failure (probably due to me stuffing copious amounts of buttery cakes, pastas and numerous chocolate bars into my face!) and my final task to be completed in the first three months i.e. get a tan! Well I wont really go there, but after my week of agonising sun burn last month I still managed to revert to a lovely shade of creamy white only this time with less skin attached to me. However (my complaining has a point!) I am now in the perfect place to work ... read more

...is what the Footprint Guidebook to South America says about the Galapagos Islands, and I have to admit it was prettttteee sweet. At certain times the islands didnt meet our lofty expectations. For instance I didnt see 3 hammerhead sharks 5 metres away, while a sealion chewed on my flippers. But maybe I´m being a tad too fussy. I really cant think of any other place on the planet, where I would be happy to live out the rest of my life. With maybe an unlimited supply of beer, cable tv for football and good food. Anyway will add more to this very soon, keep you all in suspense... ... read more

... read more
