Before we finish this trip, there was no doubt in our minds that we needed a healthy dose of jungle fever to satisfy our cravings...so off we went into the depths of the Bolivian Amazon. Over half of Bolivia is located in the Amazon Basin although most people never consider Bolivia to be on the top of their list for jungle adventure. We went in head first and were well rewarded with a good idea of what comprises of jungle life in the amazon. So after hearing of how heinous the 18hr bus journey is down and out of the Andes on a single lane dirt road, we decided to get there via riverboat from a gold mining town called Guanay. This place is like Dawson City, Yukon was after the goldrush left it with ... read more

...Trust me its paradise...this is where the hungry come to feed...for ours is a generation that circles the globe in search of something we havent tried before...so never refuse an invitation, never resist the unfamiliar, never fail to be polite and never outstay your welcome...just keep your mind open and suck in the experience and if it hurts, you know what, it was probably worth it...you hope and you dream but you never believe that something is gonna happen for you, not like it does in the movies and when it actually does, you expect it to feel different, more viseral, more real...i still believe in paradise and now at least i know its not some place you can look for...cause its not where you go, its how you feel for a moment in your ... read more

So after the luxury of pools and saunas, and the relaxation of a decent bed and good food, it was time again to head onwards for the next episode: Rurrenabaque. By now we know that this is spanish for "very far away". There were some choices with regards to getting there. By plane, which would mean heading back to La Paz first, and weather forcast was rain and more rain, so no guarantee the small aircraft would be able to land on the grass pitch they call airport at Rurre. Second option was an overnight bus ride. Problem one is that you hardly see anything of course at night. Problem 2 was that we'd heard far too many stories of the bus taking more than 20hours (instead of the promissed 15), getting stuck in the mud, ... read more

When we learned that our flight to Rurrenabaque was to be canceled for the third time, we lost patience and decided to take the much longer and also adventurous bus ride there. Distances or rather driving times are mind boggling in Bolivia. A bus ride to Rurrenabaque generally takes 18 hours, while flying the same distance takes just 30 minutes. Well, in our instance, it took 33 hours to get there. The journey was truly spectacular, taking us first through high mountains and later, as we descended into the river valley, through the jungle. The road we took was declared as the most dangerous road in the world, claiming lives of dozens people every year. It is narrow, windy, and overused. As we entered deeper in the jungle, it was obvious why the flights had ... read more

After our adventures on the Island of the Sun, we took a four hour bus to La Paz. La Paz, sitting in a 5km wide canyon, is a visually stunning city. It sprawls up the steep sides of the canyon in a maze of busy, noisy, dirty and polluted roads. Like a huge angry stain, the city spreads out over the lip of the canyon and on to the surrounding plains. We were a bit freaked out by the drive into La Paz, as we made our way through the slums at the top of the canyon we were greeted by shoe shine boys dressed in black balaclavas shouting angrily towards our bus. It turns out that these guys wear this gear to hide their identity as they are ashamed of their profession, although they support ... read more

Hey guys, I´m writing as I sit in the internet cafe bright pink from the Bolivian sun and and bright red from the mosquitoes who had hours of fun feasting on my pasty english complexion!! I´ve really enjoyed my time in Bolvia...although the stories before you get here, warn you off some what, I´ve found this place, all a lot more civilised and peaceful than anywhere else in peru or chile that I have seen. I crossed over the border from Chile on three day keep tour into the desert and salt plains...they were spectacular...and the photographs simply don´t capture the variety of vivid colours that could be seen all in the one place. Dusty roads, 6 smelly boys and -20 temperature at night made me glad to get back to civilisation but a priceless ... read more

It felt like I couldnt go anywhere more contrasting...from the snow and cold temperatures at 6000m to 150m above sea level, 40 degree heat and 98% humidity!! We headed to rurrenabaque straight from La Paz )only 40mins away) on a scarily tiny plane that isnt so good for anyone that even has a touch of claustrophobia....we made it after taking a nose dive into the amazon!! The lfight was pretty cool, you fly sooo close to the mountains and then the jungle is soooo vast its amazing!! It just scared me a little with the sudden descent in the jungle, felt like we were just hurtling towards the trees but a grassy runway saved the day!! Rurrenbaque is a cute little town in the middle of a vast rainforest, with not much going on apart ... read more

After the delights of our jungle expedition, we decided to stay in Rurrenabaque for an extra day before flying back to La Paz. We hadn´t banked on it being so very hot and humid though - far worse than it was in the jungle - and so we pretty much spent most of the day wilting in our room and catching up on sleep. So much for that idea! In the evening, we hunted around for somewhere cheap to eat and ended up at a little chicken roasthouse where we ate for under 20 Bs instead of the whopping 80 Bs we paid last night. We both tucked into big portions of rice and chips with fried bananas while Glynn also had a big bit of chicken. Well worth the money. While we were wandering ... read more

Friday the 13th. Not the kind of day most normal people would book a flight to the deepest jungles of Bolivia but I guess that means we´re not normal (but you knew that already, right?). In keeping with the spirit of things going wrong on this superstitiously bad day, we had a few setbacks. First off, it was raining so heavily in Rurrenabaque that our flight got postponed and ultimately cancelled owing to the plane not being able to land on a soaking wet runway. Not a problem we thought, we´ll just stay put in La Paz for an extra night. Except that our hostel was fully booked! Thankfully a spot of good fortune came our way when we managed to book into the half decent Hotel Avenida just across the road for 100 Bs ... read more

Woke up this morning for our breakfast call in the mosi net with eaten legs even though i used the net they gave us and my own net as a blanket. We were going snake hunting today so i went searching for some wellies as the boots they gave us were about 10 sizes to small. Eventualy squeezed into the set the owner had to root out(eddy!!). When we left camp it was raining heavy so werent expecting to see much. However we soon spotted kingfishers, eagles and falcons. We then saw a golden eagle which was absolutely massive and spectactular looking. it flew off before i had time to get it on camera. On the way to hunt some snakes we stopped at a lodge were 2 aligators hang around to feed. Our guide Luis ... read more
