South America » Peru » Piura » Máncora April 9th 2010

Hola mis amigos! From Huanchaco, which I was sad to leave behind, we headed further up the coast to Máncora, a little surfing party town close to the border with Ecuador. We took an overnight bus there, which would have been fine had it not been for the grade A snorer sitting behind me on the bus. Still, it is far nicer travelling on those long buses with friends than on your own, so I would rather be on the bus with some travel buddies and The Snore King than by myself on a peaceful one! We arrived early in the morning, hopped into a couple of mototaxis (like a motorised rickshaw) which took us to a few, equally bad, B&Bs. One advertised an "open water feature" which was essentially a stagnant pool right outside the ... read more

South America » Peru » La Libertad » Huanchaco April 8th 2010

I thought I would leave Trujillo in its own little blog entry rather than combine it with Huanchaco as they are both such different places, and the Santa Cruz trek was a long old read before that! So we arrived at Casa Suiza, which is a really nice, sociable hostel with a cool little roof terrace. We checked-in, dumped our backpacks in our dorm and swiftly changed into bikinis (well, not James, obviously) and hit the beach. It was so nice to enjoy some relaxing beach time after the trek, and Huanchaco is good for surfing, so we chilled out on the beach watching the surfers and enjoying the rays. That night we met up with some Aussies that Tristan (who was now in Lima) knew in Huanchaco, but were quite tired after the night of ... read more

South America » Peru » Trujillo April 8th 2010

This is only a little blog as we had just the one night in Trujillo. Continuing from where I left off in Huaraz... Dana, James and I boarded an overnight bus to Trujillo the day after returning from the trek, and arrived fairly early to a barrage of taxis clamouring for attention. We asked about a hostel that was in the Lonely Planet and the taxi driver told us it was closed, and recommended another one. I had heard about these scams to take backpackers to hostels they earn commission for, so we came close to calling him a liar and insisted he take us to the address we had. Unfortunately, he was right, and we all felt suitably terrible! We got out of the taxi, however, and went for a wander to find a different ... read more

South America » Peru » Ancash » Huaraz April 3rd 2010

Hola Chicos y Chicas! So, continuing on from departing Lima...I arrived early into Huaraz to clouds, rain and the cold. It was a far cry from the polished surface of Miraflores and the heat. Luckily I was being picked up by my hostel or you have to run the gauntlet of taxi drivers, tour operators and micro drivers. Even at 6.30 in the morning they are out in force! I had a fairly embarassing exit from the bus, though. I had bought a bottle of water to take with me which I had yet to realise was ´con gas´ (fizzy). So I opened it up after it had been rolling around in the overhead compartment all night and completely soaked the back of the guy in front of me in the baggage queue. Needless to say, ... read more

South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Miraflores April 1st 2010

Hola Amigos! I apologise for the delay in my travel blogging, the past couple of months since I got to Peru have not only been hugely busy, but have absolutely flown by! From when I arrived in Lima up to the present moment (I'm in Santa Marta in Colombia), I've done two treks, the first in the Cordillera Blanca in Peru among some of the most beautiful scenery, the second I just came back from, in the Colombian jungle. I've chilled on the beaches of northern Peru, met some amazing people to travel Peru with, paid Quito a flying visit, and am currently working my way along the Colombian coast. So on the 1st March I flew from La Paz to Lima, largely to bypass southern Peru and the areas affected by the floods. My main ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Chuquisaca Department » Sucre February 28th 2010

Hola Mis Amigos! I believe I left off on arrival in Sucre after another Bolivian bus journey that would have changed my opinion of Bolivian buses if it weren´t four hours late because it kept stopping every now and again for an hour to let the chicken/hamburger/bread and egg sellers on board! Still, I was just very happy to be back in Sucre and have a couple of weeks of Spanish lessons and to catch up with Vicky from Trailfinders (not her legal title). So I headed to a hostel I had booked just for one night to settle back into Sucre, before doing some shopping around other hostels that afternoon. I found a really nice little place called ´Hostal Pachamama´ with a lovely older Bolivian couple running it. It had a nice garden area for ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz February 20th 2010

Hola mis amigos! Muchas gracias for continuing to check out my blog, greatly appreciated! So, La Paz. My first impression of the city was from the window of a bus through a sick person´s haze! But it seemed like an absolutely massive city. As stated before in my previous blog, I was too ill to do anything on the day we arrived other than watch The American Office (not as good as the British original I have to say), drink Gatorade and lie curled up in the foetal position! But the following day (Sunday) I was feeling a bit better, managed to eat some breakfast and went for a little walk down the road. I didn´t get too far, seeing as I hadn´t eaten anything for 2 days other than the banana I had that morning, ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Cochabamba Department » Cochabamba February 16th 2010

I believe I left off at the point of arrival in Cochabamba. I wasn´t in the best mood, due to hardly any sleep, and I kept thinking "I left Sucre to get on a cockroach-infested bus with the devil at the wheel to come here?" Cochabamba is pretty much a big city and that is it. There is nothing particularly special to do, apart from get a cable-car up a hill to look at a big statue of Christ (five centimetres taller than the one in Rio de Janiero. Brilliant). We dutifully went up in the cable-car, looked at the Christ, took some photos then headed back to our hostel for a lovely little siesta. Siestas are the best thing in the world I have decided! Now I am currently back in Sucre I have a ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Cochabamba Department » Cochabamba February 16th 2010

Hola Mis Amigos! So I left off in Sucre, which I was enjoying very much, to continue the trip up to Cochabamba. This bus ride was officially the worst bus ride ever! I am aware that I still have another three months to go and will enounter numerous other buses, but I genuinely cannot imagine anything worse than this. I have yet to experience a good bus journey in Bolivia. The bus from Cochabamba to La Paz comes a very close second to this one! We arrived at the bus station and checked our backpacks in with the bus company, and were waiting downstairs by the bus, when a very rotund man began throwing our backpacks down two flights of stairs to another guy waiting at the bottom (he, oddly, was wearing a Vauxhall jumpsuit, clearly ... read more

South America » Bolivia February 10th 2010

Luckily, Sucre was just a two hour drive from Potosí, so we took two taxis there rather than a local ´chicken bus´, so called because you are very likely to have a cage of chickens plonked on your lap! It was 20 Bolivianos more each (the equivalent of 2 quid), and with The Beast (my obese backpack) to contend with, taxis were welcome! Arriving in Sucre, we all breathed a sigh of relief. It was beautiful. A far cry from the dusty streets of Uyuni, and the chilly, narrow alleyways of Potosí, Sucre felt warm and welcoming! White buildings with terracotta roofs, green parks, and the lovely Plaza 25 de Mayo. Plus, nice cafés and bars, local fruit markets and snack stalls, to cater for the large student population in Sucre. Can you tell I liked ... read more
