Dedicated to people who like condensed milk. It´s so nice that I think I must share it with you. Dulce de leche! Meaning ssomething like sweet milk in English. It´s a caramel looking thing that is made from condensed milk! Thought it was caramel when I first tried it. Didn´t think I´d like it cos I usually dun like caramel. But as I tasted it, I gradually grown to enjoy the taste. To my pleasant surprise, it´s actually made from condensed milk with some vanilla essence. No wonder I like it :) You can spread it on bread like peanut butter and it goes well with crackers and ice-cream. Our roommate told us that by boiling condensed milk, it´ll turn brown as the sugar caramelised. Sounds simple hur? Think I´ll try to cook it myself when ... read more

First things first: an apology. It appears that David Coleman is not dead after all, although I don´t know how I was expected to know that considering how far away I am. There have also been requests for more extracts from the local guide book to the Chilean island of Chiloe, so here´s an example under the heading ´Popular Medicine': Prepared a tea in a pot without cap is good for the tungs and the cof Or how about this yummy serving suggestion under ´Comidas Tipicas´(typical food): 'La Harina Tostada Sazonada´ The plate with Toasted Fluor with grease and hot water, is another traditional food for breakfast Lastly, this one comes under ´Superstitions of Good Future': When two people widying tie and they touch the tooth pick, means they are going to be midwifes We had ... read more

Found out that there´s a place called Tigre when we went to Chinatown the other day. Our roommate told us that it´s a nice little colonial town and so we decided to go explore. Took a 45min train ride to Tigre. Pretty nice as it passes through the residential area. Also it´s interesting to observe people in the train. It´s amazing to see the variety of stuff people here sell in the train, from pirated Nike handphone pouch, socks to chocolate cookies. Some of them just stuff their merchandise into our hands. If we like it, we´ll pay him after he returns or we just return him the goods. The good thing is, they´re not aggressive and the things are unsually very reasonably priced. With no expectation of what Tigre is like, we were glad that ... read more

After having seen and experienced more of what BA has to offer my verdict on the city has changed. I would have to say that it´s a beautiful, vibrant and exciting city. I still kept thinking I was in a European rather than Argentinian city. The city has many elegant tree lined boulevards and also the architecture is similar to that of the cities in Europe. The buildings here are beautiful. There is an abundance of grand old mansions reminiscent of Europe in the 18th century. Some were immaculately kept while most were slowly crumbling away. This only added to their charm. I fantasized about buying one and restoring it to its former glory. Despite an economy that is in the shit, the locals are immaculately dressed. As a traveler with only a limited wardrobe, I ... read more

Bonjour a tous!

Well, this is my first blog entry. I´ve been here for almost a month and have been meaning to set this thing up since I arrived. I´m in an internet cafe about a block from my apartment, but I hope to get internet in my apartment soon. It will be a lot easier to upload pictures then and write entries when I´m actually thinking about something. More to come . . . ... read more

The University I´m studying at, Universidad Torcuato di Tella, specializes in social sciences and is modeled off U.S. liberal arts schools. It´s pretty expensive by Argentine standards (like a U.S. private school is) but with US dollars, it´s relatively cheap. The school is less than 20 years old and only has one PhD program, but lots of masters programs. Most are two years, part-time, but the Masters in Finance is only a year-long, which is why I chose it, since it allows me to leave here with a degree. Plus, I don´t know anything about finance and it´s econ-related. Many of the profressors got their degrees in the U.S., so the teaching style and expectations are similar to U.S. universities. My classes started on Monday. The masters programs meet at night because most of the students ... read more

Bueno ya paso tanto tiempo no se ni donde empezar. Oh wait, English, right. I am getting them mixed up more and more as the days roll by. Why, last night with Marcelo the three of us were jabbering away in English and Spanish so interchangeably that the waiter didn’t know where the heck we were from. Anyway, what I wanted to say was: So much time has passed by that I don’t even know where to start. School will start tomorrow, (Monday March 13th) and so today we just relaxed and went to a weekend fair and cultural museum. (Same one as last weekend). I suppose the easiest and most efficient way to do this is in sections. Here we go, COUNTRY CLUB Last weekend Lindsay and I paid 90 pesos each and arrived promptly ... read more

We´ve finally got out of Brazil safely and arrived in Bueno Aires (BA) in a luxurious business class coach. The seat allows u to recline to almost horizontal and they provide water and coffee at all times. Dinner is inclusive and is served in pretty classy restaurant, the kind with waiters dressed in shirt and vest. We had a 3 course meal with free flow of soft drinks, beer, wine and champagne! After dinner, the bus captain (or shld I say the bus steward) served sweets and liquor. We were joking that maybe breakfast will be served in the morning, and the next thing when we woke up, the bus captain came with trays of snacks and coffee. Cool huh? Oh yes, we must also thank the 2 kind souls from the States whom we met ... read more
