... read more

We stayed here 3 days and took a boat trip. Look out for Claudia at the bus station - can't remember the name of her hostel, but we stayed there (on Deodora, near the old town) and it was very clean and good value - free internet and breakfast included. Her english husband was also very helpful to us when we needed a dentist!... read more

Foremost. The other morning I lay dreaming. In the dream, I was traveling and reflecting on my experiences, transcribing my thoughts onto paper. Gradually, the sunlight filtering in through the mosquito netting draped over my bed and the ongoing calls of roosters brings me into consciousness. And I realize that reality is far stranger than anything I could have possibly dreamnt. My location, a small village of roughly 300 people called “23,” deep into a rural zone of southern Bahia. How I arrived here. Wednesday morning, I awake in Manga, make a mad dash to the river bank to climb aboard a small vessel. The river is short here, and the crossing is quick. I spend the day exploring the nearby town of Matias Cardoso, which boasts the oldest church in Brazil, with 450 years, depending ... read more

Decided at the last minute to go with a group of young travellers (and Rowley) all from the European Union ;-). These explorers are Kate and Hannah, Rowley and Adie denoted here in their original pairings ;-) (I am so funny!). We all met at the hostel and left on the Sunday for ´Jungle Beach´ thus forming Team Jungle. Anyway, a very civilised 2 hour vodka fuelled bus ride later we arrived at Casimiro de Abreu to look for someone called Ralph who would take us up to Jungle beach. Whilst some of us relaxed with another vodka and a game of keepy-up, Kate Hanna and Rowley bargained haggled and arranged our taxi to Jungle Beach. The account of the taxi ride itself is probably worthy of low budget horror film - I have never seen ... read more

Tendo o Grando!! Well, after a rather strenuous 20hours of flights, departure lounges, take-offs and landings, we finally arrived in Rio!! Day 1: Spent the first day chilling, eating and drinking the local beers (which are pretty damned good!!!) Day 2: Booked ourselves on a city tour, which took us to the national park which covers vast swathes of Rio. Trekked to a waterfall, and up to a bat cave, dissapointingly, no bats to see!!! From there, we wemt on to Maracena Stadium, home to some brazil games. See photos. Dressed up in some carnival outsfits to make pratts of ourselves, before dinner in a local resteraunt in Santa Theresa, which is an old calonial village. Most spectacular part of the day, was the view from the top of Christ the Redeemer. The iconic statue at ... read more

Have made it safely to Rio. Weather is quite poor today so visability is limited thus we are just getting our bearings rather making the trip to Christ the Redeemer! Trip from the airport was interesting. Taxi´s exhaust fell off, so the driver put it in the trunk of the car and away we went. The only thing was we broke right outside our hostel but the taxi driver didn´t realise this and took us on a wild goose chase around St Teresa! Very interesting and a tad scary! Driving in Rio or Brazil for that matter is not for the light hearted! I have to say for all the great things people say about Rio they seem to back it up with equally bad things which has somewhat put a downer on how I feel ... read more

This entry will be very picture-driven for two reasons: the first being that I have taken LOADS of pictures over the last few days and have not uploaded any of them for you to see; and the second reason being that I have just spent 15 hours on a bus and am not feeling particularly inspired to write. So without further ado I will give you the run-down of what I´ve been up to since I last updated: My final couple of days in Sao Paulo were great fun - I went to a very cool samba club and listened to some brilliant live samba. I also tried to dance, but realised rather quickly that I am not as good at samba as I am at salsa and merengue. It is really hard! But at least ... read more

Awsome. Rolled up to watch Fluminensi Vs Sao Paulo. Stadium holds 80-90k we think and although there were only 5-6k at the game the atmosphere was quality. The drums and singing started and didnt stop till the end - excellent. The footie itself was very good, containing everything you would expect from the Brazillians. Knocking the ball out from the back, Bravenbour-esque centre halves overhead kick clearences. Caskey-esque keepers straying outside the 6-yrd box. Sao Paulo are currently top of the league and expectant winners so were a bit stunned when Flumi went ahead. Sao Paulo finally won 1-2. After the footie a few of us went for a Churasscaria - all you can eat meat feast! These are very popular here along with the Kilo restaurant where food is weighed. The meat is amazing and ... read more
