My Love

So we left Sucre with heavy hearts. We´d loved what is said to be Bolivia´s most beautiful city, one of its two capitals along with La Paz. We then embarked on one of the unpleasant Bolivian bus journeys from Sucre to Santa Cruz, which took about 15 hours overnight. We were the only gringos on the bus, travelling on the worse roads imaginable. Needless to say, we got no sleep, the bus smelt constantly of sweat and urine and the roads made it feel like being on a tame rollercoaster/bad airplane turbulance. Not fun. Santa Cruz was a bit of a disappointment, but in hindsight I guess it was because we didn´t explore it enough. It´s said to have the best shopping, nightlife and restaurants in Bolivia. We just didn´t venture far with little time to ... read more

I believe I left off at the point of arrival in Cochabamba. I wasn´t in the best mood, due to hardly any sleep, and I kept thinking "I left Sucre to get on a cockroach-infested bus with the devil at the wheel to come here?" Cochabamba is pretty much a big city and that is it. There is nothing particularly special to do, apart from get a cable-car up a hill to look at a big statue of Christ (five centimetres taller than the one in Rio de Janiero. Brilliant). We dutifully went up in the cable-car, looked at the Christ, took some photos then headed back to our hostel for a lovely little siesta. Siestas are the best thing in the world I have decided! Now I am currently back in Sucre I have a ... read more

Hola Mis Amigos! So I left off in Sucre, which I was enjoying very much, to continue the trip up to Cochabamba. This bus ride was officially the worst bus ride ever! I am aware that I still have another three months to go and will enounter numerous other buses, but I genuinely cannot imagine anything worse than this. I have yet to experience a good bus journey in Bolivia. The bus from Cochabamba to La Paz comes a very close second to this one! We arrived at the bus station and checked our backpacks in with the bus company, and were waiting downstairs by the bus, when a very rotund man began throwing our backpacks down two flights of stairs to another guy waiting at the bottom (he, oddly, was wearing a Vauxhall jumpsuit, clearly ... read more

For this eventful day we headed to Bolivia with our new Brazilian friend, Leiga, where she had heard there was going to be a ritual to welcome the New Year. Once across the Peruvian border into Bolivia, we went took a boat to Isla Del Sol: The Island of the Sun. This island is on Lake Titicaca, the highest lake in the world, and is an ancient Incan place of worship, with numerous temple ruins still remaining on the island. The island is very dramatic. It rises steeply out of the water and you can hike up and over the hills to the other end in about 4-5 hours. We did this hike on our second day and we were just blown away by the beauty of the landscape, with its inviting beaches, grassy hillsides, the ... read more

The national park of Torotoro is in the centre of Bolivia, 138km from the city of Cochabamba. Few tourists make the trip (it wasn't even in our guide book) as a public bus only runs on Thursdays and Sundays. The fact that it is so remote was one of the biggest attractions for us. We caught the 6am bus from the outskirts of Cochabamba. The bus was packed with locals returning to Torotoro after the weekend market, most were chatting to each other in Quechua. When the seats were occupied, the aisle filled with people sitting on sacks of corn, bundles of sticks, crates of god knows what and everything but the kitchen sink - that was on the roof! As usual my knees were jammed into the seat in front, my penance for being tall. ... read more

A familiar logo caught my eye. A poster in the window of a bank in the centre of Cochabamba. I double-backed for a closer look. It was advert for Special Olympics. My first involvement with Special Olympics was at the National Games in Ireland back in 2002 and I´ve been a volunteer ever since. Now travelling in South America I find out the National Games of Bolivia were taking place in the very same city from tomorrow? It was not to be missed. A quick change to our travel plans and we´re set...we are going to the Games! As soon as we entered the sports hall that was to host the Opening Ceremony, I sensed the buzz of excitement in the air. I instantly recognised the infectious enthusiasm that surrounds anything to do with Special Olympics. ... read more

Kurzzeitig erinnert es mich ... read more
