November 26th 2007

This is it! We are in Lima to visit our friend Luis and after a few days here, we will catch our plane to Europe. Sad moments really even if we have been travelling for 6 months. It´s always too short, isn´t it? We are spending 4 days here, spending some time with Luis, who I didn´t see for almost 4 years and what a welcome we had! We stayed away from the tourist trail, although we have obviously visited Miraflores, Barranco, Chorillos and Central Lima. Lima is charming. Before we got there, we were warned that if we didn´t like La Paz, there is little chance we would like Lima. WRONG! Lima has undergone so much work to keep it green and diverse ( unlike La paz ), lots of parks etc... as well as ... read more

After visiting Machu Picchu, other sites might seem a bit dull to some travellers. How wrong is that! Peru has much more to offer. We are now in the Ica region. Finally after 6 weeks in altitude (2500m to 4000m ), we are going back to a more manageable Nazca which sits at 400m above sea level. We can go for a 100m sprint and not even break into a sweat. Nazca is known for its famous Lines. They are a series of geoglyphs located in the Nazca Desert, a high arid plateau that stretches 53 miles between the towns of Nazca and Palpa on the Pampas de Jumana in Peru. They were created by the Nazca culture between 200 BC and AD 700. There are hundreds of individual figures, ranging in complexity from simple lines ... read more

We have been waiting for this moment for a long time... The mysterious Machu Picchu! Officially declared as one of the New seven Woders of the World ! After arriving in Cusco, we spend the night with our friend Pascale , then we head to a village at the foot of Machu Picchu called "Aguas Calientes". The weather is not that great. Rain comes and goes, so does the sun. We are in a sub tropical region, it´s very humid. We sort everything out for the next day, the visit to Machu Picchu. So today, we spend it hovering around town, and also go the hotsprings. Sounds like a great plan especially as it is raining. Should be a nice contrast! As we get to the medicinal waters, we find that it´s only a series of ... read more

Hola!!! We are in Arequipa... "The White City" as it is nicknamed. One, because most of all buildings were made out of white rock. Two, because it is a very clean city ( as our guide told us ). The second most important city in Peru, it lies in the highlands at the foot of the snow-capped volcano El Misti. Just to give you an idea, Arequipa is surrounded by about 80 volcanoes. Also, our hostel, as well as many other buildings like restaurants, hotels, shops, shopping arcades... have large stickers on their inside walls saying " Zona segurisada en riesgo de seismo" meaning : Safe area in case of earthquakes. Very reassuring! The fact is, historically, when the Incas settled in this area, some 500 years ago, they didn´t know about it! But the city ... read more

We are in Peru.... After crossing the border, we get to Puno, still on the Lake Titicaca. Baring in mind that the lake sits at 3810m above sea level and in some places is about 200km long and 70km wide. So there´s a lot of water. The program here is to visit the floating islandsor The Uros Islands. The Uros people continuously build or maintain islands from reed. Boats are also built from reed. It´s an amazing scenery. Look for yourselves. Also on the program is Taquile island. First stop though, The Uros Islands. 41 entirely manmade floating islands and houses. We visited two. The Islanders still live using methods going back to Pre-Inca times. Much of the Uros' diet and medicine also revolve around these reeds. When a reed is pulled, the white bottom is ... read more

It seems the blogs are coming very fast aren´t they? Well, we have a bit of time ahead of ourselves. Don´t complain! After a safe landing in La Paz airport, we get a taxi to tke us to the bus terminal. Our destination: Copacabana by the Sacred Lake Titicaca. Our last place in Bolivia before we hit the road to Peru. Copacabana is the departure point to Isla del Sol or "Isla Titi KalKa" (Titi=Puma, Kalka=Rock). Sun Island. According to Inca mythology, it is here where the sun god called "Inti" has sent to earth two of his sons. Later they went on to Cuzco and formed the capital Machu Picchu. Along our walk on the island which lasted 3 hours, we went through "La Piedra Sagrada", the Sacred Stone or Stone of Sacrifices as it was ... read more

That´s it. Finally our ticket is booked for Rurrenabaque. We are off to the Jungle and Pampas. 2 options to get there. By bus on a long 18 hour trip or fly there on a 45min flight. Flying there was the 1st option until we realised that the flight costs $60us. The bus on the other hand costs $10us. The choice was made for us, we are doing it the hard way. After all, who needs comfort. The following day, we get to the bus terminal and found our bus. Don´t know how to describe it. It´s just bigger than a minibus and 3 times smaller than a normal long distance bus. It is also used as a cargo bus so it was heavily loaded a the top and down low!!! You should´ve seen the horror ... read more

( Blog from one week ago ) We are at 3700m, and feeling it. we made it to La Paz on an overnight bus from Sucre. Thank god the bus had toilets inside otherwise we wouldn´t have left Sucre for another month. Renata´s only condition to leave Sucre was a bus with a toilet. Understandable! La Paz is sitting very high in the mountains, but unfortunately, it´s still a big city with lots of traffic. Also, it rained a lot which means we didn´t do much here really. Our time in La Paz was spent going to local markets, witches market, the zoo and to the post office to send a parcel back home. Our reason for coming here was that it was the platform to get to The Amazon Basin. Our next destination is Rurrenabaque ... read more

sorry guys, we haven´t been able to update our blog for 2 weeks..... This was the original text ¡¡¡Hola!!!We are now in Sucre, or rather just left Sucre. Our plans here were to visit the Dino paths, go to indigenous villages such as Potolo, Maragua or Tarabuco. Instead of all that, we stayed 5 days in Sucre city visiting the hospital. We pretty much know all the staff, nurses and doctors! Renata managed to catch a food bug which would put her to bed for the next 5 days, shouting and screaming, not getting any sleep and not letting anyone use the bathroom as she was constantly occupying it. I had to go to the neighbours... ( Just joking!) Bolivia is really nice but you do have to be careful when it comes to eating raw ... read more

Hola Chicos y chicas, We are in Potosi, the highest city in the whole wide world.... Altitude sickness: you bet! We are at 4824m above sea level! Say no more. Headaches, stomach cramps, dizziness, temperature, the lot. Your body gets through a lot of sensations. What people do here is chew a lot coca leaves ( yes, the basic raw material that is used for cocaine. And yes, we tried it. It´s perfectly legal, and it doesn´t harm. It´s like you can´t get drunk on eating grapes or drinking grape juice. Even in big quantities. Potosi is a city that was one of the richest in the whole Americas, due its silver mining exploitations. Cerro Rico produces a lot of silver. I mean thousands of tons of it. It´s a mining city. Miners suffer from bad ... read more
