At last, the weather came up with the goods and we were treated with a fantastic warm day on which to visit the most famous beach in Brazil - Copacabana. My father had made the odd request "to walk on the Copacabana before I die", so we were happy enough to accede to his wish. Hopes were fading for a repeat of the 464 bus to Ipanema as we wheeled our way towards the ocean on a very well-behaved Rio bus. The sun was scorching as we walked on the warm golden sands, and without sunglasses it was pretty tough on the eyes too. However I was able to glimpse some of the very fine waves that I could have caught if KLM... ok, I'll stop whining now. See for yourself. Upon sitting down at one ... read more

I bang out these words on a beaten keypad, in an internet café in the city of Manga, named for the mighty fruit, the manga (or mango). The region is full of said fruit, albeit it early in the season, and they dangle like green potatoes or giant lima beans. Popular myth suggests there is a danger in approaching the mango at this time - in Itacarambí I met a woman who claimed her 4 year old cousin died last Sunday from just this. Temperamental fruit, it should never be eaten with pork, eggs, of milk. So I wait, and unfortunately will not be able to tell you about the mangos (or mangas) in mango (Manga). The city sits along the river São Francisco, or Chicão as "he" is known here (Chicão meaning "big Chico" and ... read more

Hello all, As promised I must complete the remainder of my last blog. Unfortunately, this entry must be done without any pictures. Since my last entry I have wandered up to Canada where, without thinking, I took all of my photos off my camera and put them on my computer for safe keeping, thus making uploading any of my old pics now impossible. Sincere Apologies! I will edit the blog to include pictures upon my final return to Canada. In the meantime, I will try to be discriptive to help your imaginations. Although I am now in Rio de Janeiro (an awesome and vibrant city), my story left off with Bryce and I leaving Portillo (the ski resort two hours north of Santiago, Chile) to make our way 1200 Kms south to a Chilean town called ... read more

So far, our weekend had been good and we had enjoyed almost everything. The weather, however, had turned out badly - wet and cold, it was not the Rio we were expecting. Granted, they're only coming into spring over here now but there had to be some sun here somewhere! In a situation like this, there's only one man to turn to - JHC Himself. We hadn't seen the iconic statue most of the weekend because of mist and there wouldn't have been much point in heading up because we wouldn't have been able to see jack shit. However, on Monday morning, God had truly smiled upon us, as a warm sun shone down on us from a partially cloudy sky. The omens looked good - we hot-footed it to the, eh, foot of the Corcovado. ... read more

So I am now sitting in Peru...again. We just left Maceio yesterday and Im really sad about it. I absolutely loved every minute we had there. Our hotel was called Hotel Beautiful Beach if that tells you anything. We were ON the beach and it was gorgeous. I played sand volleyball every single day and my skin is so dark that I looked Brazilian by the end of the time there. We got to be there for the political campaigning and lots of other activities. Once Dr. Good came we all got on a big boat and went out to explore the coral reefs. They were gorgeous and we had a great time! We also got to go to a Brazilian soccer game...there is no sporting event like that in the US..I promise. Leaving Maceio was ... read more

So having survived our first night in Rio, we stumbled into Sunday and Brazil's election day, where the incumbent President Luiz Inaçio Lula da Silva went into the final day's polling marginally above the 50% needed to secure re-election. However as the day progressed, it became obvious that Lula wasn't going to make it, with his nearest challenger Geraldo Alckmin picking up just over 41% of the vote. This means that there's gonna have to be a runoff election between these two at the end of October, along with all the other undecied gubernatorial contests. Good shit! Otherwise, the lads and I took the cable-tram up the hills into Santa Teresa, a quaint sort of neighbourhood on one of the smaller hills in Rio. It was only 60 centavos and I can safely say it's among ... read more

It was only a matter of time before my entries turned to talking about my stomach, and what I put in it! Both in Paraty and here in Sao Paulo I have eaten extremely well. I had three main meals in Paraty, and each was absolutely fabulous (if a little on the pricey side). It was a welcome change from the rather crap food we had eaten in Ilha Grande, and the food here in Sao Paulo has also been great so far. I must explain about kilo restaurants, a common sight here in Brazil and one I would welcome seeing in the UK. They are, basically, self service restaurants that are laid out in canteen-style - sounds awful, I know, but the food is fabulous and I have found so much joy in being able ... read more
