So I did what every other diver would do in my situation - blew a huge load of moolah for a once in a lifetime opportunity to dive in the Galapagos Islands. I decided it was high time to do my Advanced Open Water Course so after looking around I found somewhere I could do it. My instructor was called Macarron (this is the Spanish word for Macaroni apparently the nickname arose from a slight inclination for all foods Italian!) and he was really nice but also a litle crazy - always a good combination when you have to trust someone with your life 30 metres underwater! So all in all I did 7 dives - each one different - I got to do loads of stuff I hadn´t done before - including go into some ... read more

The Galapagos is amazing! There are nto sufficient words to describe how wonderful they are, but I will try to give you an idea. The animals here do not see humans as a predetor and so have no fear for us, you can therefore get realy close to everything, makes getting good pictures very easy. The seas are full of every fish you can think off, the best things we have seen are Silver tiped reaf sharks, from our diggy, sea turtles, and most of us even swam and played with sea lions the other day when snorkeling. Its all been amazing, the Islands seem to be pulling out all the stops for us, we have seen everything that we would want, and were only half way through, infact we have seen things that are very ... read more

Cachalote means sperm whale in Spanish but the boat was far more elegant than it´s namesake. Our group of 16 passengers arrived on the keyside to be greeted by Galapagos sea lions idling on the benches and Cachalote, our beautiful motor/sailing vessel, moored just offshore. A couple of pangas (dinghies) raced out, lifejackets were distributed and within an hour of getting off the plane we were making ourselves comfortable in our floating home for the next seven days. Sailing around the islands, walking across the volcanic landscapes and watching and learning about the abundant and unusual wildlife of the Galapagos was to be one of the highlights of my travels. The Galapagos are composed of 50 volcanic islands set off the Ecuadorian coast. Although used for centuries by whalers and buccaneers, they were made famous by ... read more

So what exactly have I been doing for the last 6 weeks since I last wrote a blog?! Well it´s been all about the Galapagos Islands! On 3rd July, I flew from Quito to Guayquil on the way to the Galapagos. Oh so unfortunately they had too many people on the plane so got the chance to stay (with Charlotte and a guy called Marcello from Quito) in a 5 star Hilton hotel all expenses paid for one night and got given $500 cash on top - not bad for an easy days work!! And the food - one word amazing - for a start no rice which was the first time in over a month - I was a happy girl!! Next day we actually made the second part of the flight and landed in ... read more

Good Times to be Had by ALL! To finish off my 4 month trip blog, I have committed to writing this Galapagos Islands trip. The reason I can still give details is because I actually kept a diary of my galapagos trip like a prudent scout girl. It might sound like a documentary a bit but I will try to spice it up. Just for the record, the trip took place May 15-22, 2006. So according to my journal...here we go: Day 1 - Lobos Island From Quito, I flew to San Cristobal island. It is one of the two populated islands in the Galapagos. After waiting at the airport, I met my group and we headed or our ship which is called "Estrella Del Mar II". (which means star of the sea). After a small ... read more

Hello everyone, What a week it has been. It´s all so jumbled in my head. I took great care to write everything down so I could remember exactly how it went, but I left off with that a few days ago. And besides I still couldn´t link the name of the island, bay or beach we were on with whatever we were doing there. So as you may have guessed my dad and I really did manage to get the the Galapagos!! We booked a last minute 7 day cruise which we just finished yesterday. (Yesderday seems like a very very long time ago.) Considering we had no idea what we would be doing, the kind of boat we would be on or who we would be with things worked out very very well for us. ... read more

18th July- 26th july The Galapagos...The land of Darwin, the place where the concept of evolution was formulated. This was definitely a dream finally realised, and it lived up to all my expectations! My flight landed on the island of Baltra, then 2 buses and a boat trip later, finally arrived at Puerto Ayora on the island of Santa Cruz. This was to be our base for the next 8 days. Visted the islands of Santa Cruz, Baltra, North Seymour, Isabella, Floreana ,and Gordon Rocks. These were the islands that Charles Darwin had developed his theroy of evolution. Once all joined, volcanic activity and rising water after the ice age caused these islands to separate and the animals that lived on them to exist in isolation. Over time, different climates on the various islands combined with ... read more

Day 3 We had sailed to the island of Espanola overnight and started our morning with a hike on the islan. Shockingly the beach was full of Sea Lions! Maybe I haven´t been making it clear, but they are EVERYWHERE in Galapagos, and they are fantastic. Even though you get very used to seeing them, you never get tired of them. They are just funny! Here we saw the babies nursing from their moms. The babies that we saw were probably 3 feet long and they would just wiggle up to their moms who were (surprise, surprise) napping, and latch on. There were Iguanas everywhere on the rocks. They´re lying on top of each other and some rocks would have literally 10 Iguanas on it. We did see them walk around, but I never saw one ... read more

Leaving the Ecuadorian mainland bound for the Galapagos Islands, I was hugely excited. With my 8 day live aboard cruise around the islands already booked, all that was left for me was to enjoy what would surely be one of the most incredible experiences of my life, as well as being a great way to bring the curtain down on what had been a fantastic 9 months of travel through Latin America. Rather than go for a blow by blow account of each day, I’ve tried to summarize the essence of the trip and mentioned some of the highlights - hopefully letting the pictures do more of the talking. The cruise was a “live-aboard” trip. Therefore, we generally spent the days exploring the various islands on foot - arriving through a combination of dry-landing (when we ... read more
