The days they pass by in slow motion when you resist, and vanish like breath when you let go. Our expedition into the Bolivia have provided Stacy and I a handful of both types of days. Our first hour in La Paz, the highest capital city in the world, resulted in the worst experience with a cash machine ever, but we were still able to book a tiny propplane to the town of Rurrenabaque and a river boat tour in the amazon pampas. Pampas is the equivelant to savanah ecosystems with wide expanses of tall grasses carved up by meandering rivers enshrouded by thick tropical riparian forest. It is these rivers that provided the pathways of our three day tour by a long canoe like boat that was fjorded by outboard and our guide Jamie. These ... read more

No, I wasn't really in Rio Tuichi, but I was pretty close to it. We went to the junges for 3 days in a lodge instead of 5 days in the middle of nowhere, because we heard you don't really see much animals in the jungle, but we did see a tapir and an armadillo. On the first day we visited and indian community in the jungle. It wasn't really what I expected - they wear western clothes, and they collect the entrance fee to the park, but they do live in the middle of the jungle in wooden cabins. Then we got the the lodge, went for a walk up to a nice view point, then for a swim in the river, and then went on a night walk where we saw the aforementioned tapir ... read more

To get to the Western Bolivian Amazon and the town of Rurrenabaque, you can either a) take a 20 hour (if its not raining) bus ride on a dirt road or b) a 40 minute flight. We opted for the flight. Often flights to Rurrenabaque are cancelled due to poor weather and then all the other flights are pushed back for hours or days to fit in the cancelled flights. We met quite a few people in La Paz who were waiting for their flights to be re-scheduled. Luckily our flight to Rurre took off as planned. And the excitement didn't end there. We were flying in a 15 passenger propeller plane over the Andes and their wind gusts and when we got to Rurre...we landed on a grass landing strip. It was a little nerve-wracking, ... read more

I came back from 3 days in the Pampas today. The Pampas is really a big swamp, with lots of animals. On the first day, we got there after a 3 hour drive on rough roads, and took a boat on the river to get to the lodge where we slept. On the way we saw alligators, capybaras (the world´s biggest rodent - the size of a pig), river turtles, and lots of other smaller animals. We slept at the lodge, and it was very hot and humid - just like Tel Aviv, without air conditioning. At night, we went on another boat ride, and saw alligator eyes glowing at night, and the guide even captured a small one for us. On the second day, we went to find anacondas. We marched through the swamp for ... read more

So got to the airport no probs and then boarded our tiny tiny plane. Two people per isle, had to bend double to walk on. Flight was really fun, amazing view going over the Andes, so close to the snow capped mountains, was actually a little scary. Landing was really fun/concerning, weaving through the air down onto a dirt/grass runway. Was feeling pretty sick by the time we´d landed (mainly due to yesterday) and was sooo hot and sticky, even before they opened the door of the plane! Airport left a little to be desired, just a house, was really cool. Rurrenabaque is really cool, good ol´ jungle town. The center is a little touristy but nothing compared to Cuzco. Booked a tour to the Pampas straight away for the next day. Up at 7am, got ... read more

We spent the last 2 days in Rurrenabaque. Yesterday the weather was really bad (heavy rain), so we did nothing. Today we went to the pool, and had a nice time there. Tomorrow we´re going on a 3 day tour of the pampas (swamps where there are lots of animals), and after that we´ll probably go on a 5 day jungle tour. I´m not uploading pictures, because the connection here is very slow. You´ll have to wait until I get back to La Paz.... read more

We finally arrived in Rurrenabaque, after 2 days of waiting for a flight. Our plane was a 20 seat Cessna, and it was quite a bumpy ride, but we arrived safe and sound. It´s hot and humid here, kind of like in Tel Aviv, but it´s a beautiful place, with lots of green around. For some reason not all of us went on the same plane, so hopefully everyone will get here, and we´ll all meet up. We´ll go on a Pampas tour tomorrow or on the day after.... read more

That´s it. Finally our ticket is booked for Rurrenabaque. We are off to the Jungle and Pampas. 2 options to get there. By bus on a long 18 hour trip or fly there on a 45min flight. Flying there was the 1st option until we realised that the flight costs $60us. The bus on the other hand costs $10us. The choice was made for us, we are doing it the hard way. After all, who needs comfort. The following day, we get to the bus terminal and found our bus. Don´t know how to describe it. It´s just bigger than a minibus and 3 times smaller than a normal long distance bus. It is also used as a cargo bus so it was heavily loaded a the top and down low!!! You should´ve seen the horror ... read more

Hello to all, We are still here in Bolivia and after the last blog we headed north to Rurrenabaque to see some wildlife. Rurrenabaque is a town set in the Amazon and it was either at least 20 hours on the bus or a 45 minute flight with the military, so a bit of a no brainer! It was an amazing flight from La Paz over the Andes touching down in Rurrenabaque on a grass runway with the Amazon as the backdrop. After settling in we booked a 3 day pampas tour in the Amazon, we got lucky as there was no-one else in our group so we had the boat and guide to ourselves. The tour company we went with had their own ecolodge which we stayed at for the 3 days, they managed to ... read more

So, next on the list we flew to the Bolivian Amazon Basin. It was quite novel for us to be travelling by plane for once, and it was a bit like flying in a cigar tube with wings - only about 15 seats and you had to almost crawl to your seat it was so tiny! Mind you the views we got over the Cordillera Real range (including the mountain that Richard climbed) was awesome! It really is very dramatic scenery. Before we left La Paz, and also whilst in Rurrenabaque we managed to catch up with Claire from home and her boyfriend James. Again, fantastic to see a face from home and share a beer or two! Once we landed in Rurrenabaque and the door opened it was like being hit by a wall of ... read more
