Don had not been feeling well for several days and after we decided that it was probably not because of all of the overindulging we had been doing in Buenos Aires, we found ourselves at an old student hospital outside the city center. It took surprisingly little time from the moment we stepped into the Urgencia (Emergency Room but also the first door we could find) to the time we were able to speak with a doctor. We were pleased not only to not have to wait very long but also to get out of the make-shift waiting room which was really just a stark, dimly-lit, concrete-block corridor with seating (some of which was not broken). The student doctor who met with us was very friendly and also spoke some English (we decided that our broken ... read more

I arrived at my new place around 11:30 today and I love it. Everyone seems friendly. There is Julia who greeted. I was suppose to share a room with Ed and Lee but was put with Barbara instead. Lee seemed a bit disappointed. I also met the German (I think) couple who are in the room on the street. The people are friendly but I am feeling quiet. Its funny knowing who I am...loud and full of life...perhaps a little too typically American and here I am just the opposite. I feel like I am playing a trick on them and will pull out all the stops when they are least expecting it. I will blow in, crushing open the doors and leaving them tossled and frantic. (I love the idea of leaving people frantic.) After ... read more

To all the really really cold people in Canada, What a hot and sunny day I'm having here! Hopefully these photos will cheer you up. So I've been by the zoo today, through the rose garden and another botanical garden. I'm heading to Uruguay tomorrow with a buddy. Buenos Aires is a great place to come visit. Very modern and easy to get around. Great prices. So how much snow did you guys get? Richard... read more

So we eventually reached Buenos Aires after another long bus journey 18 hours to be precise! So what can we tell you, lets start with the taxi ride back from the bus station - we had wondered why there are no theme parks in BA but once you've been in a cab here you understand that there really is no need for any more white knuckle rides! There is ridiculous amount of traffic and thus about 6 lanes to most main roads with one having a total of 14 lanes, yes 14, however this apparently is not sufficient for the agentinian who straddle the lanes to fit about 25 cabs door to door. Passengers, it is advisable to keep your hands inside the vehicle at all times if you want to keep them! So we got ... read more

The weather broke on Wednesday night and went from boiling hot to chucking it down and breezy (a bit like summer at home really) although, it has started to get brighter and warmer again today. I´m also still not so hot at the Spanish. Perhaps it was a bit ambitious or maybe I just expected to have learnt more by now. Still, it´s a good experience and I´m sure I´ll learn more while I travel through south America. I am contemplating doing an extra week (giving a grand total of four) but, I´m not sure if it is worth it. The crowd at school are a good bunch if, generally, much younger than me. We had a good night out on Friday but, by god did I pay for it when I eventually got up on ... read more

I laid down over an hour ago but here I am at 11.30 clothed, sitting by the window listening to what the pink sky of Buenos Aires has to offer. I dont know why Im not tired. Perhaps it is because of my new habit - cafe chico (a shot of espresso with a heap full of sugar) Or maybe because I have been staying up until 2am almost every night since I arrived.) I think its probably both of these things and of course I said goodbye to my mama tonight. The plane left at 11 and now the clock reads 23.52 hours. I am waiting for her to call and say they didnt get on the flight. All day I have been waiting for her to leave because I am so anxious to start ... read more

Friends and Family Here are some photos from the last 2 days. Yesterday I toured the city. Lots of great photos. Today I went to a Football game with Alejandro. There was lots of great cheering, great plays, and even a riot to make it more exciting. No worries though. Not too hot, maybe 25 C. Just right. Having a great time. Great carnival in the street this evening in the San Miguel district Richard Dad - I got your comment fine.... read more

Every day has been an adventure here in Argentina. At the moment I am watching what I think is the final day of carnaval unfold on the Brazilian channel here in Buenos Aires. The costumes are colorful and huge. Jeez, it mus be so heavy to dance in these things. A lot of the parade I have seen is very influenced by the African heritage of Brazil. There is a lot of yellow (the color of one of the main orishas, or gods. A lot of cowry shells and groups on floats behind chains and being whipped.) I wish in America we could be open about our sad history. Tonight Mom and I went to have diner and see a tengo show. For the most part the show was cheezey. Think Andean flutes playing Simon and ... read more

It's here....well just about.... 48 hours from now and we will be just touching down in Buenos Aires. I have a plethora of etickets and travel vouchers to organize before we go. After triple checking, everything is in place and confirmed.... I'm such a stickler for details... Packing is a nightmare; it will be scorching hot, freezing cold, wet, dry and everything in between. To make things more difficult, Aerolineas Argentinas has the strictest weight restrictions this side of Fat Fighters. I can see frequent visits to the local lavandería automática on the horizon. I can't say I'm looking forward to the flight. At 6'4'' I don't sit happily in economy; Business Class is much more civilized. Could be time for some creative manoeuvring...where's my walking stick and neck brace?? How often this 'Blog is updated ... read more
