A 5.30 taxi followed by 2 planes, a bus, a ferry, another bus and then a 2 hour speed boat ride (actually only 1 and a half hours as it really was a SPEED boat) and we arrive in Isabella Island. Exactly how you would imagine a south Pacific island - tranquil, sunny, white sand beaches, casual lifestyle, and then you see flamingos, hundreds upon hundreds of marine iguanas, grey feathered pelicans and you realize you are a lot further north than Tonga, Fiji or Samoa. Galalpagos Islands. Having not been at sea level for quite some time and not near any coastline, the obvious thing to do when you arrive is to head for the water. A beautiful 22 degrees, very refreshing and with company, not the 2 legged local kid kind but the local ... read more

The sound of waves are rolling around in my head. The air in the tent is thick and warm and I grapple with sleep. The lure of early morning waves pull me out of the tent and in to the day. Stepping out, my toes hit sand and I breathe in the salty air. The rising sun casts warm, red light that dances across the ocean. Nearby, a charcoal black marine iguana pauses on the white sand to consider this new creature on its´shores. It bucks its´head once, then twice, snorts sea water out of its´nostrils and resumes the slow trek across the beach. Its´snake-like tail follows, carving a small ravine in the sand. I wade in to the warm water, watching for manta and sting rays that cruise the sandy floor. A curious sea lion ... read more

Hi everyone at home or wherever you may be reading. A special hello to anyone reading this who was on board the Aneglique last week. Don´t forget to leave a message to say hi. My original plan for this part of the trip had been to turn up in Ecuador and see if I could get a last minute deal to travel around the Galapagos Islands. Then I started reading Charles Darwin´s account of the voyage of the Beagle around South America in the 1830s. I felt suitably inspired and knew I would be gutted if there were no last minute deals so, after a few dodgy money transfers and phone calls from central America to Ecuador, I had booked a 7 day epic voyage around the islands. The Galapagos Islands are located around 600 miles ... read more

Snorkeling with Sharks, Sea Turtles & Starfish - - Galapagos Islands, Ecuador Although we felt very settled and happy in San Francisco, our global journey beckoned and we continued our journey to South America. We began our SA journey in the footsteps of Charles Darwin in the natural paradise of the Galapagos Islands. Being spoiled from our era of Discovery Channel/National Geographic images of the Galapagos, we almost expected to be a bit disappointed. Disappointed? Not a chance - we were incredibly delighted! From the first day when we were snapping photos of the one lone marine iguana until eight days later when we had been fortunate enough to have seen thousands of them close-up…swimming, feeding, scrambling about -- we were in a perpetual state of awe. Marine iguanas are a lesson in adaptation. Scientists ... read more

We flew to the Galapagos without any plans or reservations. By far the best travel agency is Moonrise and if you are looking for a cruise, that's the place to go. We were offered quite a few boats varying in price range that were to leave in the next couple of days. The first day we went to the Charles Darwin Research Center. The following day we booked 3 day trip to Isabella Island and stayed there for two nights. We rode on horseback up to Volcan Chico which was fun because they weren't trail horses and you can get them to gallop. I had never ridden a horse before and Tiffany had years of childhood sleep-away horse camp under her belt. It was a workout. I ended up with a lot of bruises. Later we ... read more

We have just arrived back in Quito after 5 incredible days on board the Lobo de Mar 3 (sea lion) cruising around the Galapagos Islands. First day off the boat we saw giant tortoises at the Charles Darwin Research Centre - unfortunately we didn´t get get to see them in the wild but at the centre we got to go right up to them in their enclosures - it was out of this world. After the first day we pretty much went snokelling and walking on each of the islands everyday and everytime we saw something new. The highlights were swimming with white tipped reef sharks, penguins, sea lions, sting rays and eagle rays and huge turtles. On land, we saw land and marine iguanas (some of them were huge), sealions and their young, flamingoes, blue ... read more

On the 3rd of December Nadine and I flew from Guayaquil to the famous Galapagos Islands. We didnt know what to expect but it was defenately not what we saw. This 5 days on the cruise ship Encantada were really unbelievable. I can't tell you everything we did and saw, but everyday we just had a full program. We saw Blue footed boobies, red footed boobies, fragate birds, lots of sealions, iguanas, turtles and even more marine life. The most amazing thing is, that you actually can come so close to those animals and they just don't care. They accept you and even pose for your fotos. For me the most beautiful thing on that trip were my 3 dives I did on the cruise. I was pretty scared at the beginning, cause I didn't dive ... read more

I am sick to my stomach and beyond, everything I have eaten today is now feeding the fish, I have a thumping headache, and the boat won't stop moving. I am very seasick and it is worth it. I have never been seasick before, I've been queasy on boats before, but actually sick no. I've dived nearly 200 times and there is a first for nearly everything, the dives here were worth the pain though. First time seeing a school of Hammerhead Sharks, first time with an Octopus, my first Manta Ray. Watching the sea lions play with each other and us and even the Manta Ray - puppies of the sea - they are called "Lobo del Mar" in Spanish - Sea Wolves - I think it is a better name. The terrain underwater is ... read more
