Hello Everyone! I am writing from home, in Oregon, today. It is wicked cold here! I hope that everyone is doing very well and had pleasant Thanksgivings! We spent our wonderful ten days on the Galapagos, acquiring some very impressive sunburns, pictures of lizards, encounters with reef sharks and pelicans, and some very fresh, very tasty fish dishes. The Galapagos were interesting, if not exactly beautiful. Warm and humid, with aqua green water and brightly colored fish. Each night, the gray pelicans would line up on the pier and dive for fish. I sat and watched them dive for a while each night. If you come to the docks early in the morning, you can see blue-footed boobies diving for fish, tucking their wings into their sides, all streamlined-like, and whooshing underwater to catch fish. All, We are back from a quick 8 day trip to the Galapagos (on a nice yacht... if you exclude the odd bout of seasickness on Naera´s part) ... it really is true what they say about the islands. A seriously cool place and one that has some seriously odd looking wildlife... We started by booking a last minute trip which was more difficult than we thought (fewer options available) but we decided to go for a bigger boat (over a 100 foot for 16 passages and about 6 crew). We went out two days later and were away for 8 days / 7 nights. At the beginning we didn't realise how much time you spend on the boat sailing between the Islands.... so it pays to check out the boat before hand. The boat was ... read more

The day leading up to the eventual boarding onto Mistral II was slowed down by the anticipation of being on a liveaboard for the next 10 days, heading to locations that others only dream of diving in. Based on last minute instructions by a guide that turned up at the hostel to inform us that he would be taking us back to Baltra airport, we were bundled into a bus together with a bunch of forthright, rude 1950's era Austrian tourists and could not be glader to be rid of their company. Stepping onto Mistral II (run by Quasar Expeditions) it was clear that we were going to have a good time, at least above the waterline. Mistral II is a nice 12 passenger yacht well laid out for diving activities. Our diving and travel companions ... read more

Hello everybody... It seems that the less time we have left the fewer blogs we write... I beleive we left you in Santiago. Well plenty has happened since then.. we only spent 2 days in Santiago, the first was spent in a central park that was basically two small mountains, one with the token huge white statue at the top! We spent the day riding the gondola and hiking around to get different views of Santiago. Unfortunately the Andes that surround Santiago could not be clearly seen because of the smog... But it was a nice walk and a fun day... The next day we spent in the center of the city, although we had the crappiest map ever and opted instead to see a movie in the theater.. I know brutal... The next day we ... read more

Galapagos Islands When I was a little lad, I used to be obsessed by wildlife programs. So much so that my family still think I missed my calling as the next David Attenborough. On demand, I could name any animal that appeared on screen, such was my fixation with the natural world. There was one particular place that especially captivated me with its mysterious creatures found nowhere else on Earth - and this place was the Galapagos Islands, formed over millenia by volcanic activity in the Pacific Ocean. You can therefore imagine my excitement as the next part of our trip ... read more

Ecuador is a country of four regions, the highlands, the jungle, the coast and the Galapagos Islands. Although this region is only home to 30,000 inhabitants, it is as important to the country of 12 million as the other three regions. The natural history of the islands inspired Charles Darwin to produce his theories on natural selection and survival of the fittest, providing the clues that lead to him being convinced of the idea. The area is a national park, the same wildlife that Darwin studied 170 years ago still provides today the main attraction for the many visitors. After studying Spanish for 6 weeks in Quito, I hoped to get away cities and hopefully dive the waters around the islands. I found a last minute tour, and extended my ticket out by ten days so ... read more

We decided to travel to Galapagos 5 days before the cruise started. Up early (well 6.30am) on 18th November in time for an 8am flight with AeroGal. Touchdown was at one of two airports on Galapagos, Baltra Island, which is separated by a 100m channel from Santa Cruz Island, the main centre of habitation in Galapagos. A 1.5hr Bus -homemade ferry - Bus combo got us to the sleepy tropical island town of Puerto Ayora. Good to be back in the sun and heat and away from the stress of Quito! The journey from the North was amazing as it changed dramatically from barren cactus-scape in the rain shadow side one minute to lush green pastures on the windward side. Even saw a giant tortoise being sniffed by a horse in a field on the way. ... read more

After a mad dash around on the Friday in Quito, we managed to get ourselves onto a 4-day cruise of the Galapagos Islands starting the next Monday. The weekend before was spent relaxing and drinking, culminating in us making a sharp exit from a bar of seriously crazy dutchmen, one of whom was determined to get us to spend the early hours of the morning snorting cocaine, another who claimed to be the nephew of the Palestinian leader (he was whiter than us!) and the leader of their group who was a six and half foot rake-thin skinhead who had a large gun under his leather jacket that he kept flashing. We were both a bit worried about the Galapagos as we suffer from seasickness (and it did happen), but the tour turned out to be ... read more

The morning after we left Jatun Sacha, Diana, Beth and I all got into the ferry for the two an a half hour ride from San Cristobal to Santa Cruz. Now I use the term ferry loosely. You think ferry, you think big boat with cars, and slow. This "ferry" was a 30 ft. long wooden boat, not more than eight feet wide, with two outboard motors. There were two benches running most the length of the boat that sat the fifteen passengers and these rows were covered by a plastic tarp type covering so we would not get soaked by the spray. Now this little boat would be fine except for the added condition that we were going through the ocean and the waves were huge. I was actually fearing for my life. I was ... read more
