Isla Santa Cruz - Sunday 10th June Well, after a very early morning bus ride to Guayaquil and a very short flight we arrived at Baltra airport. Basically this involved a tarmac runway and ´baggage claim´which was literally a pile of bags on the ground yet amazingly enough all our bags came through unscathed (Iberia could learn from this - it is not necessary to leave my bag behind then, when it finally does get it to me two days later, deliver it broken!) We joined the Nationals queue to pay the park entrance fee only to have an irate (and very sweaty) airport man come and yell at us and try to drag us to the tourist queue. We told him we had CENSO to which he replied we could pay the national fee ... read more

STOP! Stop what you´re doing right now, put down that book, switch off the remote, leave the dishes, hey even quit your job (you never really liked it anyway)! Done that? Excellent, now go and book a trip to the Galapagos Islands. We promise you, it will be one of the most amazing things you ever do. We had the most incredible 8 days, words could never do it justice but don´t worry we'll give it a bash anyway. A quick interlude, as you may be aware we are slightly behind in updating this blog however the site has been down for the past two weeks and hence we had to load these pics twice, aaaagh. Anyways here goes again! Well truth is, there is not any just way of properly describing how the Galapagos are ... read more

We were swimming and snorkelling everyday with seals, sharks, turtles, penuins, rays, dolphins etc none of which have any fear of humans so they swam right up and played in the water inches away from us. Then there was hiking on the islands with the likes of giant tortoise, marine and sea iguanas, snakes and loads of amazing birds . Watched the mating dance of... read more

Sunshine, glorious sunshine. Our week long cruise of the Galapagos started with a flight into the largest island and a get-to-know each other session for our 6 crew and 9 passengers. Expectations were pretty high from the outset, so we were very happy to be blessed with marine iguanas and playful sealions as soon as we arrived. Our yacht was hmmm, somewhat less fancy than we had expected for a $1500 ticket. We were sharing a bed and a room no bigger than most laundry cupboards, it smelt pretty funky... not sure if you can get carbon monoxide poisoning from diesel fumes but as our bed was right on top of one of the engines (the one that worked) we´ll have to wait to find out if there are any side effects. Hot water was ... read more

I am going to skip right to the goods. Today I went on a boat tour to an island called Seymore Island it is just off the island Baltra where you fly to the Galapagos. Baltra is a 10 minute ferry ride from Santa Cruz the island I am staying at. Around 6:30 am I clamoured out of bed and got myself ready for the big day. At 7am we were starting to worry about not getting food, because breakfast usually isn´t served until 730. So we walked down the block and ran into a guy we met at the Secret Garden back in Quito, he was going diving. (The previous day he swam with a Whale Shark!!!) He didn´t know any places so I walked around, luckily the lady from the hostel was starting ... read more

I´ve finally made it to the Galapagos, I dream that I have fulfilled. It is such a great feeling. Unfortunately, that great feeling was hampered this morning from last night´s festivities (at least only until I got off the plane and smelt the salt air and the warmth of the equatorial sun): So where does one begin? Well it may seem like I party a lot, which I do do quite a bit, but you must understand something about Ecuador and South America. No one, I repeat NO ONE goes out until at least 11pm, and even then the bars only have a few people. Usually, keener gringos like myself and the people I go out with. So if you start at 11, that means clubs officially end at 3am but really they keep going ... read more

Where to begin, ohh my god, the Galapagos was absolutely fabulous and I never ever wanted to leave....sigh....ohh well....back to the beginning...(this could be a long one!) Flew out of Quito on the Saturday morning, managed to wake up in time for my check in, phew! Was talked to by a creepy Ecuadorian at the airport, he claimed to be a tour guide, and or a scientist, but I was quite glad to see we were sitting other ends of the aircraft!! Close call...Got chatting to an Ecuadorian couple on the plane (in my ohh so great Spanish), they were on their honeymoon to the Galapagos, and were so in love it was cute!! Felt a little guilty for asking them to move out of my window seat when I first got on, humdehum! Anyway, ... read more

We hadn't actually planned on diving today but due to the lack of hammerheads we ended up on a boat again today launching ourselves off at Gordon Rocks - the place i said i'd never go after the tales of horror which we've heard!! Apparently this is an advanced dive which should only be attempted after 30 dives or more but who cares about rules eh?! Our divemaster from the day before cleared us both for this dive as apparently we're calm enough under water to cope (big kids and all that)! The first dive was actually pretty calm current wise. We pretty much floated along with the current and only found one nasty bit where there was up and down surges making it difficult to stay in one place!! We saw about 5 turtles ... read more

We arrived in Quito on the evening of the 14th and checked into the Amazonas Inn which was a little different to what we´d been staying in for the previous two weeks but had everything we needed, even hot water and cable tv. That evening we walked up and down a few of the nearby streets but didn´t find any restaurants open and so opted for a take away pizza. Fortunately the lady who owned the hotel was very helpful and ordered the pizza for us, as our Spanish still doesn´t stretch that far! The following day, after catching up with our folks, we updated the blog then took a stroll around Quito. The streets around the hostel were much like any other functional city, with offices and shops and some nice little restaurants and ... read more

Today we went on our second day diving and yet again had to get up at the ungodly hour of 6:30, don't these people know that we're on holiday?! This time we went diving off Seymour Island, which is to the north of Santa Cruz, where we're staying. Our first dive was off Mosquera, which is an islet off Seymour, and there were loads of sea lions on the shore so we had our hopes up pretty high. Unfortunately Mosquera was crap! We spent the majority of the time swimming against the current, which ìsn't the easiest thing you've ever done. Also the visibility was only about 7 metres and let's put it this way, if there was anything to see then it was more than 7 metres away from us at the time! To ... read more
