Nothing reminds me of the Galapagos like the sounds of reggaeton. Of course, now that I am in Fiji we don't get much of it. As you can tell, I have once again gotten to far behind in my blog. The main problem now is that I feel I won't do justice to what a great experience I had at Jatun Sacha. So bearing that in mind, here's what I've got. It was far better than my clumsy prose are able to express. So where to begin? Well, in the last few days at JS I started to notice all the little systems and routines that I had developed for living in these difficult conditions. The first and most important routine was the shower routine. Everyday we would get incredibly sweaty, filthy and just all around ... read more

Apologies for the delay in this update, we’ve been all over the place and not had chance to sit at a computer for any length of time! 15th - 22nd October 2006 Galapagos Islands, Pacific ocean. We flew from Quito to Baltra Island in the Galapagos which took two hours. Good views over the Pacific on the way. Step off the plane into bright sunlight and take a transfer to our boat, the Angelito. Sea lions sunbathing on the benches at the harbor entrance! There were 16 people on the boat, we being the youngest by some years and the only Brits! Mix of people including 4 great Canadian women who were celebrating their 50th birthdays. Old school friends and good laugh!! After a quick safety talk, we were off. 7 days aboard and lots of ... read more

I managed to grow very fond of Cuenca in my week or so of study and shoulder recuperation. Nevertheless, with a slight boost to the Bertie lingual capacity and a reasonably intact pair of shoulders I was packed and ready, yet rather sad, to leave. After the usual bland bread, jam and hot chocolate hostel breakfast, the manager gave me a note from an unknown traveller, who had heard of my travel plans from the spanish school. A phonecall later, and I thankfully had travel partners for the Galapagos: Mark and Cas from Brighton, Blighty. Together we bussed to sweaty, brash Guayaquil for the night, and flew the next day. I hadn't known a great deal about the islands, other than the costliness, and from traveller reports that if I was to have high expectations, I ... read more

Monday 16th Up very very very early to catch a taxi at 5.30am to the airport. I thought this was supposed to be a holiday!! In fact I'm pretty nervous that the taxi won't even arrive. He's a minute late (I hadn't started panicking yet). At the airport we meet a few people who will be on our boat. We spend a couple of minutes chatting to them (Patti, Helena and Marcy - 3 American ladies over 50). They're amusing especially as a group so I can't help but call them The Golden Girls! We fly to Guayaquil (again) to pick up some more passengers. Kate's got the window seat in the plane (I'm such a nice person) so I spend much of my time cramping her so I can see where we are - good ... read more

Galapagos is a magical place. It's one of those places about which you hear so much, and think - it can't be true. It can't really exist in reality. But it does. No doubt it is one of the highlights of my (so far) 8-month trip to South America. Only here you can get to those animals as close as you want. And there are so many of them, and of so many types! And non of them is afraid. The feeling is incredible. Just walking around in an animal paradise and seeing different animals every few steps. The abundance of the animals can't really be described. The best example for it might be Puerto Baquerizo Moreno which is a town in Isla San Cristobal - one of the inhabited islands of the Galapagos archipelago. There ... read more

Well, it is Sunday afternoon and in about three hours we have to head back to the reserve after a wonderful, dry, relativly bug free, and quite sunny weekend. I mention all those adjectives because none of them apply to the reserve. After I finish here at the Internet cafe Beth and I will head by the panderia to pick up some snacks, go back to the hostel to each take our last hot shower for a week and then we catch the cab back to the reserve. The weekend has been great. On Friday, normally we do a hike from the reserve to some spot on the island but it was raining too hard and the trail were going to be too muddy. Too muddy that is, for even our rubber boots and when I ... read more

So we have been here for about a week and a half. Its an amazing place... The first day we arrived with two other volunteers and rode to camp in the back of a pick-up, the local taxi´s are all 4 door white pick-up trucks, some with 4wd but mostly not. The other volunteers we came in with are a Spanish guy named Pablo, who we´ll definitely meet up with in Barcelona and a girl just out of high school from Minnesota, Katie. We got to camp and its definitely in the jungle, its an old farm, and we´re actually staying in the original house. Although we´re sometimes concerned with the mold in the wood, its a solid 2 story building with plenty of hammocks and several rooms upstairs and down. We actually have our own ... read more

I am not really where to start…..writing about my experiences in the Galapagos. The beginning would probably be a good idea but starting to write by saying "in the beginning" is far too ominous, so will just jump right in I guess. There are a few different ways to see the Galapagos Islands, however cruises are the most common and in the end most effective (you see more). Access to many of the islands is totally regulated and requires a licensed guide etc etc (which is probably a good thing as people wandering everywhere would make a terrible mess I am sure). The standard "packages" are 5, 8 and 10 days cruises but in actual fact you lose nearly two full days, as it takes a day to get there and the last day is rather ... read more

Sorry its been so long since my last entry, if you check I finally uploaded some more photos. The internet is always unreliable and travelblog was down for a while. After a few adventures we have made it to the Galapagos and started our volunteering. We get to come to town on the weekends and can use internet. The reserve we are working on is great and all the other volunteers are super nice. I will definitley elaborate more on that later. But for now I wanted to give you a quick recount of the rest of our time in argentina and show some more photos. So after Iguazu we spent 2 days 3 nights in El Calafate in Patagonia. Our frist whole day there we took a tour into the national park and saw the ... read more

Wow what a week....I didn´t really know what to expect from the Galapagos but it was amazing and although very expensive, was worth the money for sure. Even before going it had been a great week. Spanish school went well and with the end in sight seemed a lot more interesting in week 4 even if I did have a new teacher who I didn't much like. On Thursday morning we went on a trip to the top of one of the big volcanos around Quito, Guagua Pinchinchca, with the vulcanologist who we had seen speak a week or so earlier. It was a 3.30 start which meant getting up at 3 which was extremely painful but was well worth it. We headed up a very steep and bumpy road in a jeep and typically I ... read more
