The Choro trek is no doubt about descents. The first day of the trek started with a short one and a half hours climb to the Apacheta pass of the Andes, but from that moment on, it was all about just going down 3000m in altitude in the remaining 2 and a half days of the trek. From the high pass we had superb views of the mountains around, and for me it was the highlight of the trek... After the pass, the Inca Trail led us slowly to the Yungas - a subtropical climate zone, on the way passing a few small isolated villages. There we enjoyed buying fresh fruits from the villagers, and even spoiling ourselves with a coca cola (after all - truth must be told - these villages has become much more ... read more

After the rigours of the Inca Trail, we have both returned to some kind of normality. Nadine´s Salmonella seems to be losing the fight against the antibiotics, and I am back to using the toilet again! (Inca trail toilets were somewhere between that toilet in 'Trainspotting´and the gates of Hades, and I have the uncanny ability to shut down my bowels in times of crisis. Too much information I know!!!) So after a brief sleep in a normal bed, we headed to Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world at 3800m above sea level (For the geeks out there, supposedly 'Navigable´means you can sail a steel hulled ship in it?). Its about 135 long miles by 50 miles, so I guess its pretty big. The scenery is amazing here ... read more

Sedaj pa v ... read more

Besides the many misfortunes that happened my first couple of days, i enjoyed bolivia. if you come there with no plans, and nothing bad happens, it is a paradise. sorry guys, i have gotten too lazy and with school starting, too tired to update. so i will briefly summarize: Leaving La paz, i went to Copocabana, the city of lake titicaca. the 3 hour bus ride is scenic and not bad. there are plains with mountain tops in the distance. this city is small and not much happening. but overall, it was lovely. The highlight was eating fresh fish from the lake. the lake itself is amazing. being so high in altitude you really have to take things slow. i spent 1.5 days on isla del sol. this island is where the incas say the sun ... read more

So much has happened in the last week I haven´t had the time to update as I would have liked, sorry for the delay. My last week in Cusco was spent laying in my hostal fighting with all my might and a few prescription drugs (that you can get by just walking into a drug store and telling them that your throat hurts) to ward off the cold that was threatening to keep me from hiking the Inca Trail. By Thursday I was feeling much better and able to get up and walk slowly about town making plans for after Machu Picchu. Mike flew in early Friday morning and we spent the day wondering around town, visiting the market and just hanging out. That evening we had our briefing for the trip and we were told ... read more

It had to happen sooner or later. Graham started feeling a bit stomachy about 10 minutes over the Peru-Bolivia border and spent a couple of days dashing between bed and bathroom. I got a lesser bug two days later. Neither of us were horrendously ill, but it wasn´t very pleasant. We ended up staying a lot longer than anticipated on the shores of Lake Titicaca. On a not unrelated note, Titicaca, we learned, is pronounced Titichacha (like the ch in ´loch´). In the local Aymara language it means stone puma. And it seems everyone has a good laugh about tourists pronouncing it wrong. ´Caca´means the same in any language. The Peruvians argue Bolivia is the ´caca´ side and Bolivians argue the other way. From our experience it would seem the Peruvians have got it right. But ... read more

Wednesday we had reservations on the 8am train from Cusco to Puno, on the shore of Lake Titicaca. Amy woke me at 7am, I was still drunk from the previous night´s clubbing. I slept the first few hours of the journey missing some amazing scenery. Of course, there was plenty more to come. The train travelled really slowly taking 10 hours to reach Puno. The same journey by bus is only 6 hours! Much classier than the bus ride though. We watched the mountains pass by in comfort, ate good food (although a bit expensive) and read our books. Stopped at a station in the middle of nowhere around 12 to stretch our legs. There was a small market selling jumpers, hats, water, chocolate, empanadas, etc. Despite the altitude it wasn´t cold but it snowed briefly! ... read more

Naslednji dan smo pa postartali. ok so we were on the train and when we had all woken up they put the tv and music back on for us. a guy came round selling the bright pink yoghurt but we declined! Caz came out with a random comment that we were going backwards, she couldn't undersatnd why everyone laughed as we had been going backwards for the whole journey! when we go to the station we had to get taxis to the bus station where we got the bus to la paz. we checked into our hotel and all had much needed showers as we had not all braved them in uyuni as those who did said they were cold! the shower was really good! we then had to all go and put laundry in as we had pretty much been ... read more

After some hectic days, we finally arrived to La Paz, the worlds highest capital (which is not really the capital... anyways... and we being an American girl and two French brothers - great travel companions). Before this dazzling city I had the opportunity to visit the Uros people, living on the floating islands made out of reed in lake Titicaca, Copacabana (no, not in Rio) and the Sun Island, where, according to the Incas, the sun was born. These are all beautiful and worth visiting places, but still quite crowded with tourists. I also had the opportunity to try one of the local dishes - al paca (lama), which was, to my big surprise, really good. The second day in La Paz was spent biking down "the worlds most dangerous road" (or if you prefer "the ... read more
