until i go!!!

So the general idea is to head off into the depths of south america, stopping in Quito for 7 or so weeks, teaching kids english (yes, me and children, it will be interesting!- it'll do me good!!) with weekends off to lie on a beach/go white water rafting/climb volcanoes/bike/all those outdoor things i love but forget about when in the uk!! then into the jungle for a week or so, and down into Peru, possibly via a trendy surfing beach for a couple of weeks- Mancora/Trujillio, then on to Lima to pick up an organised tour through Inka-land and up into Bolivia, and winding up in Rio for 3weeks of lying on a beach- i WILL have a tan- haha! so long amigos! xxx

Finally arrived in Bonito- yet another tiny town without much nightlife, meh, nevermind! Booked to go snorkelling down the Rio de Prata on Thursday- was the most amazing snorkelling in the river- world famous. We floated in the pool at the top of the river watching the fish in the clearest water ever...then we floated downstream and observed hundreds more fish- totally reversed my opinion of snorkelling from the traumas of rough, cold sea currents off the Galapagos with ill fitting masks! Tried diving down to a hot spring in the middle of the lower part of the river too- yet the concept was totally beyond my logic! Lazed around that afternoon after lunch back at the centre in the afternoon sun, muy bueno!! Friday we headed out to the local "beach" although being nowhere near ... read more

so from numerous drunken nights out and goodbyes in Sucre we caught a high quality bus (ahem!) to Santa Cruz- not the epicentre of the universe it must be said! we arrived saturday afternoon- enough time to wander around town, discover there was NOTHING to do so we headed off to the cinema to watch an english film- never have i been more happy to watch harry potter- escape the spanish! then for sushi- however sushi is never my first choice- especially not when the menu is in spanish, and nobody has any idea whats what- so i end up ordering raw meat- carpaccio! eeeuuurgghhh! yuk yuk yuk! sunday there was even less to do in santa cruz, although we also managed to spy a 3 toed sloth, which hung around in the trees in the ... read more

Arrived in La Paz to bump into Jill & Derrick in reception....ships passing in the wind I tell you...but however we did book to go down "death road" the following day (none of my GAP group wanted to go, chickens!) Out for dinner at a really cool restuarant called Mongos in La Paz, live music, and lots of cocktails at very south american prices, yay! Up bright and early the following morning however for the bikes...the best around apparantly, double suspension and god knows what else. Not quite sure what I´d signed up for, but I was about to find out.....the views were fantastic, and the 40k almost all downhill...save for 4hellish k uphill...dammit!! The track we went down used to be the main road, but 6months ago a new road opened, but the track-road ... read more

Back from the Inka Trail....everyone pretty tired, and the hotel somewhat resembling a hospital!1 We decided that we quite wanted to see the ruins around the city (but a stiff 30min-1hr uphill walk away) but couldnt be bothered to walk....so we hired horses & a guide for the morning and headed out around Cuzco, the scenery was beautiful, definitely worth seeing....the horse part however was somewhat interesting...I guess horseriding is something I fancy myself as naturally able to do, but I actually haven´t been on a horse since I was 10, and the horse i rode (for all of 10weeks maybe) called Honey, got pregnant, and I haven´t been near a horse since...despite my aunts attempts!! So yes, on this ere horse, called Abela or something, white, pretty and "gentle" apparantly....however the guide didn´t happen ... read more

So yes, the title does indeed imply that I have survived the Inka trail...shock horror!! It was fantasic, but I shall come back to that later.... Following the failed attempt to leave the city last Wednesday we spent another day in Arequipa...the streets were crawling with protesters, especially in the main square where we had all organised to meet for lunch! Was a good atmosphere though in the town, had no idea what they were chanting, but they all seemed to want different things!! Got off the streets for a few hours (having planned to shop and having found the shops to all be shuttered up with a tiny door open in case of a riot kicking off!!) to a museum with the best preserved mummy in south america, huanita. Was interesting learning all about ... read more

Arriving into Lima from a luxury night bus, Ana, Phil, Jill & I (buses are great places for meeting gringos....everyone just chats away in English regardless of the locals looks!) headed off to a HI hostel...which considering they are supposed to be fantastic and of a much higher standard, to be honest, im not at all convinced!! We headed out to the market after showers and some OC watching....where much restraint had to be exercised....however I did manage to pass off my fake 100soles bill to a market dude for a poncho...so really the poncho was free because I´d already written off that 100 bill!! Hehe!! Cooked dinner that night...so cheap, and had a very early one...buses aren´t that comfortable after all!!! Friday Phil & Ana pushed off early, but Jill & I checked into ... read more

So after a marathon bus journey we finally arrived in Cuenca, and jumped into a taxi to the closest and cheapest hostel...which didn´t turn out to be too bad...but it did have a cafe-restuarant in the middle, and all the rooms were off it...a little bizzare when you need an early night and you run to the bathroom in pjs and there´s men and women dressed up to go dancings....ohh well!! First day in Cuenca wasn´t spectacular, in fact, it pissed it down with rain the entire day....making sight seeing a little difficult...i managed to spend 3 and a half hrs on the internet though, updating blogs etc which made the day pass quite fast...is a strange town though Cuenca, everythings hidden away behind non-descript looking doors.. made looking for places to eat very hard ... read more

So up early to head off into the wilderness and the unknown on Saturday, on one hideously uncomfortable 10hr bus journey on what can only be described as mud tracks...argh.....Hannah also took the window seat cos she gets travel sick, which meant whereas usually I can lean against the window and sleep the entire way, I was rather uncomfortable on our bumpy bumpy bus...Nevermind, I had my music! Had copius supplies of ritz biscuits, oreo wannabees and juice....not exactly the healthiest diet, but its all the corner shops seem to offer when it comes to travel food...no M&S sandwiches here... Into Coca finally at 5pm and to our hostel. Coca, however, is not the friendliest of places and we felt very out of place....it´s an industrial oil town, which has very much the air of ... read more

Where to begin, ohh my god, the Galapagos was absolutely fabulous and I never ever wanted to leave....sigh....ohh well....back to the beginning...(this could be a long one!) Flew out of Quito on the Saturday morning, managed to wake up in time for my check in, phew! Was talked to by a creepy Ecuadorian at the airport, he claimed to be a tour guide, and or a scientist, but I was quite glad to see we were sitting other ends of the aircraft!! Close call...Got chatting to an Ecuadorian couple on the plane (in my ohh so great Spanish), they were on their honeymoon to the Galapagos, and were so in love it was cute!! Felt a little guilty for asking them to move out of my window seat when I first got on, humdehum! Anyway, ... read more

New girls arrived on the Monday this week, Manon from France-Quebec, and Janice from California in the US, both very lovely and I spent a few days telling them what was good to do and getting jealous of the fact they had it all to come! Tuesday saw more classes, with one of the clever kids, Danny, managing to break his pen, such that the nip flipped off and hit me on the forehead, now this would have been okay, unfortunately I managed to rub ink all over my face, and it just wouldn´t go! The kids found this highly amusing and I felt like a tit! Nevermind....Met up with some of the I to I recruits in the evening, but once more, most of them were heading off to the jungle and or the ... read more
