Amy left the beginning of the week to head back to the States so I am once again on my own. This past week has been super relaxing and the warm weather and sunshine have been a nice change. After rafting in Futalafu we came north to the small surf town of Pichilemu. The coast was beautiful and we were blessed with a small apartment where the owner spoke English and made us amazing meals almost every night. After a day or two of laying on the beach we decided that we would try our hand at a new sport and take surf lessons. So the next morning we suited up and were sent out to the beach with our instructor (who had never taught a lesson before but was the only one who spoke enough ... read more

Tomorrow will complete our month in paradise, we leave the Chilean region of Futaleufu and we begin to head north hopefully to warm weather, beach and sunshine. The past month has been full of beautiful scenery, amazing experiences and pastries (Argentina has tons of them!). While I will let the pictures do most of the talking on this blog here is a brief itenary of what has happened over the last month. - Bariloche, eating lots of chocolate and hiking - El Bolson, a beautiful little hippy town with more hiking and a great little craft fair. - Puerto Madryn where we spent a day whale watching and another trying to make it work to go see the penguins (which didn´t work out but we have one more chance in the next day or two, I´ll ... read more

It has been a while since I updated and I apoligize to those of you who have reminded me, so here is a brief summary of what has been going on in the last month. After leaving Boliva I headed to Argentina where I stopped over in the town of Salta for a few days rest. Coming from Boliva Argentina feels like Europe and it has taken me a few days to adjust but the friendliness of the people, the warmer climate and the Dulce de Leche have all helped speed the process along. Once rested and thawed out I took a bus down to the Iguazu Falls. Considered by some to be the most amazing water falls on earth the beauty of the place is just breathtaking. The park around the falls is full of ... read more

So my last week has been spent traveling from Cochabumba to the Salar de Uyuni, it was an amazing experience and here is some of what I learned. 1. That I can survive a 10 hour, window seat bus ride in below freezing weather with only a teeshirt, jeans and a fleece. When I left Cochabumba the weather was amazing and warm, forgetting that the Lonley Planet guide decribes Uyuni as ¨frigid¨I didn´t pull the additional layers out of my backpack, and boy did I pay for that mistake. 2. That I will never again ride a bus in South America without a blanket and at least two additional layers. 3. That pan (a large roll with a little cheese on top) and a package of chocolate chip cookies can make a very tasty and filling ... read more

James 1:27 "Pure and lasting religion in the sight of God our Father means that we must care for the orphans and widows in their troubles, and refuse to let the world corrup us" The last three weeks I have been in Cochabamba working with Mike and Bonnie Timmer and their family as they minister to orphaned and abandoned children in Bolivia. It has been an amazing experience getting the chance to see how God is using their family and blessing their work in this much needed ministry. Three years ago the Timmers began construction on their first orphanage. Partnering with a local church, the vision of the Timmers organization, IOU, is to provide a Christian family environment for the children who are in need of a home. As a result their orphanages are small homes ... read more

So much has happened in the last week I haven´t had the time to update as I would have liked, sorry for the delay. My last week in Cusco was spent laying in my hostal fighting with all my might and a few prescription drugs (that you can get by just walking into a drug store and telling them that your throat hurts) to ward off the cold that was threatening to keep me from hiking the Inca Trail. By Thursday I was feeling much better and able to get up and walk slowly about town making plans for after Machu Picchu. Mike flew in early Friday morning and we spent the day wondering around town, visiting the market and just hanging out. That evening we had our briefing for the trip and we were told ... read more

A word of advise: If you are ever in Cusco, Peru and you are studying Spanish at the Almulta Shool of Spanish and if you decide to stay with a family and if that family offers you lettuce with tomatoes on it - DO NOT EAT IT. Even if the school has assured you that your family knows what you can and cannot eat and that it is safe to eat what they serve, even if you are trying hard to eat what they serve so that you don´t offend them, even if it just looks so good because it is not potatoes. Don´t do it, I am here to tell you, you will regret it. This has been an odd and somwhat frustrating week for me. The week started off with the regular schedule, booking ... read more

It´s hard for me to believe but one week has already passed, in many ways I feel like I have been here for so much longer. Cusco is a beautiful city, full of cobbleston streets and old Spanish flavor and the air is clear and very, very crisp (I did not bring enough warm clothes and have had to break down and purchase a few other items to keep me warm). Yesterday I was able to visit a few of the churches in the city and see buildings and walls that date back to 9th and 10th century. It is amazing to see how the Inca´s were able to carve perfectly square stones and build walls that have lasted through three major earthquakes by using only small pieces of stone as thier carving tools. Spanish school ... read more

It's basically all done, I'm finished. All that I own is packed away. Everything I will need or use for the next five months is in one, bigger then expected, backpack. I am filled with nervous excitement and eager anticipation as I try to image what the next five months will hold. Hopefully it will be nothing and everything like what I am expecting. I guess only time will tell....... read more
