We went exploring today into Centro which is the city of Rio and the business hub. Absolutely packed, people everywhere. We tried to do the cultural thing and visit the National library and a few museums but they were either closed or to be frank - rather dull. We spent ages walking to find a Palace and then had a walk around the square where slavery was abolished in Brazil. We then hopped on the ´Bonde´ up to Santa Teresa which used to be a Bohemianesque sort of place. The tram is quite an experience as it runs through Lapa (which is a ´lively´ neighbourhood) and as such young scallywags jump on and off the tram and try to nick valuables. We managed to escape unscathed though and were amazed when we got to the top ... read more

So, 8 days in, some bad experiences and lots and lots of good ones. Considering in our last entry we really weren´t sure of Rio, we can definitely now say that we like it a lot! Over the last few days the entire feel of Rio has changed, it´s a city which changes with the weather. Since the sun came out, there has been a very different feel. More Cariocas (people who live in Rio) on the streets, drinking, eating out at night. Rio is definitely a city which is better in the sunshine! On Tuesday night we had a breakthrough with the food situation. Thanks to Lonely Planet, we tried a ´kilograma´ restaurant. You get a ticket, fill your plate from the buffet (wow, salads, salsas, chicken, beef, rice and more), you then get it ... read more

Thursday morning saw the intrepid five up early and without Aidan for once. However, his hand could be felt (not literally) in proceedings as he had organised a three hour bus tour for us in Rêcife, Olinda, and all points in between. Our guide was a very enthusiastic English-speaking Brazilian named William, with his driver whose name presently escapes me. Both could speak English and ein Bisschen Deutsch; I reckon they must have taken turns doing the driving and the touring. Anyway... William soon had a groggy Irish family roaring and whooping, putting everyone in a pretty good mood. Nothing unusual there, you say. We went along the beachfront of Boa Viagem on our way to Rêcife Antigo and William pointed out all the exercise and sports facilities that are free to all to use; it ... read more

I´m on the bus to Foz Do Iguacu in Brazil by 7.30 am. I love the fact that border towns have roadsigns pointing to entire countries - ´Left - Town Centre. Right - Bus Terminal. Straight on - Brazil´. At the Argentine border I am stamped out, and that appears to be it. We cross the bridge over the Rio Iguazu, and I get a tingle of happiness as we reach the other side. Brazil. Country no.19. Immigration formalities are relaxed when it comes to people making the day trip to see the falls. Indeed, on the Brazilian side I am required merely to exit the bus, and wipe my feet on a doormat, before reboarding and continuing on my way. At least they have high standards of cleanliness. Like a fool, I´d assumed that ... read more

My long awaited trip begins........................ ( unfortunately my photos weren´t put on the cd correctly so i have lost most of the) When we arrived we headed straight for Copacabana beach which was only down the road from our lovely hostel! The beach was huge with white sand and huge waves In the Evening we went to a local football match where the atmosphere was just amazing, we joined in with the locals singing and dancing! The following day we decided to see the sights and went to Chrsto Redentor- Corcovado, Rio De Janeiro. This was quite amazing! The statue is huge and the View of Rio was stunning- a lot nicer than seeing it on the ground! We also went up to sugar loaf mountain and watched the sun set over Rio. It continued to ... read more

Travel in equatorial rainforest is by one of two media: plane or boat. The jungle doesnt like roads and reasborbs them as fast as you can build them. To get into the jungle, I flew into Manaus, a city of 2 million people surrounded by millions of square miles of sparsely inhabited jungle. This anomaly of a city came about at the turn of the century thanks to the rubber boom, for a short time making it one of the richest cities in the world. It has since returned to relative poverty, but because it's a tax free zone, most of the motorcycles and electronics from asia are now assembled here. Out of Manaus, I took a tour into the rainforest, where I spent four days in a riverside camp, taking hikes and boats into the ... read more

Well we have finally decided we have enough information to be worthy of a blog entry... So well then, we arrived in Rio on the 4th of October and were met at the airport by the wonderful Tina. After dropping our bags off at Tina and Adriana´s Copacabana hostel, Tina took us up the ´superfly mountain´just incase we fancied a spot of hang-gliding. About half way up we were stopped and searched by the police (this is basically a money making scam in which they hope to find something/anything wrong and then accept a bribe to let us off). They had a thorough look through the car and I was subjected to a body search (I needed a cigarette afterward!). In fairness they were quite pleasant asking which football team I supported. When I mentioned Tottenham ... read more

Our flights to Rio did not go according to plan. Manchester to Heathrow was delayed, BA then parked up at the wrong terminal. We had to wait for buses to escort us to the right terminal which took a long time. Making our way between terminals was not easy...Heathrow is not the best labelled/signposted airport in the world! we only just made it to our flight! Our connecting flight from Sao Paulo to Rio was also delayed due to the cleaners having to come onto the plane and dust between the aisles! Luckily when we arrived in Rio we passed through immigration with no mention of a yellow fever vaccination and instead we were greeted by a woman dressed like she was off to a luxury casino (stilletos and flowing black dress) and a saxophonist playing ... read more
