This will be a short one cos im writing 2 weeks late while im sitting in freezing New York which is a lot different than the 40 degree heat in the jungle. We were pretty lucky to even get out to Rurrenbaque cos its rainy season which plays havoc with the grass runway landings. So one sign of rain and no flights. The question on every ones lips was why dont they build a bloody concrete runway and they would never have to cancel a flight?? Thats Bolivia though, no long term sense really. As i said we were lucky and only had a 8 hour delay for our 40 minute flight. We met people who waited 3 days for their flight to leave(the alternative is a 20 hour bus on mucky deathtrap roads) and gave ... read more

Thoroughly bored of pollution, crazy drivers and boozing me and Melissa decided we had to get out of La Paz and be a little productive. The last time i was here i really wanted to climb Mount Potosi which is a measly 6088 metres(2500 off Everest). Its suppose to be one of the most accessible 6000+ metre mountains in the world. We didn't realise how productive we would need to be!! When we signed up for the trip we had to get a fitting for our gear(ice axe, crampons, the lot). It kind of dawned on us then that this wouldn't be a stroll. So off we went to the mountain which was an hour out of La Paz. Our plan was a 3 day 2 nights and the first day was training but 2 Swedish ... read more

Only a short 12 hour bus trip from unuyi to la paz which was actually on a pretty comfy bus considering what i was warning the guys about. Had a bit of bad luck in the bus station though. One of the guys were travelling with Ben went the toilet and while he was gone his bag was robbed. Passport, laptop, the lot. All you can say is its all replaceable, so its all good(I'm not sure he would agree)..... So Loki Hostel (again) for 12 days. No sure my liver is going to handle this. Its a party zone and after 6 days my mediocre Spanish has descended into a farce. We went to the post office and spent an extra hour there mumbling crap and being shouted at (our ignorance)!! To take a break ... read more

December 17th 2008

At the dinner the night before there was a heated discussion as to what time we would leave in the morning for the last day. Some people wanted to leave at 4am to get the sunrise while others(myself included) would rather have a few to many beers and have 4 hours extra in bed. I knew the guides just wanted to leave at 4am to get back earlier and the sunrise wouldn't be that good. So a compromise was made that half would leave at 4am and the rest at 8am. So this meant we got a new guide who was cool, had a great session and got to sleep late, it was perfect. So we headed onto the Salt Flats. Im glad everyone got to see this last cos this is the most spectacular part ... read more

December 17th 2008

After a pretty cold sleep we awoke at 5am(every one of us forgot to set their clocks forward an hour!) we made our way along some really bumpy roads towards the rocks in the desert(i dont know what there called due to the Spanish guide). The cool rock features were created by erosion anyway i know that. Before we got there though our guide and his missus started to prove there worth. First off The guide messed about for about 2 hours in the morning then while annoyed at his girlfriend delaying him 1 minute more started the jeep and with the door open and the baby just lying on the front seat. it was a miracle he didn't fall out. This was nearly too much for Melissa. Then further up the road the driver slammed ... read more

Up early in San Pedro as i once again signed up for the Salt Flat tour. I was hoping that it would be a bit different to the first one i did which was from Unuyi and returned to Unuyi. I knew what to expect and had been warning the guys. Amazing scenery, treacherous roads, shit food, a good chance of horrible accommodation and a guide who doesn't speak English. I was right but it was still all worth it. Up early in san pedro and we had to get a bus to the Chilean border to switch over to our Jeeps. We had to go through immigration and pay a small fee to get in to the national park. If you didn't have the correct change the border guards just decided to charge you a ... read more

With 2 hours of sleep i set off on the 10 hour bus journey. It actually wasn't too bad and was one of the few times i slept for hours on a bus. I was trying to stay awake because the scenery as we drove up into the Andes was so cool. We started to get pretty high are some stages and the altitude was affecting Al pretty bad although i could hardly breathe at some points. After going through the Argentinian side of the border we passed a spectacular volcano before going through the Australian like border(no veggies etc...). San Pedro is a beautiful little town. Melissa was saying this was how she imagined South America. Dusty streets and cowboy hats. The town was also surrounded on nearly all sides by volcano's, both active, dormant ... read more

12 hours up the road we ended up in Cordoba. Its Argentina's 2nd biggest city and it was peeing rain when we arrived. We went to our prebooked hostel which we ended up regretting. It had a terrible vibe for reasons i cant go into. We spent the next 2 days walking around the city. There wasnt much there as far as we could tell and as it was the weekend the streets were deserted. We did visit a cool museum and went to a really cool tango show apart from the cheesy singing!! Its funny how you can have a totally different time to someone else. Met a guy in Salta who was to spend 2 days there and spent 5 and partied every night til dawn. Don't know what we were up to. So ... read more

So we went back to Santiago for 1 night before heading into Argentina to meet up with Al and Kelly. Really looking forward to getting back there as i loved Mendoza the last time. So when the spectacular Andes popped up in the distance i was getting really excited. It was only an 8 hour bus journey and was pretty handy trip. After pulling up in the taxi we hooked up with al and Kelly who were strolling down the path. Its always weird meeting someone from home in the most unlikely place(although we arranged it a month ago). Its reminds you whats good about travelling and just how different it is..... Straight on the booze then(which isnt very different to home). We ended up having an Asado that night(and every other) in the hostel. An ... read more

Only a short trip to valpairaiso out of Santiago. Valpairiso is a smallish fishing village which was pretty cool. The houses were spread all across the mountain and they had cool graffitti all over them. The hostel we got was pretty cool and the owner nice. However the food was shite as it was in Santiago too. Seems the main fare here grease with grease with fried eggs on top of everything. Although you get what you pay for!! Im sure there is nice grub to be found. But anyway due to our save money exit plan and the fact we were meeting al and kelly in Mendoza in 2 days we only stayed 1 night, although i could have stayed a few nights more. We went out on the beer that night but i fell ... read more
