A lovely girl we met on the second night in Lima told us that if we went through La Paz we should definitely take a trip to a place called Rurrenabaque and from there do either a jungle or pampas tour. Thanks German-Italian girl! This was amazing. Rurrenabaque is a small town in the Bolivian chunk of the Amazon Basin. We bought a flight from La Paz to Rurrenabaque because someone told us that the bus journey can be anything between 18 and 30 hours and is never fun. This was wimping out to an extent but a 45 minute flight in a 12 seater propeller plane sounded pretty random. We left La Paz at 7am, it was cold, foggy and grey and we were rapped up pretty warm. Within and hour we were stepping off ... read more

We travelled to Rurrenabaque, Bolivia in a tiny 16 seater airplane.... with a crash history to boot. However we landed safely on a dirt runway in the jungle area after a fantastic view of the snow capped Andies. It was quite different then the rest of the country, stinking hot and humid and in the 35deg heat we were still dressed in our warm clothes needed for the cold, high altitude climate we had just left.... so we set off in search of accomodation so we could change. We then went in search of good food, which we thought may be hard after passing only the normal touristy pizza/pasta joints. However, just around the corner, away from the other places we found Casa del Campo. Paul had just fallen sick, so a decent helping of fresh ... read more

We caught an overnight bus to Rurrenabaque, from La Paz - 18 hours. It was a near thing that we got on it. When we booked the bus we were told to catch a taxi half and hour before take off, we caught the taxi over an hour before it was due to leave and 5 minutes before it was due to leave the taxi driver was asking people directions. Quite hair raising being caught in walking pace traffic jams. Anyhow we caught the bus and on board or on the roof go containers of baby chickens, beds, sacks of goods, boxes of stuff, everything you can think of. The bus left about 11 am and we had three toilet stops on the trip. The road was good to start with and then it deteriorated to ... read more

Next up was Rurrenbaque and a tour through the jungle and Pampas region of the Amazon basin. The tour worked out fairly cheap at 25 pound each for a 3 day tour including all food and accommodation. The only other expense was getting there which was either 18 hours on a bus for 7 pound or a 45 minute flight for 50 pound return with the Bolivian Air Force F.A.B for short...Fuerzas Areas Bolivianos! Thunderbirds are go! They had to be safe and reliable! We took the easy option or so we thought! The flight on paper was easy enough, turn up at the airport 30 mins before and than a 45 minute flight and you would be in Rurrenbaque! It turned out to be 8 hours, as we were delayed as it was raining in ... read more

We learnt that if you want to put a crocodile to sleep you lay it on its back and stroke its tummy and very quickly it will be fast asleep! We saw it for ourselves. Our little croc, named Rambo 2 (since our guide was Rambo 1) was fast asleep within seconds, dead still with its legs sprawled out. I wondered if we had killed it, but then our guide called out to little Rambo 2 and woke him from his slumber and he was all wriggly. So there you go!... when you are chased by a crocodile a great defense tactic is to put it to sleep. Though it would probably be a good idea to take into account the size of the croc when you undertake this manoeuvre. We spent three days in the ... read more

The light plane wobbled and headed towards the grass runway. On either side of us were imposing mountains shrouded in jungle and the scene from Air America where Mel Gibson crashes his plane into the undergrowth sprang to mind. I peered into the cockpit, fascinated by the fact that one pilot seemed to be texting on his phone while the other steered us to what would hopefully be a safe landing. We alighted into the thick heat like moviestars and looked about in wonder. Half an hour before we had been struggling for breath at the highest point in La Paz (the airport)- Now we were about to embark on a 3 day trip into the Pampas. The bone crunching 3 hour journey on gravel roads was broken by a quick interlude at the park ... read more

Bussimatka Trinidadista Rurreen kestikin vain vajaat 18 tuntia. Eipa tuntunut paljoa missaan...tai no ehka vahan. Matkalla oli kolme joen ylitysta, joita varten viiden tahden bussimme lastattiin huteran oloisiin puulauttoihin, joita kuljetettiin sitten peramoottorin voimin joen ylitse. Itse tie oli kuoppainen ja polyinen koska paallystetta ei naille kulmille ole viela saatu laitettua. Jopa bussin tavaratilassa olleet rinkat olivat aivan polyn peitossa - Katjalla hiekkaa loytyi myos rinkan sisalta. Bussi saapui Rurrenabaqueen aamulla varhain, eika taalla olleet mitkaan paikat viela auki. Rurre on suosittu paikka aloittaa retki pampalle tai viida... read more

From La Paz we took a short plane ride to Rurrenabaque, a little town on the banks of a river, in the jungle. The plane flies past huge snow capped mountains and feels like it goes downhill the whole way as the landing is so much lower than take off. There was huge temperature difference when we arrived, really hot and humid compared to the chilly La Paz. The town was different to what we had seen elsewhere, as motorbikes were the vehicle of choice. It was a little adventure town with lots of things to do and see. There were more markets and little food joints that were all cheap. We went on a Pampas tour, which involves a two hour 4wd to a river, then a 2 hour canoe ride along the river, ... read more

The bus ride to La Paz from Copacabana is quite an experience. Half way through the journey everyone has to leave the bus to get a boat across a narrow straight of Lake Titicaca while the bus gets on its own boat. The buses boat however isn’t very stable at all and more than once we watched as it tipped all over the place threatening to shed its load and all our stuff with it! Once on the other side however we jumped back on and carried on our merry way. The approach to La Paz is equally as unforgettable; the bus rises over a lip of a canyon revealing an incredible view of the city sprawled all over the floor and rising up the sides, with the snow capped peak of Illimani dominating the background. ... read more
