Michael & Faye Johnson Michael and Faye's Travel Journal

Well...... we're back!

trying to describe the experiences over the past year has been impossible, but I tried! Sadly I ran out of steam on this blog and stopped after Cambodia, after which we spent a month in Vietnam, added another member to the team (Faye's pregnant), spent a week in Hong Kong, then had to scrap our plans of Tibet and Nepal due to recommendations that Pregnant ladies should stay below 3000m, spending the remaining 6 weeks in India!

I'm currently in the process of writing the blogs I missed but it's taking a lot longer than I though so watch this space!

Take care y'all.... till next time!

So… The United States. We count ourselves as being fortunate enough to say that we’re well travelled, so how come the USA or the North American continent for that reason have managed to escape our foot fall? To be honest, there was never anything we wanted to see that was high enough on our ‘list’. There were certainly places on the list, just not high enough to justify spending the money getting there. Faye is pregnant again and was just about to enter her third trimester so it was the perfect time to travel, I’m also being made redundant from work [View Full Entry]

So… The first question you may ask is what possessed us into thinking taking a 6 month old baby half way across the world for a holiday was a good idea? As much as we’ve changed our lives to accommodate Nate (our beautiful son); we also want him to understand that our lives revolve around a passion for travel and his arrival isn’t going to change that. So, that’s our compromise, we pour all our heart and soul into providing a nurturing environment for him to grow up in… he just has to behave on a few long haul flights. The [View Full Entry]

We decided to take a somewhat alternative route into Vietnam as we wanted to visit the mighty Mekong delta first and the best way to see this area of vast rivers and numerous waterways is by boat. From Pnom Penh we took a bus to the waterside town of Neak Luong, and then jumped on a boat for the two and a half hour journey to the border. The border crossing was pretty uneventful, and afterwards we jumped onto a different boat for the Vietnamese side of the journey. This side of the journey was much better as the waterways narrowed [View Full Entry]

Our first challenge on our journey to Cambodia was navigating the border crossing circus at Poipet. As we’d done it before three years ago, we knew what to expect, but it was a shame to see nothing’s changed, as it really gives a terrible first impression of such an amazing country. We caught a public bus from Bangkok to the border town on the Thai side, and then strolled straight past all the touts claiming it’s not possible to get a visa at the border… but of course we could get it through them. Once stamped out of Thailand, we stopped [View Full Entry]

Family reunion.... Asia » Thailand
Chiang Mai Once we’d crossed over the border from Laos, we jumped straight on a bus headed for Chiang Mai, which is sort of the northern capital. We headed there because we have fond memories of the city from a previous visit a few years ago, and we thought it would be a great place to spend Christmas, hopefully keeping us occupied for a few days so we wouldn’t dwell on the fact that we weren’t with family. While we were checking into our hotel, the receptionist asked us if we were going to the Sunday market that night as it [View Full Entry]

Vang Vieng From the Philippines we flew to Bangkok, where we only spent a couple of days catching up with friends who also happened to be in the city. It was great to see some familiar faces, and go beyond the usual where’ve you been, where you going next conversations that we usually only have time for with the majority of people we meet. From Bangkok we caught a bus up to Nong Khai near the Laos border, and crossed over with minimal hassle getting our Visas at the crossing, we then jumped on a Tuk Tuk the last few km [View Full Entry]

Once we landed at Kuala Lumpur, we transferred straight to the main terminal building to ask about flights as we had some choices to make. Our first choice was Japan, and after a few enquiries, we found out it’s the same price to get a return flight to Japan from here as it is from London, so we scratched that off the list. Our next choice was the Philippines, which would require a trip back to the LCCT (low cost carrier terminal) as that’s where all the budget airlines fly from. Instead we decided to spend a day or so [View Full Entry]

Bukit Lawang We caught a short flight from Jakarta to Medan, northern Sumatra, cutting out long overland journey that would be required, but we did as most people do in Medan and passed straight through. We caught a public bus to our next destination, Bukit Lawang and the journey happened exactly as the guide book explained it would, starting with a friendly local asking us about ourselves. From there it turns out he’s going to the same destination and just so happens to be a guide for the trek we plan to do in the national park. Thankfully there was [View Full Entry]
