At last I am warm again, the only slight disadvantage is that I can't enjoy it fully because I'm actually working, as a volunteer in a wild animal refuge in the Bolivian jungle... ...I'm behind on my blogs, so the plan is to bring you all upto date about where I am now, and then go back and fill in the gaps when I have more time later. Means that there will be a confusing time distortion, but I trust that you will all be able to cope without too many problems. After a week in the Altiplano, in freezing temperatures and high altitude, we have eventually found warmth again. Zoe and I arrived in Cochabamba, Bolivia after a nightmare journey from Uyuni. The bus must have been built in the early 70s, and had NO ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » Coroico August 13th 2006

So, as you may have already guessed, its confession time about our sunny little jaunt into Coroico. The bicycle ride that I mentioned in the previous entry was actually a bicycle ride down The World's Most Dangerous Road (no exaggeration, it was recently voted that again in a British magazine). The road is the main route between La Paz and Brazil so it gets pretty busy with trucks and buses and its actually only big enough for one car in most places. Last week a bus went over the side and 50 people died and our friend Kat told us when she did it about 2 weeks ago one of the cyclists fell off the side and broke her nose and ankle. Insane? Yes I thought we were when we started to consider it. We set ... read more

After flying back to La Paz, I took a bus directly to Oruro. Was very lucky that this was a good connection with the train to Uyuni, as the trains only run on certain days and apparently the bus journey is a rough option. Arrived at Uyuni at 3am in the morning! I just love arriving in a strange place in the middle of the night, in the freezing cold, on my own and without a hotel reservation...fantastic. Luckily I found two girls who had a reservation at the same hostel I was thinking about. We all hopped into a taxi and paid him a ridiculous amount to drive us about a block to the hotel.. Standing in the street and knocking on the locked door of the hostel for about 5 minutes until they finally ... read more

Got to be up for seven thirty to get ready. Damn only five thirty so I have two more hours left. Two hours of sleep left though I knew I wouldn’t get any of it as I was too excited and nervous about what was to happen when I did get up. So the hours turned by slowly as I uncomfortably twisted in my bed, listening to the clock on the wall rhythmically tick the seconds by. All this time my head was filled with the thought of the task of climbing a 6088 metre mountain, having never been this high before I was worried mainly due to the expected lack of oxygen and my asthma but that wasn´t going to stop me getting to the top. Excepting bad weather I would be there at 6:30am ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz August 12th 2006

Ola! Well, it´s been a CRAZY coupla days some of which I´ll discuss here, some of which I´ll be happy to tell you in detail when you´re planning your next holiday and are considering using GAP travel. So, we got to La Paz Boliva after a strange but actually pretty uneventful border crossing. It´s the first time I´ve had to get out of the vehicle and walk across. I´m also convinced that border crossing guys are bored and angry with their jobs and so just for kicks they make sure to stamp your passport on any page OTHER than the one you´ve opened for them. In fact, I think it´s a game and they get more points for stamping right over the other cool stamps you´ve got. Anyway...on to La Paz. What a crazy city. Big. ... read more

La Paz has been great, and certainly one of the best cities I´ve visited. Amazing restaurants (RamJam especially), interesting museums, tons of history and a spectacular geographical setting. I will miss the constant chatter of the micro busses passing with the incoherent Bolivian screaming the various locations his ride services. Una boliviano, una boliviano, plaza Isabella, san Francisco, prado…ah the memories. It´s the best way to get around town, super cheap and very safe. After the downhill biking, I opted for some uphill trekking, and most logical option was to attempt the 6,088m Huayna Potosi, not far from La Paz. I booked a tour which included all the necessary gear (cramp-ons, ice axe, gore pants, gators, mountaineering boots, gloves, fleece), experienced guides, and a roof versus a tent over my head for the two nights (no ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » Copacabana August 12th 2006

The short time I spent in Bolivia was packed full of action. Not bad since for some reason it was never on my itinery to begin with. Copacabana - not to be confused with the one in Brazil. I crossed the Bolivian border at Yunguyo and made a stop in Copa because of the great reports i´d heard from other travellers. The main action occurs when busloads of tourists arrive and flock to the islands on Lake Titicaca, such as Isle del Sol and Isle de la Luna. Can´t comment on these as I was all islanded out after my Puno island hopping. The town is quite pleasant but quiet while the tourists are on the islands. However there is a lot of lakeside activity in the afternoon with paddle boats, sail boats, beachside restaurants (all ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Beni Department » Rurrenabaque August 12th 2006

After looking at a couple of the tour deals in La Paz we decided to fly to Rurrenabaque and book a Pampas tour directly from there. We booked a 3 day Pampas tour and set off the next day in a 4 wheel drive with the driver, our Chilean guide, "Nikos", and a few other tourists. Oh yeah, the night before we went to the Moskitto Bar, which is full of gringos. Was privilaged to hear one Irishman´s account of his extra long jungle trip in which some freak weather occurred which eventually led to the death by drowning of an 18 year old guide in front of his eyes. The matter-of-fact way in which he related this tragedy to us, all the while enjoying his steak and ships, was kind of sick. Thought i would ... read more

Before I start, some people have mentioned that they have only seen one of the last three blogs. That was because I posted them all on the same day so you may not have scrolled through them all. Just click on the previous/next journal to view them all! So, onto the biggest and highest salt flats in the world, the Salar de Uyuni. The flats sit at a lofty 3653m and blankets an amazing 12,000sq km. It was part of a prehistoric salt lake which covered up most of southwest Bolivia. When it dried up it left one massive pot of SAXO! Its probably the most surreal place on earth we´ve ever been (and if you´ve been to Bridgend, thats saying something!) and the opportunity to take all sorts of weird photos are endless.
