hey guys. so quick update on my travels. i caught a 24 hour bus ride from floripa to buenos aires. i planned it perfectly to arrive in BA and have 6 hours to spare before i caught my plane to la paz, bolivia. well, the bus broke and we had to switch buses 5 times. needless to say, i missed my plane. was stuck in BA for 3 days ( which if you have to be stuck somewhere, is not a bad place) and finally got a seat. well, this plane ended up being 4 hours late. did not arrive in la paz until 2:45am, my hostel gave away my room, and luckily found a room 2 streets away. it was then that i found out that someone from the airlines (LAB for those interested) broke 2 ... read more

Most sane people do just a 2 to 3 days tour into the jungle, but in such a tour you stay in the same camp all the time, and unlikely to experience much. Thus we've decided to do a 5 day tour! Just before the tour I read Yosi Ginzburg's book - Back from Tuichi, who described his experience of surviving in the jungle for more than 20 days, after loosing his companions. It was amazing to travel in the same places as he did, and see that some of the things remain the same, although most has changed since his travel, some 25 years ago. His descriptions of the jungle were sometimes so accurate and after the tour I could understand much better what he went through, and that he didn't exaggerate at all. In ... read more

We were lucky enough to have time to go back to Uyuni, our first visit being more than we bargained for 6 years ago but that story is for another time. After another long journey from Potosi it was a good feeling to be back somewhere we knew. On first appearences it had not changed a bit. By complete chance we ended up in the hostel that rescued us last time and it was exactly the same - just as cold as well. We had hooked up with an English guy who was going to book a different trip to ours - he was so indecisive I couldn't work out how he had got so far away from home by himself! We just wanted to do a day trip back out to the Salt Pans and ... read more

Its me again! I know its Grahams turn but I really liked it in Potosi so I stole this blog off him! My story begins at the border between Bolivia and Argentina ..... God, what a nightmare! Our book said that it was open 24hrs so we planned to get there with plenty of time to catch the 8am bus to Potosi. Of course, we got there and it was closed. After an overnight bus the last thing that we wanted to do was wait an hour outside in sub zero temps. I thought I was going to die!! It was bloody fffreeeezing!! Brrrr .... Now, work this one out .... Bolivia open their side at a different time!! Another hr wait, this time in no mans land. Seriously, I was going to die!! We eventually ... read more

Rurrenabaque is a little tropical town, really tranquil, and is totally different from the Altiplano high mountain area of La Paz. Cars are not common here, and people usually travel by 2 wheels - bikes or motorbikes. It lies in Bolivia's amazon basin, and from here people organize pampa and jungle tours to see some nature and wildlife. The way I got to Rurrenabaque was not unusual - an airplane. What was unusual was it's size - it was definitely the tiniest airplane I've ever flown in - just for 19 passengers. The airfield in Rurrenabaque was interesting as well, as it was not of concrete but of grass! In Rurrenabaque, besides the jungle and pampa tours (about which I'll add a separate entry) I've also enjoyed canopy, which is basically an omega from one tree ... read more

Going back to Bolivia was quite exciting and after a couple of months of relatively easy travel it was going to be quite a shock! We crossed the border and instantly everything was different - but in a good way. This is South America and Bolivia is unique. We spent the day waiting for our overnight bus to Potosi. Only a couple of hundred kilometres but it was going to take us about 8 hours. The roads were exactly as they had been 8 years ago - terrible. The bus journey wasn't the worst but certainly not comfortable. We arrived in the dead of night to a deserted Potosi. It was absolutely freezing and we really struggled to find anywhere to stay. We eventually settled on a hotel but were given the most awful room you ... read more

We spent about 9 days in Arequipa, Peru. It´s Peru´s 2nd largest city after Lima and has a very comfortable feel. We found a great small hotel (they´re called hostal´s here) with a quiet feel, beautiful gardens and an easy walk to the city center. Next, we found the street with the good Italian restaurant that the Brit in Puno referred us to and settled in to tour some sites in town. First was the Santa Catalina convent that was closed to outsiders for 400 years. Just incredible how a young life can be directed due to the social mores of the day. It was the second daughter or son that was sent to a religious order, with no questions asked, for life. Oh, and you were only able to speak during needlepoint sessions once a ... read more

17 July After a few hours sleep due to our rather late arrival into Uyuni we were up with the idea of spending the day organising a trip into the area around the town. Our first job was to be booking our room for an extra night but we found out that we could book a trip at the reception and promptly did (I´m purposly being vague about the trip here by the way). Anyway, we booked our trip which was due to leave at 11am which gave us a little over an hour to sort ourselves out. This left us getting a rushed breakfast, changing some US dollars into Bolivianos (far too many thanks to me despite Alex protesting), getting some food and getting our passports stamped to exit Bolivia as we would be crossing ... read more

We ended up spending far more time here than we intended and found out about the inefficiency of the bolivian air transport system in depth. Well, not just the air transport system!! La Paz and its surrounding areas are not the greatest on earth but it did the job as a base to discover Bolivia in a very short time. It was also cheap as chips!!! The first stop in Bolivia was Copacabana, definitely nothing like the one we were to visit later!!! It was in fact a replica of Puno but without Inka cola and moderately better beer. We only visited here so that we could journey to isla del sol on the lake which was as beautiful as Taquille, if a little different. We vistited as part of a package with a hotel ... read more

Hey everyone, I'm back from Lago Titicaca and getting ready to go on my next trip on Wednesday. It took about 10 hours to get to the main port of the lake because I took a tourist bus and we stopped at several sites along the way. In Puno, the main port, I didn't have the greatest of experiences, but the lake was incredible. Early Saturday morning we started out on a boat and headed to the Uros Floating Islands. The Uros indians live on floating "islands" made by hand from totora reeds. As we walked along our little island (there are about 45 total) it would rock back and forth and you could actually feel the movement! After a while we got back on the boat and headed to Amantani Island, about 4 1/2 hours ... read more
