Leaving La Paz was not as easy as we had thought it would be. Firstly our alarm was somehow accidentally turned off instead of snoozed, then when we did manage to get out of the hostel, the town was packed with locals who had turned out for the Independance Day parade. What was supposed to be a direct walk to the bus station turned into a maze as we twisted and turned to avoid marching straight through the parade. Thankfully our local knowledge picked up during our wanderings in Paz proved invaluable and we made it to the station in one piece. Sanandita 18. - 21. Juni 2009 Jetzt mach ich mich bereits zum dritten Mal auf nach El Chapare um 4 Tage in Sanandita zu verbringen. Diesmal fahr ich aber nicht als Tourist, sondern um Gespräche und Interviews mit den Gemeindemitgliedern zu führen. Wir sind zu dritt, Cynthia will sich mit dem Lehrer der Dorfschule und den Kindern unterhalten um ihr Alkoholpräventionprojekt vorbereiten zu können. Und in letzter Sekunde springt noch Adel, ein Ägypter, der in Australien lebt und für ein Jahr durch Lateinarmerika reist, auf unser Trufi auf. Ich bin ganz froh, dass auch ein Tourist mit ist, so kann ich gleich mit meinen Touristeninterviews anfangen. Prinzipiell ist die Zeit in Sanandita extrem chillig. Jetzt bin ich seit circa einem Monat hier in Cochabamba - Zeit, eine kleine Zwischenbilanz aufzustellen :) Wie die meisten schon wissen, wurde mir in der ersten Woche meine Tasche geklaut, samt Digicam, Diktiergerät, Handy, USB-Stick, Bankomatkarte… Der Kulturschock hat mich kurzzeitig etwas überrumpelt, als mir meine Tasche geklaut wurde, ich hab dann aber beschlossen, meinen Frust beim Weggehn zu ertränken - hat ganz gut funktioniert, mit 1,5l Flaschen Bier um 1,20 Euro. Als ich dann noch bolivianisches Kniffeln gelernt habe, war ich wieder versöhnt und als ich um 4 Uhr morgens vom Taxi in mein Zimmer gestolpert bin, war der ganze Frust vergessen :) Jetzt hab ich mir auch endlich wieder eine Digicam gekauft und habs endlich geschafft, ein paar Fotos von der Stadt zu machen um euch einen Eindruck von dem Leben hier ... read more

I am now in Cochabamba, a few hours bus ride from the animal reserve. I haven´t felt so out of place on this trip so far. Apparently not many tourists come here as there is not much to see, so for the locals to see a gringo is strange. Walking down the street people stare at me; they find me just as interesting as I find them! Mostly the older people, they stare at me and I stare right back, both of us analyzing the differences between us. So far I think I´ve seen 3 other people who are not bolivian. Days 10 - 23: Iquique (Chi), San Pedro de Attacama (Chi), Uyuni (Bol), Potosi (Bol), Sucre (Bol), Cochabamba (Bol) Executive Summary Status: Alive but on the run Current location: Cochabamba, Bolivia Notable incidents: Not so thermal thermal baths; budgetarily damaging trip through San Pedro de Attacama; fantastic trip through the Uyuni salt flats despite worst night’s sleep ever; narrow escape from Bolivian law enforcement officials in Uyuni (resulting in current fugitive status); and the bus ride from hell!
