In most cities I´ve been to the rich areas always occupy prime locations with all the best views, but in Rio it is different. High on the hills above Rio is precariously perched Favela Rochina with its mish mash of houses stacked on top of each other. If you´ve ever seen the movie ´City of God´ then you´ll know what a Favela is. For those who haven´t it´s a very poor shanty town ruled by drugs lords and Brazil has many Favelas. As a tourist it´s the last place you´d venture alone, but it´s possible to do a guided tour. Some would argue it´s tourism gone one step too far when people want to go and gawp at poor people, but I don´t see anything wrong with going to see how people live - especially when ... read more

We arrived in Cordoba at 11a.m after a 20 hour ride, immediately checked our packs into the bus station´s left-luggage deposito and made our way to the pre-pay taxi rank. "Eros hotel por favour". A waiting driver gave me a knowing wink. Fifteen minutes later and we pull into what looks like a posh motel. However, here you clock the digital read-out at the entrance and park your car in the corresponding garage or, in the case of arriving by taxi, you walk into the garage (without driver), close the door and proceed through the door at the rear. You are greeted by a swanky en-suite room with prominent sunken jacuzzi, wall-to-wall mirrors, plush seating area, interestingly-channeled TV viewable from anywhere, and an array of lighting to set the mood.... Within seconds the phone rings to ... read more

According to some urban legends I heard wafting around, Sao Paulo's metropolitan area is half the size of the Republic of Ireland. I wouldn't be at all surprised. Something close to 20 million people live in this sprawl of concrete jungle, the third biggest metropolitan area in the world (after Mexico City and Seoul). We ventured out from our hotel on Rua Dom José de Barros and spotted the European-styled cultural centre of the city, the Republican Square. It's got old columned buildings, full of the grandeur and imperial design of the original builders. I went along with Aoife to the Banco de Brasil building, one of the tallest in Sao Paulo, and we went up to the top (for free, I might add - value for money) and marvelled at the awesome skyline. You really ... read more

Hello all, Sorry it's been a long time since the last update. I'm afraid this entry is very long now because there is a lot to say. You may want to print it out and read it in bed to help you fall asleep!! Our return to the bikes, after the enforced rest at Curitiba, was short but sweet! We left our bags in the hotel and went on a day trip recommended to us by our cycling friends from Curitiba. The first part of the day was spent descending from the city which lies 1000m above sea level to a small colonial village called Morretes almost at sea level. The unsealed road we took called the 'Graciosa', meaning charming, attractive, is the first route the Portuguese used to travel from the coast to the plateau. ... read more

... read more

Den lokale juicebar (a.k.a.
